The southward expansion of East Asian farmers profoundly influenced the social evolution of Southeast Asia by introducing cereal agriculture.However,the timing and routes of cereal expansion in key regions are unclear due to limited empirical evidence.Here we report macrofossil,microfossil,multiple isotopic(C/N/Sr/O)and paleoproteomic data directly from radiocarbon-dated human samples,which were unearthed from a site in Xingyi in central Yunnan and which date between 7000 and 3300 a BP.Dietary isotopes reveal the earliest arrival of millet ca.4900 a BP,and greater reliance on plant and animal agriculture was indicated between 3800 and 3300 a BP.The dietary differences between hunter-gatherer and agricultural groups are also evident in the metabolic and immune system proteins analysed from their skeletal remains.The results of paleoproteomic analysis indicate that humans had divergent biological adaptations,with and without farming.The combined application of isotopes,archaeobotanical data and proteomics provides a new approach to documenting dietary and health changes across major subsistence transitions.

An Automated,Highly Selective Reaction Monitoring Instrument Using Molecular Rotational Resonance Spectroscopy

Online monitoring of chemical reactions by using analytical chemistry tools is a powerful way to maximize control over these processes.In this paper,we demonstrate the use of molecular rotational resonance,an emerging and extraordinarily selective spectroscopic technique,to perform automated reaction monitoring measurements.An interface using a six-port valve with a calibrated sample loop,coupled to a temperature controlled inlet for analyte volatilization,was developed and tested.Two reactions were chosen for initial characterization:an amine-aldehyde condensation reaction to form an imine product and an isotopic exchange reaction of aβ-ketoester with keto-enol tautomerization.The spectrometer was able to provide kinetic information about the reaction and determine reaction completion.In the future,this system can be extended to detect and quantify impurities and characterize reaction selectivity,in addition to the reaction progress.

Seniority and (9/2)^(n) configurations in neutron-rich Nickel isotopes

Excited states in low-energy spectra of ^(70-76) Ni are considered. Accordingly, pairing forces in the form of surface delta interaction are employed to account for the formation of the ground state multiplet with seniority v= 2 states. The multiplet splitting is described with mass relationships of masses of neighboring nuclei. Subsequently, the seniority model is adopted to reproduce or predict the states v= 3 in odd-even isotopes and v= 4 in even-even isotopes. The correct account of the 2^(+)_(1) state should allow for the description of the reversed order of J = 4 states with v= 2 and v= 4 observed in experiments. The results obtained are compared with the structure of similar multiplets in N=50 isotones.

Source of Ore-Forming Fluid and Material in the Baiyun Gold Deposit, Liaoning Province, NE China: Constraints from H-O-S-Pb isotopes and in-situ Analyses of Au-Bearing Pyrites

The Baiyun deposit is a large gold deposit at the western end of the Liaoji rift zone in Liaoning Province, which has produced both auriferous quartz-vein type and altered-rock type mineralization. The ore bodies are mainly hosted in schist from the Gaixian Formation of the Liaohe Group. A detailed field geological survey showed that the quartz-vein type gold ore bodies are distributed in the near EW-trending and occur in the extensional tectonic space of schist in the Gaixian Formation, and the altered-rock type gold ore bodies are distributed in the near EW-trending structural belt and occur near in the Gaixian Formation of biotite schist, biotite granulite, marble and the upper footwall of dike. To further elucidate the source of ore-forming fluid and material in the Baiyun gold deposit, the H-O isotopes for quartz, S and Pb isotopes, in-situ trace elements for sulfides from quartz-vein and altered-rock type mineralization were studied. The H-O isotopic δD_(V-SMOW) and δ^(18)O_(H2O) values of the auriferous quartz range were from-88.8‰ to-82.2‰ and-1.95‰ to 4.85‰, respectively, suggests that the ore-forming fluids were mainly magmatic water with minor meteoric water. The distribution ranges of in-situ S isotopic compositions of Au-bearing pyrite in the quartz-vein type and altered-rock type ores were-8.38‰–-10.47‰(with average values of-7.89‰) and 11.38‰– 17.52‰(with average values of 11.55‰), respectively, indicating that the S isotopic compositions of the two ore types were clearly different. The in-situ Pb isotopic ratios changed almost uniformly, which showed that they had the same lead isotopic source. Based on the analysis of S and Pb isotopic compositions, the metallogenic materials in the Baiyun gold deposit were primarily from deep magma, and some wall rock materials may have been mixed in the metallogenic process. Co/Ni diagram shows that most Au-bearing pyrites have magmatic-hydrothermal or sedimentary alteration properties, and Au/As ratios were between 0.001 and 0.828(the average value was 0.07),

