World steel Association has projected indian apparent steel consumption to grow at 6.9 percent during 2012 and 9.4 percent during *** this basis,India’s steel consumption is projected to be in the region of 80 million tons by 2013. According to national steel strategists,India should target a domestic steel capability of 200 million tons by *** will necessitate putting in place a proper plan for substantial augmentation of domestic *** a plan must also ensure the long term sustainability of the indian steel *** paper reviews the four major factors that would significantly contribute towards ensuring the long term sustainability of the indian steel industry,namely,(ⅰ) adoption of appropriate production processes/technologies,(ⅱ) proper utilization of locally available raw materials,(ⅲ) ensuring adequate financial viability under varying market conditions,and(ⅳ) limiting the harmful effects on the environment through improved *** availability and characteristics of indian raw materials,*** ore and coal,are discussed,including possibilities of utilizing large resources of low grade iron ore and high ash ***,the current levels of energy intensity and CO emission by the indian steel industry are reviewed,and possible measures suggested for reducing the carbon foot print,including adoption of newer/emerging process routes that are expected to be techno-commercially viable.
