CaCO_3 film synthesis from ladle furnace slag: morphological change, new material properties, and Ca extraction efficiency

A rapidly air-cooled ladle furnace slag(RA-LFS), which is a type of steelmaking slag discharged from a steel mill, was used to synthesize CaCO_3 film. The CaCO_3 film with 35 cm^2 of surface area was synthesized under atmospheric conditions, and the surface morphology of the CaCO_3 films was changed by using additives(CaCl_2 and ethylene glycol). Especially, the addition of CaCl_2 changed the surface morphology of CaCO_3 film with pore and induced new material properties, such as water adsorption. The(012) face of CaCO_3 film(calcite) was rapidly decreased by the addition of CaCl_2. The major components of RA-LFS were calcium(type of CaO, 53.9 wt%) and aluminum(type of Al_2 O_3, 37.9 wt%), and the major crystal phases of RA-LFS were C_3 S, C_(12) A_7, and C_3 A. The calcium extraction efficiency of RA-LFS was significantly increased after the CaCO_3 film synthesis. The material properties(hardness and elastic modulus) and the thermal characteristics of the CaCO_3 films were analyzed by nano-indentation and thermogravimetry–differential thermal analysis. The synthesized CaCO_3 films from RA-LFS and Ca(OH)_2(reagent) showed similarities in terms of their material properties and the decomposition temperature.

A debate has arisen over the possibility of using a new ladle-treated Hadfield steel instead of conventional heat-treated Hadfield steel in mining applications. This debate might be solved by identifying the differences between the mechanical properties and strain-hardening properties of conventional heat-treated Hadfield steel and its counterpart ladle-treated Hadfield steel. Tensile and compression tests demonstrated that the ductility of ladle-treated Hadfield steel is similar to that of conventional heat-treated steel. However, the strain-hardening property of the ladle-treated Hadfield steel is almost two times higher than that of the heat-treated Hadfield steel. The results of this study demonstrate that the improvement of the strain-hardening behavior is attributable to the low stacking-fault energy of the main austenite matrix, which results from the high segregation coefficient of carbon and manganese solutes of the main austenite matrix into the new eutectic phase. Superior wear abrasion resistance is a potential consequence of different strain-hardening properties under low and high loads.

During ladle stirring,a gas is injected into the steel bath to generate a mixing of the liquid steel.The optimal process control requires a reliable measurement of the stirring intensity,for which the induced ladle wall vibrations have proved to be a potential indicator.An experimental cold water ladle with two eccentric nozzles and eight mono-axial accelerometers was thus investigated to measure the vibrations.The effect of the sensors'positions with respect to the gas plugs on the vibration intensity was analyzed,and experimental data on several points of the ladle were collected for future numerical simulations.It is shown that the vibration root-mean-square values depend not only on process parameters,such as gas flow rate,water,and oil heights,but also on the radial and axial positions of the sensors.The vibration intensity is clearly higher,close to the gas plumes,than in the opposite side.If one of the nozzles is clogged,the vibration intensity close to the clogged nozzle drops drastically(-36 to-59%),while the vibrations close to the normal operating nozzle are hardly affected.Based on these results,guidelines are provided for an optimized vibration-based stirring.

ladle slag carry-over detection technology (SCDT) is of important practical significance to steel continuous casting production (CCP),which can effectively improve the casting blank quality,increase molten steel yield ratio,and protract the service life of tundish.The current SCDT realization methods and their application circumstance were summarized,and their main problems during the course of factual production were pointed out.The difficult technical points of detection principle,digital signal processing for vibration style SCDT development were described.To aim at the problems of vibration style SCDT,such as low recognition stability and long applied adjustment time,its key technologies including water model experimental platform establishment,two-phase sink vortex entrapment mechanism,forced vibration response of shroud nozzle and steel stream shock vibration signal processing optimization were analyzed deeply,and the corresponding research route and advices were given.

Steel Temperature Compensating Model With Multi-Factor Coupling Based on ladle Thermal State

Combined with the parameters of the production process of a steel factory, numerical simulations for a new ladle from preheating to turnover are conducted using the finite element analysis system software （ANSYS）. The measured data proved that the simulated results are reliable. The effects of preheating time, thermal cycling times, and empty package time on steel temperature are calculated, an ideal preheating time is provided, besides, based on the analysis of a single factor and use the nonlinear analysis method, a steel temperature compensating model with di- versified coupling factors is proposed, with the largest error of the present coupling model at 1. 462 ~C, and the er- rors between actual and target steel temperature in tundish after the model is applied to practical production are basi- cally controlled within -4-6 ~C, which can meet the accuracy of the manufacturer and has a practical guiding significance for the production in steelmaking workshops.

The heat transfer in a steelmaking ladle was studied. The evaluation of heat transfer of the steel was performed by measuring steel temperature in points including all refining steel process. In the ladle, the temperatures in the refractories and the shell were also measured. To evaluate the thermal profile between the hot and cold faces of the ladle in the slag line position, an experiment which shows the importance of thermal contact resistance was carried out. Higher heat losses in the tapping and the vacuum were verified. The temperature measurements of the ladle indicate distinct thermal profiles in each stage of steel refining. Moreover, as each stage of the process depends on the previous one, the complexity of the ladle thermal control is incremental. So a complete model of heat losses in the ladle is complex.

Minimizing of heat loss of liquid steel through the ladle lining led to the integration of increasing insulation function of the permanent lining and high-quality insulating layer between the permanent lining and the ladle steel shell.In this paper,a study was made on physical and thermomechanical properties and corrosion resistance of calcium hexaluminate based castables.The chemical and physical properties of CA6 based castables fabricated in this work can fulfill general requirements of the permanent lining in ladle.The permanent linings of CA6 based castables offer superb thermal insulation and corrosion resistance,compared to conventional refractory systems of 300t ladle in Baosteel.Both functions of insulation and safety work effectively in whole process of ladle operation.

Purging plug with slits is widely used in the secondary refining process,and its service life determines the downtime and production efficiency.To achieve a good performance in service life,optimizing the geometric structure of the slit,which can alleviate the stress concentration around the slit,was employed using the finite plate model.Furthermore,the performance of the purging plugs with different shapes of slits in the refining effect was investigated by conducting the water model experiments.The numerical simulation results showed that the appropriate shapes of slits could alleviate the stress concentration phenomena.In the water model experiment,the mixing time of the purging plug with circular slits is lesser than that of the purging plug with rectangular slits when the gas flow is less than 6.02 L/min.Compared with the rectangular slits,the circular slits are detrimental to smaller and well-distributed bubbles.Thus,the inclusion removal rate of the purging plug with circular slits is approximately 10%larger than that of the purging plug with the rectangular slits.

A model of the heat transfer between molten steel and the ladle lining was established for the strip casting process,which involves a series of different operations. These operations include preheating,ladle tapping,ladle waiting,blowing of argon gas,and ladle pouring. To simulate the process of pouring molten steel,the geometric deformation( moving grid) technique was used in the model. Moreover,the model considers the heat absorption effect of argon gas and the formation of open eyes during argon blowing. Note that the model was used to compare the effect of different parameter values,including different preheating temperatures,tapping temperature,and argon blowing rates. The results indicate that the argon blowing rate has considerable influence on the decrease in the temperature of molten steel.