Crustal Contaminations Responsible for the Petrogenesis of Basalts from the Emeishan Large Igneous Province,NW China:New Evidence from Ba isotopes

Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP),one of the largest continental volcanic provinces worldwide (e.g.,Karoo),is extensively distributed along the western margin of the Yangtze Block.Even though the consensus that the ELIP is of a plume-related origin has been reached for decades,the role of crustal contamination in the petrogenesis of these basalts is still debatable so far.This paper firstly reports the Ba isotopic compositions of the continental flood basalts from the Lijiang,Miyi and Emeishan regions to discuss the genesis of basalts from the ELIP.According to their TiO_(2) contents and Ti/Y ratios,these basalts are divided into two groups,the low-Ti basalts from Lijiang and the high-Ti basalts from Miyi and Emeishan.The Ba isotopic compositions show that the low-Ti basalts have the δ^(138/134)Ba values from-0.33‰to+0.23‰with an average of-0.02‰±0.40‰,and the high-Ti basalts from -0.38‰to+0.38‰with an average of 0.038‰±0.36‰,all of which show a wider range of Ba isotopes relative to that of the primitive mantle (PM).This is unlikely to be explained by partial melting,fractional crystallization or even chemical weathering owing to little Ba isotopic fractionation during these processes.In contrast,variable extents of crustal contamination into the basaltic magmas more likely resulted in such isotopic diversity.The ratios of incompatible elements (e.g.,Nb/U,La/Nb,and Nb/Y) further suggest that the low-Ti basalts experienced higher degrees of crustal contaminations than those high-Ti basalts,which is well consistent with their spatial distributions.In general,the basaltic magmas in the ELIP were probably contaminated by different degrees of crustal materials during their upwelling to the surface.

Nature and evolution of the lithospheric mantle revealed by water contents and He-Ar isotopes of peridotite xenoliths from Changbaishan and Longgang basalts in Northeast China

The nature and evolution of the lithospheric mantle underlying Northeast(NE)China were investigated by assessing the mineral chemistry,water contents,and noble gas(He-Ar)isotopes of peridotite xenoliths captured by Cenozoic basalts from the Changbaishan and Longgang regions.The xenoliths,which have863–1141℃ equilibration temperatures,primarily comprise spinel lherzolites and rare spinel harzburgites.The Mg#(Fo)values of olivine in the peridotite xenoliths vary from 86.9 to 91.3.The clinopyroxenes have high Ti/Eu and low(La/Yb)N,and their chondrite-normalized rare earth elements(REEs)exhibit light REE-depletion to-enrichment patterns,indicating that the mantle underneath the investigated region was predominantly subjected to partial melting(1%–10%)and was metasomatized by silicate melts.The measured3He/4He ratios of the Changbaishan xenoliths have a narrow range from 5.8 Ra to 8.4 Ra with an average of 7.4 Ra.The3He/4He isotopic ratios of the Longgang xenoliths varied from 4.7 Ra to8.1 Ra with an average of 5.9 Ra;slightly lower than the Changbaishan xenoliths.The whole-rock H2Ocontents of the studied peridotite ranged from 9 to 132 ppm.The high H2O contents in excess of50 ppm(up to 132 ppm)might represent newly accreted and cooled asthenospheric materials,while those with H2O contents lower than 50 ppm(as little as 9 ppm)may represent thinned,relic,ancient lithospheric mantle.These geochemical evidences,in combination with published data,indicated that the lithospheric mantle beneath the Changbaishan and Longgang in NE China is dominated by the younger and more fertile lithospheric mantle with a minor ancient and refractory keel.In addition,the lithospheric mantle of this area was metasomatized by melts related to the recent subduction event(e.g.,Pacific oceanic plate).Therefore,the westward-dipping Pacific oceanic plate subduction had an important contribution to the transformation of the lithospheric mantle beneath NE China.

