Situated at the intersection of technology and medicine,the internet of things(IoT)holds the promise of addressing some of healthcare's most pressing challenges,from medical error,to chronic drug shortages,to overburdened hospital systems,to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.However,despite considerable recent technological advances,the pace of successful implementation of promising IoT healthcare initiatives has been slow.To inspire more productive collaboration,we present here a simple—but surprisingly underrated—problemoriented approach to developing healthcare technologies.To further assist in this effort,we reviewed the various commercial,regulatory,social/cultural,and technological factors in the development of the IoT.We propose that fog computing—a technological paradigm wherein the burden of computing is shifted from a centralized cloud server closer to the data source—offers the greatest promise for building a robust and scalable healthcare IoT ecosystem.To this end,we explore the key enabling technologies that underpin the fog architecture,from the sensing layer all the way up to the cloud.It is our hope that ongoing advances in sensing,communications,cryptography,storage,machine learning,and artificial intelligence will be leveraged in meaningful ways to generate unprecedented medical intelligence and thus drive improvements in the health of many people.

Stochastic programming based multi-arm bandit offloading strategy for internet of things

In order to solve the high latency of traditional cloud computing and the processing capacity limitation of internet of things(IoT)users,Multi-access Edge Computing(MEC)migrates computing and storage capabilities from the remote data center to the edge of network,providing users with computation services quickly and directly.In this paper,we investigate the impact of the randomness caused by the movement of the IoT user on decision-making for offloading,where the connection between the IoT user and the MEC servers is uncertain.This uncertainty would be the main obstacle to assign the task accurately.Consequently,if the assigned task cannot match well with the real connection time,a migration(connection time is not enough to process)would be caused.In order to address the impact of this uncertainty,we formulate the offloading decision as an optimization problem considering the transmission,computation and migration.With the help of Stochastic Programming(SP),we use the posteriori recourse to compensate for inaccurate predictions.Meanwhile,in heterogeneous networks,considering multiple candidate MEC servers could be selected simultaneously due to overlapping,we also introduce the Multi-Arm Bandit(MAB)theory for MEC selection.The extensive simulations validate the improvement and effectiveness of the proposed SP-based Multi-arm bandit Method(SMM)for offloading in terms of reward,cost,energy consumption and delay.The results showthat SMMcan achieve about 20%improvement compared with the traditional offloading method that does not consider the randomness,and it also outperforms the existing SP/MAB based method for offloading.

Collaborative image compression and classification with multi-task learning for visual internet of things

Widespread deployment of the internet of things(Io T)has changed the way that network services are developed,deployed,and operated.Most onboard advanced Io T devices are equipped with visual sensors that form the so-called visual Io T.Typically,the sender would compress images,and then through the communication network,the receiver would decode images,and then analyze the images for applications.However,image compression and semantic inference are generally conducted separately,and thus,current compression algorithms cannot be transplanted for the use of semantic inference directly.A collaborative image compression and classification framework for visual Io T applications is proposed,which combines image compression with semantic inference by using multi-task learning.In particular,the multi-task Generative Adversarial Networks(GANs)are described,which include encoder,quantizer,generator,discriminator,and classifier to conduct simultaneously image compression and classification.The key to the proposed framework is the quantized latent representation used for compression and classification.GANs with perceptual quality can achieve low bitrate compression and reduce the amount of data transmitted.In addition,the design in which two tasks share the same feature can greatly reduce computing resources,which is especially applicable for environments with extremely limited resources.Using extensive experiments,the collaborative compression and classification framework is effective and useful for visual IoT applications.

The internet of things (IoT) is a large-scale network of devices capable of sensing, data processing, and communicating with each other through different communication protocols. In today's technology ecosystem, IoT interacts with many application areas such as smart city, smart building, security, traffic, remote monitoring, health, energy, disaster, agriculture, industry. The IoT network in these scenarios comprises tiny devices, gateways, and cloud platforms. An IoT network is able to keep these fundamental components in transmission under many conditions with lightweight communication protocols taking into account the limited hardware features (memory, processor, energy, etc.) of tiny devices. These lightweight communication protocols affect the network traffic, reliability, bandwidth, and energy consumption of the IoT application. Therefore, determining the most proper communication protocol for application developers emerges as an important engineering problem. This paper presents a straightforward overview of the lightweight communication protocols, technological advancements in application layer for the IoT ecosystem. The survey then analyzes various recent lightweight communication protocols and reviews their strengths and limitations. In addition, the paper explains the experimental comparison of Constrained Applications Protocol (CoAP), Message Queuing Telemetry (MQTT), and WebSocket protocols, more convenient for tiny IoT devices. Finally, we discuss future research directions of communication protocols for IoT.

