Measurement of lateral ventricle volume of normal infant based on magnetic resonance imaging

Background:Many neurophysiological diseases during infancy stage are associated with the morphology and size of the lateral ventricle.This research aims to measure the normal value range of lateral ventricle volume of normal infant and thus provide basic data for clinical treatment.Method:By retrospective analysis of magnetic resonance inspection (MRI) cranial image of 165 infants in the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery,Beijing Tiantan Hospital,the infants were divided into four groups according to their age,including the first group (1~3 month,n =12),the second group (4~6 month,n =33),the third group (7~9 month,n =51),and the fourth group (10~12 month,n =69).On Neurosoft image workstation,it can measure the sectional area of the lateral ventricle volume at each layer of axis T2W image and calculate the lateral ventricle volume using the Cavalieri method.Moreover,the correlations between lateral ventricle volume and gender,side difference,and month age were analyzed.Results:95% confidence interval of total bilateral ventricle volume of normal infant:11920.22~14,266.28 mm3 for male infant and 9922.22~12,263.17 mm3 for female infant;95% confidence interval of left side ventricle volume:6254.72~7546.94 mm3 for male infant and 5206.03~6479.99 mm3 for female infant;95% confidence interval of right side ventricle volume:5041.56~6743.29 mm3 for male infant and 4695.00~5804.40 mm3 for female infant.The lateral ventricle volume of the male infant was normally larger than that of the female infant (p infants,the left side ventricle volume was larger than the right ventricle volume (p infants over 3 months old.Conclusion:The normal value range of lateral ventricle volume of the infant can be obtained via referring MRI image.The lateral ventricle volume of infant varies upon gender and ventricle side.

1|INTRODUCTION Ecthyma gangrenosum(EG)is a rare invasive cutaneous infection primarily caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in immunosuppressed patients.It is characterized by a painless necrotic ulceration with a surrounding erythematous halo and is usually associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa septicemia.EG is extremely rare in the periorbital region,and there have been no other reported infant cases with orbital bone erosion.

To the Editor:A 4-month-old girl was brought to the Department of Ophthalmology in the Children’s Hospital,School of Medicine,Zhejiang University,due to"sudden eyeball shaking for a week."The patient was a full-term gravida 2 para 2 infant without any incidence of trauma/surgery;further,the family’s medical history did not reveal any risk factors.Ophthalmological examination revealed bilateral horizontal tremor of the eyes,and both eyes showed light-chasing response.The anterior segment examination was normal.

To the Editor:Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA)comprises a group of disorders that manifest as early-or late-onset parkinsonism,dystonia,spasticity,and cognitive impairment, One subtype of NBIA,β-propeller protein-associated neurodegeneration (BPAN),is caused by mutation of the WDR45 gene.To date,59 novel WDR45 mutations have been reported.The literature indicates that it is difficult to detect the disorder in early childhood because no specific clinical or imaging features exist. In this report,we describe the case of a 9-month-old male Chinese infant with a novel mutation (c.977-1 C >T)in the WDR45 gene.

Pubo-Penile Testicular Ectopia (ETPP) of the infant of 4 Months about a Case

Pubo-penile testicular ectopia is a rare congenital malformation whose etiopathogenesis remains poorly understood. It represents other testicular ectopias less than 1% of all testicular migration disorders. We report a clinical observation of a 4-month-old infant who consulted for swelling at the root of the penis associated with vacuity of the right hemi scrotum. An inguinal ultrasound was performed which confirmed the presence of the right testicle. An orchidopexy was performed at 4 months of life by an inguinal approach, the postoperative course was simple with a follow-up of 6 months.

Non-invasive home ventilation using the average volume assured pressure support feature in an infant with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia and chronic respiratory failure

Introduction:While majority of infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia(BPD)can be discharged home without low flow oxygen or on supplemental low flow oxygen,some require long term home mechanical ventilation.Case presentation:We present a case of an extremely premature infant with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia who was successfully managed at home on a new feature of non-invasive ventilation called average volume assured pressure support(AVAPS)without the need for tracheostomy.The AVAPS feature enables the machine to deliver a consistent tidal volume by automatically adjusting the inspiratory pressure within a set range.Conclusion:The use of AVAPS feature in our case improved ventilation as indicated by a more stable gas exchange profile,making home non-invasive ventilation a more practicable method of managing severe BPD in this infant.

Tuberculosis(TB)continues to be one of the major infectious diseases threatening millions of lives worldwide.[1]We encountered a 52-day-old male infant with a anterior mediastinal mass caused by tuberculosis.On admission to our hospital,the infant presented with respiratory distress,wheezing,fever,and cough.Decreased breath sounds were audible at the apex of the left chest.His temperature was 38.2℃.

Congenital Lobar Emphysema in an infant: A Case Report from the University Hospital of Mali

Congenital lobar emphysema is characterized by distress due to hyperinflation of the affected lung lobe(s). We report the case of a 2-month-old infant with congenital left lower lobe emphysema. A 2-month-old female infant, born at term without incident, was hospitalized for respiratory distress. On a postnatal day 15, respiratory distress occurred. On admission, he weighed 3400 g and was apyretic. He had a polypnea of 58 cycles/min and a oxygen saturation of hemoglobin of 90% on room air. A chest radiograph revealed hyperclarity of the left lung. Chest CT revealed left lower lobe emphysema. He underwent a left lower lobectomy. The postoperative course was uneventful. He was discharged from the hospital 7 days after surgery without sequelae. Physicians should be aware that congenital lobar emphysema can present with respiratory distress in infants. A chest CT scan confirms the diagnosis. Surgical treatment is effective.

Sequential testis sparing surgery of simultaneous bilateral testicular tumors with different cell types in a Chinese infant:an uncommon presentation

Dear Editor, Patients of bilateral pediatric testicular tumors and bilateral testicular teratoma or yolk sac tumor (YST) were rarely reported, and there was still no standard therapy. However, synchronous bilateral testicular tumors with different histology were a quite rare situation. We reported the first case of successful radical orchiectomy in the left scrotum and testicular sparing surgery in the right testis sequentially. No atrophy or residual tumor in the right testis and no recurrence in the left scrotum were found after 7 years of follow-up. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of Childrens Hospital of Shanghai, which was affiliated to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, School of Medicine, Shanghai, China. Informed consent was obtained from his parents.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterised by periorificial dermatitis, alopecia and diarrhoea. It is caused by a mutation in the gene that codes for a membrane protein that binds zinc. We report a case in a 7-month-old girl, admitted with altered general condition and scaly, pustular erythematous lesions, initially located in the occipital and cervical regions, and secondarily inguinal and on the knees. Management and outcome in this patient? Genetic assay was not available to confirm this rare genetic disease. A delay in establishing the diagnosis and a disastrous outcome did not save the patient despite the administration of zinc.
