Lacustrine record of 800 yr hydrological variations on the central Tibetan Plateau

Zige Tangco is a meromictic saline lake located on the central Tibetan Plateau.Two parallel cores(ZGTC A-1 and ZGTC A-2)were collected from the lake at a water depth of 25 m during summer 2006.The chronology of core A-1 was reconstructed based on the Constant Initial Concentration(CIC)model of 210Pb and three accelerator mass spectrometry(AMS)ages from the chitin fragments.The hard water effect calibration of the sediment ^(14)C age showed that the reservoir effect ranged from 1655 yr at 1950 AD to 1540 yr at 1610 AD.The hydrological variation in Zige Tangco during the past 800 yr was reconstructed using multi-proxies,including organic and carbonate content,stable isotopes of fine-grained carbonate minerals(lia)in Zige Tangco correspond to the lower δ^(18)O values in the Guliya ice core and the lower precipitation reconstructed from tree rings in Delingha.This demonstrated that the summer monsoon on the central Tibetan Plateau weakened during the dry and cold periods,whereas the winter monsoon strengthened.Relatively wetter periods or higher lake levels in Zige Tangco occurred at 1580-1650 AD and 1820-1900 AD.Negative shifts in stable isotopes were related to increased lake levels between 1800 and 1820 AD.Our results also showed that the summer monsoon precipitation on the central Tibetan Plateau was mainly controlled by solar activity during the past 800 yr.

Glacier variations and rising temperature in the Mt.Kenya since the Last Glacial Maximum

High-resolution imagery can be used to reconstruct former glacier boundaries through the identification of glacial erosional and sedimentary geomorphology. We employed moraine mapping and the accumulation–area ratio method(AAR), in conjunction with Landsat, Google Earth, and SRTM imagery, to reconstruct glacier boundaries and equilibrium-line altitudes(ELAs) for Mt. Kenya in the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM), the Little Ice Age(lia), and at present. Our results show that the areas of Lewis Glacier and the Tyndall-I glacier system were 0.678 km^2 and 0.390 km^2, respectively, during the maximum of lia. Those mean that the both glaciers have shrunken by 87.0% and 88.7%, respectively since the lia. Area change ratios for each glacier were significantly larger in the period of 2000 through 2015 than the former periods, indicating that glacier recession has accelerated. Continuous ice loss in this region has been driven by rising temperature and fluctuating precipitation. Linear regression data for Lewis glacier show that mass balance sensitivity to dry season temperature was –315 mm w.e./℃, whereas the sensitivity to dry season precipitation was 5.2 mm w.e./mm. Our data also show that the ELA on the western slope of Mt. Kenya rose by 716-816 m from the LGM to the modern era, corresponding to that temperature rose by 5.2℃-6.5℃.

Debating about the climate warming is reviewed. Discussions have focused on the validity of the temperature reconstruction for the last millennium made by Mann et al. Arguments against and for the reconstruction are introduced. Temperature reconstructions by other authors are examined, including the one carried out by Wang et al. in 1996. It is concluded that: (1) Ability of reproducing temperature variability of time scale less than 10 a is limited, so no sufficient evidence proves that the 1990s was the warmest decade, and 1998 was the warmest year over the last millennium. (2) All of the temperature reconstructions by different authors demonstrate the occurrence of the MWP (Medieval Warm Period) and lia (Little Ice Age) in low frequency band of temperature variations, though the peak in the MWP and trough in lia varies from one reconstruction to the others. Therefore, terms of MWP and lia can be used in studies of climate change. (3) The warming from 1975 to 2000 was significant, but we do not know if it was the strongest for the last millennium, which needs to be proved by more evidence.

Acceleration modules in linear induction accelerators

The Linear Induction Accelerator （lia） is a unique type of accelerator that is capable of accelerating kilo-Ampere charged particle current to tens of MeV energy. The present development of lia in MHz bursting mode and the successful application into a synchrotron have broadened lia＇s usage scope. Although the transformer model is widely used to explain the acceleration mechanism of lias, it is not appropriate to consider the induction electric field as the field which accelerates charged particles for many modern lias. We have examined the transition of the magnetic cores＇ functions during the lia acceleration modules＇ evolution, distinguished transformer type and transmission line type lia acceleration modules, and re-considered several related issues based on transmission line type lia acceleration module. This clarified understanding should help in the further development and design of lia acceleration modules.

COLD WINTER EVENTS RECORDED IN HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS OF THE TROPICAL AREA, CHINA

Historical documents to record cold winter events of the tropical area, such as snowfall, freeze and frost, are convincible evidence of the Little Ice Age (lia). Cold winter events recorded in historical documents such as local chronicles of areas (tropical areas) to the south of the Tropical of Cancer, China provide such evidence. The statistic data of the past several centuries, such as the year number of cold winter per decade, the index of cold winter and the number of county with cold winter records per decade suggest that the colder winter in the tropical areas of China was concentrated in four periods: 1380-1430 A D, 1480-1550 A D, 1620-1770 A D and 1830-1900 A D. The lia influenced the climate of the tropical areas of China. However, temperature of the lia was not lower always, but there was a series of alternative warm and cold times.

Analysis of South Hemisphere Temperature Anomalies over the Last Millennium up to the Beginning of the Contemporary Age: A Comparison between a Statistical Model and a Global Dynamic Model

We analyze the consistency of the coupled atmosphere-ocean GISS-ER climate model in reproducing South American temperature anomalies over the last millennium. For that purpose, we compare the model results with the Neukom’s temperature anomaly reconstruction provided by a statistical model that uses multiproxy data and climatological temperature anomalies. Specifically, we examine temperature anomalies for summer and winter of a 6-member ensemble of the GISS-ER model with 1× solar forcing and 2× solar forcing, calculated for the period 1000-1899. Using the Neukom’s reconstructions and the model outputs, we calculate the summer mean anomalies of the period 1001-1700 (a period that includes Medieval Climate Anomaly -MCA- and Little Ice Age -lia-), and winter mean anomalies of the period 1706-1800 (a period that includes the pre-industrial period). These mean anomalies are subtracted from Neukom’s reconstructions defining the reconstructions wrt 1001-1700 (summer) and wrt 1706-1800 (summer and winter). In general, the model is not very consistent with the reconstructions, since the model’s mean and spread show very small interannual variability in contrast to what the reconstructions exhibit, and often with anomalies of opposite sign. In the period 1001-1700, the model presents, on average, negative temperature anomalies for the 1× and 2× forcing. In the period 1706-1800, the model displays positive anomalies for summer and negative anomalies for winter for the 1× and 2× forcing. In particular, the anomaly that better reproduces the sign of the reconstructions is that wrt 1001-1700 with 1× forcing and for summer. The model has an error of only 33% in reproducing the sign of the anomalies, in comparison to the Neukom’s reconstruction for the same reference period. The model’s anomaly wrt 1001-1700 with 1× forcing for summer also reproduces the MCA and lia’s sign of the reconstruction.