An ensemble deep learning model for cyber threat hunting in industrial internet of things

By the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution,interconnected devices and sensors generate large-scale,dynamic,and inharmonious data in Industrial internet of things(IIoT)platforms.Such vast heterogeneous data increase the challenges of security risks and data analysis procedures.As IIoT grows,cyber-attacks become more diverse and complex,making existing anomaly detection models less effective to operate.In this paper,an ensemble deep learning model that uses the benefits of the Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM)and the AutoEncoder(AE)architecture to identify out-of-norm activities for cyber threat hunting in IIoT is proposed.In this model,the LSTM is applied to create a model on normal time series of data(past and present data)to learn normal data patterns and the important features of data are identified by AE to reduce data dimension.In addition,the imbalanced nature of IIoT datasets has not been considered in most of the previous literature,affecting low accuracy and performance.To solve this problem,the proposed model extracts new balanced data from the imbalanced datasets,and these new balanced data are fed into the deep LSTM AE anomaly detection model.In this paper,the proposed model is evaluated on two real IIoT datasets-Gas Pipeline(GP)and Secure Water Treatment(SWaT)that are imbalanced and consist of long-term and short-term dependency on data.The results are compared with conventional machine learning classifiers,Random Forest(RF),Multi-Layer Perceptron(MLP),Decision Tree(DT),and Super Vector Machines(SVM),in which higher performance in terms of accuracy is obtained,99.3%and 99.7%based on GP and SWaT datasets,respectively.Moreover,the proposed ensemble model is compared with advanced related models,including Stacked Auto-Encoders(SAE),Naive Bayes(NB),Projective Adaptive Resonance Theory(PART),Convolutional Auto-Encoder(C-AE),and Package Signatures(PS)based LSTM(PS-LSTM)model.

internet of things(IoT)is a popular social network in which devices are virtually connected for communicating and sharing information.This is applied greatly in business enterprises and government sectors for delivering the services to their customers,clients and citizens.But,the interaction is success-ful only based on the trust that each device has on another.Thus trust is very much essential for a social network.As internet of things have access over sen-sitive information,it urges to many threats that lead data management to risk.This issue is addressed by trust management that help to take decision about trust-worthiness of requestor and provider before communication and sharing.Several trust-based systems are existing for different domain using Dynamic weight meth-od,Fuzzy classiﬁcation,Bayes inference and very few Regression analysis for IoT.The proposed algorithm is based on Logistic Regression,which provide strong statistical background to trust prediction.To make our stand strong on regression support to trust,we have compared the performance with equivalent sound Bayes analysis using Beta distribution.The performance is studied in simu-lated IoT setup with Quality of Service(QoS)and Social parameters for the nodes.The proposed model performs better in terms of various metrics.An IoT connects heterogeneous devices such as tags and sensor devices for sharing of information and avail different application services.The most salient features of IoT system is to design it with scalability,extendibility,compatibility and resiliency against attack.The existing worksﬁnds a way to integrate direct and indirect trust to con-verge quickly and estimate the bias due to attacks in addition to the above features.

