In the wake of climate warming, the water level of lake qinghai has been continuously and rapidly declining during the past decades, causing the regional government and citizens to worry about its future as a water resource. To understand the lake evolution process, the hydro-chemical characteristics of lake qinghai were investigated in August of 2008. The results show that Na+ and Cl- are the dominant cations and anions in the lake water, respectively, and hydrochemistry type is Cl-- Na+ with an obvious characteristic of a saline lake. The Gibbs plot illuminates that evaporation/crystallization is responsible for the chemical composition of the lake water. The variation in hydro-chemical regime might be attributed to the reduced lake levels between 1960s and 2000s. The lake level significantly correlated with the precipitation and evaporation in the lake qinghai catchment. In addition, changes of the lake level in the future are simulated according to climate warming scenarios from the IPCC report. The simulated results suggest that the lake level could rise again in the following decades due to the increased precipitation under the climate warming conditions, which is already a trend in the lake level observation data.

lake qinghai is the largest saline inland lake in China, and plays an important role on semi-arid ecosystem in lake qinghai basin,however,the lake has shrunk significantly during the last *** study investigates water level and area changes of lake *** lake level and area decreased at the average rate of 5.28 cm/a and 4.38 km2/a,respectively, between 1959 and ***,the lake area and level have increased slightly since *** trend of warming climate in recent decades maybe the main reasons for the lake shrinkage, and human activities have little effect on it.

Identification of Greigite in the late Pleistocene sediments of lake qinghai

In this study,the magnetic mineralogy of a late Pleistocene lake sediment core（1F,ca.18.6 m long） from the southern sub-basin deposition center of lake qinghai,the largest lake in China,was studied using multiple rockmagnetic and non-magnetic *** are two distinct magnetic susceptibility peaks at the depths of8.15;.96 m and 15.50;7.28 *** and low temperature magnetization investigations,coupled with scanning electron microscopy（SEM） and Energy dispersive x-ray（EDX） analyses,suggest that the sediments from these two intervals contain a large number of single domain（SD） and superparamagnetic（SP） greigite particles,which is the primary cause for the enhancement of magnetic *** greigite particles are mainly formed due to sulfate *** occurrence of greigite in the late Pleistocene sediments of 1F core implies that the lake qinghai could have experienced two intervals favorable for early diagenesis during the late Pleistocene.

Distribution of recent ostracod species in the lake qinghai area in northwestern China and its ecological significance

The occurrence and abundance of different ostracod species are sensitive to changes in environmental factors,especially to the temperature and the salinity7 of water ***,the ostracods can be used as a scale rough measure of temperature and salinity in the analysis and reconstruction of *** order to interpret the climate-change data using the ecological characteristics of the ostracods from the drill cores in lake qinghai,the distribution of Recent ostracods was studied in lake qinghai area.A total of 34 species belonging to the Ostracoda class of Crustacea were collected from different bodies of water in the lake qinghai area,and the ecological information for Recent ostracod species was *** these 34 species,Cypris pubera,Eucypris dulcifons,Ilyocypris sp.1,Ilyocypris sp.2,Fabaeformiscandona caudata,Fabaejormiscandona byalina,Plerpetocypris reptans,Prionocypris gansenensis,Potamocypris villosa,Potamocypris smaragdina,Paralimnocythere compressa and Subulacypris *** first reported by us in the lake qinghai *** of the species identified exhibited cosmopolitan distributions,at least in the Holarctic region,but *** and Ilyocypris ecbinata appeared to be restricted to the cold regions in northwestern *** ecological significance of the primary ostracod species in the lake qinghai area was described according to the observations made during our time in the field and according to data from a number of *** results indicate that the species diversity and abundance of ostracods may be related to water salinity in the lake qinghai *** ecological information for ostracods can be used to distinguish different water environments and types based on the characteristics of one species or of an assemblage of several species.

Lipid biomarkers and carbon isotopes of n-alkanes,n-fatty acids,and n-alkan-2-ones were used to determine organic carbon sources to surface sediments in lakes Erhai and Gahai on the Tibetan *** sediment samples contained n-fatty acids with lower concentrations of n-alkanes and *** chain nalkanes in lake sediments were characteristic of a source mixture of epicuticular waxes of higher plants and submerged littoral zone plants while n-fatty acids sources were bacteria and floating and/or submergent macrophytes;the n-alkan-2-ones had a possible source in epicuticular waxes of higher plants and/or grass from catchment which entered the lake and were reworked by the *** samples examined from lake Erhai had heavierδC values of bulk organic carbon and specific carbon compounds than samples from lake Cahai and meadow *** heavier isotopic composition can be best interpreted by the enhanced productivity occurring in lake Erhai due to its lower salinity and possibly to limited CO concentrations;for the latter,this may have enriched C in the dissolved inorganic carbon pool of the lake water.
