7. Electric steel—making Electric arc furnaces of the type shown in Fig. 5.4 are now widely used for making high grade steels, especially alloy steels, from steel scrap. The main elements added to steel are Ni, Cr Mn, V, Mo, W, Nb, Ti, mostly as ferro—alloys. Many of them are more oxidizable than iron. It is thus impossible to make most alloy steels under the oxidizing conditions that exist in a Bessemer converter or an O. H. furnace. For example, vanadium abbed to an O.H. bath would be oxidized away, FeO+V→Fe+VO.

5. The Bessemer provess (cont’d) In the acid Bessemer process most of the heat required is supplied by the oxidation of silicon, the content of which should be at least 2 per cent. An acid pig iron is thus used. Fig. 11. 4 shows the sequence of removal of elements during the process. This can be understood from Fig. 11. 2.