Flooding is a hazardous natural calamity that causes significant damage to lives and infrastructure in the real world.Therefore,timely and accurate decision-making is essential for mitigating flood-related damages.The traditional flood prediction techniques often encounter challenges in accuracy,timeliness,complexity in handling dynamic flood patterns and leading to substandard flood management strategies.To address these challenges,there is a need for advanced machine learning models that can effectively analyze internet of things(IoT)-generated flood data and provide timely and accurate flood predictions.This paper proposes a novel approach-the Adaptive Momentum and Backpropagation(AM-BP)algorithm-for flood prediction and management in IoT networks.The AM-BP model combines the advantages of an adaptive momentum technique with the backpropagation algorithm to enhance flood prediction accuracy and efficiency.Real-world flood data is used for validation,demonstrating the superior performance of the AM-BP algorithm compared to traditional methods.In addition,multilayer high-end computing architecture(MLCA)is used to handle weather data such as rainfall,river water level,soil moisture,etc.The AM-BP’s real-time abilities enable proactive flood management,facilitating timely responses and effective disaster mitigation.Furthermore,the AM-BP algorithm can analyze large and complex datasets,integrating environmental and climatic factors for more accurate flood prediction.The evaluation result shows that the AM-BP algorithm outperforms traditional approaches with an accuracy rate of 96%,96.4%F1-Measure,97%Precision,and 95.9%Recall.The proposed AM-BP model presents a promising solution for flood prediction and management in IoT networks,contributing to more resilient and efficient flood control strategies,and ensuring the safety and well-being of communities at risk of flooding.

IoT devices rely on authentication mechanisms to render secure message exchange.During data transmission,scalability,data integrity,and processing time have been considered challenging aspects for a system constituted by IoT devices.The application of physical unclonable functions(PUFs)ensures secure data transmission among the internet of things(IoT)devices in a simplified network with an efficient time-stamped agreement.This paper proposes a secure,lightweight,cost-efficient reinforcement machine learning framework(SLCR-MLF)to achieve decentralization and security,thus enabling scalability,data integrity,and optimized processing time in IoT devices.PUF has been integrated into SLCR-MLF to improve the security of the cluster head node in the IoT platform during transmission by providing the authentication service for device-to-device communication.An IoT network gathers information of interest from multiple cluster members selected by the proposed framework.In addition,the software-defined secured(SDS)technique is integrated with SLCR-MLF to improve data integrity and optimize processing time in the IoT platform.Simulation analysis shows that the proposed framework outperforms conventional methods regarding the network’s lifetime,energy,secured data retrieval rate,and performance ratio.By enabling the proposed framework,number of residual nodes is reduced to 16%,energy consumption is reduced by up to 50%,almost 30%improvement in data retrieval rate,and network lifetime is improved by up to 1000 msec.

Increasingly,Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs)are contributing enormous amounts of data.Since the recent deployments of wireless sensor networks in Smart City infrastructures,significant volumes of data have been produced every day in several domains ranging from the environment to the healthcare system to transportation.Using wireless sensor nodes,a Smart City environment may now be shown for the benefit of residents.The Smart City delivers intelligent infrastructure and a stimulating environment to citizens of the Smart Society,including the elderly and others.Weak,Quality of Service(QoS)and poor data performance are common problems in WSNs,caused by the data fusion method,where a small amount of bad data can significantly impact the total fusion outcome.In our proposed research,a WSN multisensor data fusion technique employing fuzzy logic for event detection.Using the new proposed Algorithm,sensor nodes will collect less repeated data,and redundant data will be used to increase the data’s overall reliability.The network’s fusion delay problem is investigated,and a minimum fusion delay approach is provided based on the nodes’fusion waiting time.The proposed algorithm performs well in fusion,according to the results of the experiment.As a result of these discoveries,It is concluded that the algorithm describe here is effective and dependable instrument with a wide range of applications.

As the internet of things(IoT)endures to develop,a huge count of data has been created.An IoT platform is rather sensitive to security challenges as individual data can be leaked,or sensor data could be used to cause accidents.As typical intrusion detection system(IDS)studies can be frequently designed for working well on databases,it can be unknown if they intend to work well in altering network environments.Machine learning(ML)techniques are depicted to have a higher capacity at assisting mitigate an attack on IoT device and another edge system with reasonable accuracy.This article introduces a new Bird Swarm Algorithm with Wavelet Neural Network for Intrusion Detection(BSAWNN-ID)in the IoT platform.The main intention of the BSAWNN-ID algorithm lies in detecting and classifying intrusions in the IoT platform.The BSAWNN-ID technique primarily designs a feature subset selection using the coyote optimization algorithm(FSS-COA)to attain this.Next,to detect intrusions,the WNN model is utilized.At last,theWNNparameters are optimally modified by the use of BSA.Awidespread experiment is performed to depict the better performance of the BSAWNNID technique.The resultant values indicated the better performance of the BSAWNN-ID technique over other models,with an accuracy of 99.64%on the UNSW-NB15 dataset.
