Electrochemical study on preparation of Mg-Li-Yb alloys in LiCl-KCl-KF-MgCl_2-Yb_2O_3 melts

This paper presented a novel study on electrochemical codeposition of Mg-Li-Yb alloys in LiCl-KCl-KF-MgCl2-Yb2O3 melts on molybdenum. The factors of the current efficiency were investigated. Electrolysis temperature had great influence on current efficiency; the highest current efficiency was obtained when electrolysis temperature was about 660 oC. The content of Li in Mg-Li-Yb alloys increased with the high current densities. The optimal electrolytic temperature and cathodic current density were around 660 oC and 9.3 A/cm2, respectively. The chemical content, phases, morphology of the alloys and the distribution of the elements were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, respectively. The intermetallic of Mg-Yb was mainly distributed in the grain boundary of the alloys, presented as reticulated structures, and refined the grains. The lithium and ytterbium contents in Mg-Li-Yb al-loys could be controlled by changing the concentration of MgCl2 and Yb2O3 and the electrolysis conditions.

We systematically investigate the internal friction properties of a Fe-(43 at.%)Al powder mixture compact during the heating process with the expectation to understand the phase formation and transition *** internal friction peaks are successively observed during the heating process from room temperature to 750℃,but almost completely disappear in the subsequent cooling *** internal friction peaks exhibit obvious measuring frequency dependence,which increases with decreasing the *** first internal friction peak originates from the micro-sliding of weak bonding interface between Al particles corresponding to a *** process of deformed Al *** second internal friction peak is attributed to a phase formation process associated with the formation of the intermediate phase *** third internal friction peak is considered to result from the formation of the FeAl intermetallic compound owing to the reaction of Fe2Al5 and residual Fe initiated by a dramatic thermal explosion reaction.

Synchrotron X-ray radiography was used to carry out an in-situ observation of the hydrogen bubble evolution in the liquid Al/solid Ni interconnection. The individual bubble mainly grows in a stochastic way during heating. The size distribution for groups of bubbles follows a Gaussian distribution in the early stage and Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner(LSW) diffusion controlled distribution in the final stage. The intermetallic compounds(IMCs) first form during solidification, following by the hydrogen bubbles. The bubbles between two adjacent Al3Ni grains grow unidirectionally along the liquid channel, with the bottom being impeded by the Al3Ni phase and the radius of the growth front being smaller. For the bubbles at triple junctions, they grow along the liquid channel and the crack with morphology transition.

The mechanical behavior of Fes Si based alloy with B2 structure was studied by tension and fracture toughness test in various testing media. The fracture strength σb of Fe3Si alloy decreased in the following order: oxygen, air and hydrogen respectively. The fracture toughness in different testing environment showed that KIC in oxygen is 11.5±0.3MPa·m1/2, and is 8.6±0.4MPa·ml/2 in distilled water. The reduction of fracture toughness is contributed to the environmental reaction of Si with water. Addition of Al element in Fe3Si is not beneficial to improve the intrinsic ductility of Fe-14Si-3Al alloy. The scattering phenomenon of fracture strength was found, and explained by fracture mechanics. It was found by means of SEM that the fracture mode changed from transgranular in oxygen to intergranular in hydrogen gas and distilled water.

Interfacial reactions between aluminium and polycrystalline cermet TiC_(0.6) were investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,Auger electron spectroscopy and x-ray *** was found that titanium exists in two chemical *** carbide and oxide of titanium can be detected simultaneously,and the atomic ratio of Ti:C:O is 5:3:*** suggests that TiC^(0.6) is a Ti-oxycarbide or oxygenated TiC composite:Ti_(5)C_(3)O_(2)(TiO_(2)+4TiC_(0.75)).When Al is deposited in vacuum on the Ti-oxycarbide surface,the active Al atoms react chemically only with TiO_(2) at room temperature,but not with Tico.75 in *** reaction products are Al2O3 and theintermetallic compound Als *** the Al/TiC_(0.6) interface at 750℃,Al reacts also with TiC_(0.75) to form a brittle Al_(4)C_(3) phase.

The status of research, development of superalloys and materials processing ＆ fabrication technologies for aero-engine applications in China Aviation Industry, with an emphasis on recent achievements at BIAM including directionally solidified and single crystal superalloys for blade and vane applications, wrought superqlloys for aero-engine disks and rings, and powder metalurgy （PM） superalloys for high performance disk applications were described. It was also reviewed the development of new class of high temperature structural materials, such as structural intermetallics, and advanced material processing technologies including rapid solidification, spray forming and so on. The trends of research and development of the above mentioned superalloys and processing technologies are outlined. Cast, wrought and PM superalloys are the workhorse materials for the hot section of current aero-engines. New high temperature materials and advanced processing technologies have been and will be the subject of study. It is speculated that high performance, high purity and low cost superalloys and technologies will play key roles in aero-engines.

The effects of different Bi contents on the properties of Sn solders were studied. The interfacial reaction and growth behavior of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) layer(7/-Cu6Sn5 + e-Cu3Sn) for various soldering time and the influence of Bi addition on the thermal behavior of Sn-xBi solder alloys were investigated. The Cu6Sn5 IMC could be observed as long as the molten solder contacted with the Cu substrate. However, with the longer welding time such as 60 and 300 s, the Cu3Sn IMC was formed at the interface between Cu6Sn5 and Cu substrate. With the increase of soldering time, the thickness of total IMCs increased, meanwhile, the grain size of Cu6Sn5 also increased. An appropriate amount of Bi element was beneficial for the growth of total IMCs, but excessive Bi (≥ 5 wt%) inhibited the growth of Cu6Sn5 and Cu3Sn IMC in Sn-xBi/ Cu microelectronic interconnects. Furthermore, with the Bi contents increasing (Sn-l0Bi solder in this present investigation), some Bi particles accumulated at the interface between Cu6Sn5 layer and the solder.

A new intermetallic compound,YbCu6In6,has been synthesized by solid-state reaction of the corresponding pure elements in a welded tantalum tube at high *** crystal structure was established by single-crystal X-ray ***6In6 crystallizes in tetragonal space group I4/mmm with a = 9.2283（5）,c = 5.4015（4）,V = 460.00（5） 3,Z = 2,Mr = 1243.20,Dc = 8.976 g/cm3,μ = 38.243 mm-1,F（000） = 1076,and the final R = 0.0258 and wR = 0.0602 for 173 observed reflections with I 〉 2σ（I）.The structure of YbCu6In6 belongs to the ThMn12 *** is isostructural with RECu6In6（RE = Y,Ce,Pr,Nd,Gd,Tb,Dy）,containing one-dimensional（1D） [Cu10In6] cluster chain along the c axis,which is interconnected via sharing the Cu（1） atoms to form a three-dimensional（3D） [Cu6In6] framework with Yb atoms encapsulated in the 1D tunnels along the c *** structure calculations based on Density Functional Theory（DFT） method indicate that YbCu6In6 is metallic.
