Near-diurnal vertically-standing waves with high vertical wavenumbers k z were observed in the velocity and shear fi elds from a set of 75-d long ADCP moored in the northeastern South China Sea(SCS)away from the“critical”latitude of 28.8°.These enhanced near-diurnal internal waves followed a fortnightly spring-neap ***,they always happened during semidiurnal spring tides rather than diurnal springs although strong diurnal internal tides with the fortnightly spring-neap cycle were prevailing,suggesting that they were generated via subharmonic instability(PSI)of dominant semidiurnal M 2 internal *** two semidiurnal internal tidal waves with opposite vertical propagation direction intersected,both semidiurnal subharmonic and super harmonic waves were largely intensifi *** observed maximum diurnal velocity amplitudes were up to 0.25 m/*** kinetic energy and shear spectra further suggested that frequencies of daughter waves were not always perfectly equal to M 2/*** superposition of two daughter waves with nearly equal frequencies and nearly opposite k z in a PSI-triad leaded to the vertically-standing waves.

Microstructure and hydrological profiles were collected along two cross-shelf sections from the deep slope to the shallow water in the north of Taiwan Island in the summer of *** the tidal currents on the shelf were dominated by the barotropic tide with the current ellipse stretched across the shelf,significant internal tides were observed on the *** depth-mean turbulent kinetic energy(TKE)dissipation rate on the shelf was 10^-6W kg^-1,corresponding to a diapycnal diffusivity of 10^-2 m^2s^-*** depth-mean TKE dissipation rate on the slope was 1×10^-7 Wkg^-1,with diapycnal diffusivity of 3×10^-4m^2s^-*** shear instability associated with internal tides largely contributed to the TKE dissipation rate on the slope from the surface to 150 m,while the enhanced turbulence on the shelf was dominated by tidal or residual current dissipations caused by friction in the thick bottom boundary layer(BBL).In the BBL,the Ekman currents associated with the northeastward Taiwan Warm Current were identified,showing a near-bottom velocity spiral,which agreed well with the analytical bottom Ekman solution.

By analyzing a data set collected using a moored instrument array and CTD during TOGA-COARE, it is found that there exist remarkable internal tides in the western equatorial Pacific Ocean around 1°45′S, 156°E, whose horizontal wavenumber （wavelength）, vertical wavenumber, h 156° orizontal propagation speed and vertical propagation speed are 3.3×10^-2 km^-1 （210 km）, - 1.6×10^-3m, 2.0 m/s and -3.8 cm/s, respectively, that is, the waveform propagates downwards slantingly. Moreover, the propagating direction rotates statistically clockwise as the depth increases and its cause is unclear.

Performance Evaluation of Three Parameterizations on internal Tidal Mixing in the Northern Pacific

The accurate assessment of the energy dissipation of internal tides(ITs)is of great importance because ITs contribute significantly to abyssal ***,in this study,the IT-driven dissipation and diapycnal diffusion in the northern Pacific are esti-mated using parameterizations proposed by *** et al.(2002),Koch-Larrouy et al.(2007),and de Lavergne et al.(2020)(hereaf-ter referred to as LSJ02,KL07,and dL20,respectively).The performances of the three parameterizations are evaluated by comparing the calculated results with fine structure *** particular,the dissipation estimated by LSJ02 parameterization shows a bottom-intensified characteristic,with the patterns showing good agreement with the observations near ***,43%of the results calculated using the LSJ02 parameterization have errors lower than one order of magnitude in the generation sites of ***,the strongest dissipation estimated by the KL07 parameterization shifts to the thermocline,with the results showing the highest level of consistency with observations in the generation *** proportion of results with errors lower than one order of magnitude is 80.7%.Furthermore,the results calculated by dL20 parameterization agree well with the observations in the upper and middle layers,with the parameterization showing an accurate estimation of the remote *** percentages of the errors lower than one order of magnitude between the dL20 parameterization and observations account for 77.1%and 88.7%in the genera-tion sites and far-field regions,respectively.

The water column structure of the ice shelf cavity outflow from under Pine Island Glacier and its temporal variability were investigated using a hourly time series of yo-yo CTD and LADCP data collected over -24 h at the southern end of the ice shelf front. The primary water types present over the continental shelf off Pine Island Bay were Circumpolar Deep Water （CDW）, modified Circumpolar Deep Water （mCDW）, Shelf Water （SW）, and Ice Shelf Water （ISW）. As CDW transited the shelf, it transitioned into cooler, mCDW. In the upper 200 m, ISW dominated within 100 km of the ice shelf and SW further offshore. Within Pine Island Bay, the water column was partitioned into two primary layers based on their behavior： an upper outflowing layer from 100 m to 450 m composed of ISW with a significant meltwater component, 1%-2%, over an inflowing layer from -550 m to the sea bed composed of mCDW. Due to the small cavity extent, the outflowing water was warmer than the seawater freezing point. The upper ISW layer was further split into upper ISW layer #1 （100-300 m） and upper ISW layer #2 （320450 m） with the transition coinciding with the ice shelf draft. Small step-like features with heights from 1-50 m existed within both the ISW layers and were more prominent in upper ISW layer #1. A baroclinic signal at the semidiurnal frequency existed within both primary layers with the strongest signal, - 10 cm·s^-1, propagating vertically in the upper ISW layer.
