SOLUTION PROPERTIES OF ladder-LIKE polymer POLYPHENYLSILSESQUIOXANES

Solution properties of ladder-like polymer polyphenylsilsesquioxane （PPS） were studied by measurement of intrinsic viscosity, small angle laser light scattering and gel permeation chromatography. It was found that PPS can be modeled with a wormlike continuous cylinder rather than a wormlike coil. A plot of （M2/[η]）1/3 vs. M1/2 was employed in obtaining the persistence length （2λ）-1 and effective hydrodynamic diameter. When MW≤5×105, Mark-Houwink equation is adequate in describing the relationship between MW and [η] with αabout unity. This implies that PPS chain is semi-stiff. For GPC experiments, it was shown that universal calibration can be applied in PPS. When molecular weights of PPS are sufficiently high, their molecular weight distributions are often very broad.

A ladder conjugated polymer transducer for solid-contact Cu^(2+)-selective electrodes

In recent years, there has been a pronounced interest in solid-contact ion-selective electrodes （SC-ISEs）, with emphasis on the use of conducting polymers as ion-to-electron transducer. In this work, a ladder conjugated polymer, thieno[3,2-b]thiophene （LCPT）, was investigated in fabricating Cu2＋-selective electrodes for the first time. The resulting electrodes were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS）, chronopotentiometry, and the water layer test. Results proved that the active LCPT facilitates the ion-to-electron transduction, and avoids the detrimental aqueous layer formed at the interface of SC-ISEs.

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF AN ORDERED ladder POLYESTER

An ordered ladder polyester （LPE） was first synthesized through the ladder superstructure （LS） constructed by concerted interactions of hydroxyl- and aramide-based H-bonding and p-terphenyl （TP）-based π-stacking by dehydrochlorination condensation using phosgene （COCl2） as coupling agent. LPE was characterized by GPC, FTIR, NMR, XRD, DSC and AFM. Among them, a distinct image of regularly linear alignment corresponding to the ladder main chain of LPE was first revealed by high-resolution AFM.