Differences in major ions as well as hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of sediment pore water and lake water

Isotopic and chemical compositions of pore water(PW) are highly relevant to environmental and forensic study. Five lake water(LW)samples and five sediment samples were collected to investigate the effects of pore sizes of sediments on PW chemistry and stable isotopes and determine mechanisms controlling their variations. Six pore water fractions were extracted from different-sized pores in each sediment sample at six sequential centrifugal speeds for chemical and isotopic analysis. The sediments consisted mainly of quartz, feldspar, and clay minerals. The hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions of PW are mainly controlled by the overlying LW, although the lag effect of exchange between overlying LW and PW results in isotopic differences when recharge of LW is quicker than isotopic exchange in PW. Identical isotopic compositions of PW from sediments with different pore sizes indicate that isotopic exchange of water molecules with different pore sizes is a quick process. The ratio of average total dissolved solid(TDS) concentration of PW to TDS concentration of LW shows a strong relationship with adsorption capacity of sediments, demonstrating that remobilization of ions bound to sediments mainly causes a chemical shift from LW to PW.Concentrations of Ca^(2+), Mg^(2+),and Cl^-in PW remain unchanged,while concentrations of Na^+,K^+,and SO_4^(2-) slightly increase with decreasing pore size. Chemical differences of PW from sediments with different pore sizes are governed by ion adsorption properties and surface characteristics of different-si zed particles.

Candidate chiral nuclei in bromine isotopes based on triaxial relativistic mean field theory

Following the observation of candidate chiral doublet bands in ^(78,80)Br, triaxial deformations with corresponding configurations in odd-odd bromine isotopes have been investigated using adiabatic and configuration-fixed constrained triaxial relativistic-meanfield calculations with an aim of finding the boundary of chirality in the chain of Br isotopes. Several minima with triaxial deformation and the proper particle-hole configuration were obtained in ^(74,76,78,80,82)Br, where the chiral doublet bands have the possibility of occurrence. Furthermore, the possible existence of multiple chiral doublet(MχD) bands is demonstrated in ^(74,76,78,80,82)Br.Experiments to explore the chirality and MχD properties of Br isotopes are conducted to verify the predictions.

Tracing the formation and differentiation of the Earth by non-traditional stable isotopes

The Earth has grown from chaotically mixed small dusts and gases to its present highly differentiated layered structure over the past 4.567 billion years. This differentiation has led to the formation of the atmosphere, hydrosphere,biosphere, crust, mantle, and core. The timing and mechanism for the formation and evolution of these different layers are still subjects of intense debate. This review brings together recent advances in using non-traditional stable isotopes to constrain major events and processes leading to the formation and differentiation of the Earth, including the Moon-forming giant impact, crustmantle interactions, evolution of life, the rise of atmospheric oxygen, extreme paleoclimate changes, and cooling rate of magmas.

Estimating submarine groundwater discharge and associated nutrient inputs into Daya Bay during spring using radium isotopes

Daya Bay, a semi-enclosed bay in the South China Sea, is well known for its aquaculture, agriculture, and tourism. In recent years, many environmental problems have emerged, such as the frequent(almost yearly) occurrence of harmful algal blooms and red tides. Therefore,investigations of submarine groundwater discharge(SGD) and associated nutrient inputs to this bay have important theoretical and practical significance to the protection of the ecological system. Such a study was conducted using short-lived radium isotopes ^(223)Ra and ^(224)Ra. The estimated SGD fluxes were 2.89 × 10~7 m^3/d and 3.05 × 10~7 m^3/d based on ^(223)Ra and ^(224)Ra, respectively. The average SGD flux was about 35 times greater than that of all the local rivers. The SGD-associated dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP)fluxes ranged from 1.95 × 10~6 to 2.06 × 10~6 mol/d and from 5.72 × 10~4 to 6.04 × 10~4 mol/d, respectively. The average ratio of DIN to DIP fluxes in SGD was 34, much higher than that in local rivers(about 6.46), and about twice as large as the Redfield ratio(16). Our results indicate that SGD is a significant source of nutrients to the bay and may cause frequent occurrence of harmful algal blooms. This study provides baseline data for evaluating potential environmental effects due to urbanization and economic growth in this region.
