Three-Layer joint modeling of Chinese Trigger Extraction withConstraints on Trigger and Argument Semantics

As a subtask of information extraction (IE), which aims to extract structured information from texts, event extraction is to recognize event trigger mentions of a predefined event type and their arguments. In general, event extraction can be divided into two subtasks: trigger extraction and argument extraction. Currently, the frequent existences of unannotated trigger mentions and poor-context trigger mentions impose critical challenges in Chinese trigger extraction. This paper proposes a novel three-layer joint model to integrate three components in trigger extraction, i.e., trigger identification, event type determination, and event subtype determination. In this way, different kinds of evidence on distinct pseudo samples can be well captured to eliminate the harmful effects of those un-annotated trigger mentions. In addition, this paper introduces various types of linguistically driven constraints on the trigger and argument semantics into the joint model to recover those poor-context trigger mentions. The experimental results show that our joint model significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art Chinese trigger extraction and Chinese event extraction as a whole.

Analysis of Panel Count Data with Time-dependent Covariates and Informative Observation Process

Panel count data occur in many clinical and observational studies and in some situations the observation process is informative. In this article, we propose a new joint model for the analysis of panel count data with time-dependent covariates and possibly in the presence of informative observation process via two latent variables. For the inference on the proposed model, a class of estimating equations is developed and the resulting estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. In addition, a lack-of-fit test is provided for assessing the adequacy of the model. The finite-sample behavior of the proposed methods is examined through Monte Carlo simulation studies which suggest that the proposed approach works well for practical situations. Also an illustrative example is provided.

Analyzing Longitudinal Data with Informative Observation and Terminal Event Times

Longitudinal data often arise when subjects are followed over a period of time, and in many situations, there may exist informative observation times and a dependent terminal event such as death that stops the follow-up. In this article, we propose joint modeling and analysis of longitudinal data with possibly informative observation times and a dependent terminal event in which a common subject-specific latent variable is used to characterize the correlations. A borrow-strength estimation procedure is developed for parameter estimation, and both large-sample and finite^sample properties of the proposed estimators are established. In addition, some goodness-of-fit methods for assessing the adequacy of the model are provided. An application to a bladder cancer study is illustrated.

Semiparametric Analysis of Longitudinal Data with Informative Observation Times

In many longitudinal studies, observation times as well as censoring times may be correlated with longitudinal responses. This paper considers a multiplicative random effects model for the longitudinal response where these correlations may exist and a joint modeling approach is proposed via a shared latent variable. For inference about regression parameters, estimating equation approaches are developed and asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are established. The finite sample behavior of the methods is examined through simulation studies and an application to a data set from a bladder cancer study is provided for illustration.

A joint Model of Device Load and User Intention in Load Monitoring

In this paper, a concept for the joint modeling of the device load and user intention is presented. It consists of two coupled models, a device load model to characterize the power consumption of an electric device of interest, and a user intention model for describing the user intentions which cause the energy consumption. The advantage of this joint model is the ability to predict the device load from the user intention and to reconstruct the user intention from the measured device load. This opens a new way for load monitoring, simulation and prediction from the perspective of users instead of devices.
