Planar ion chip design for scalable quantum information processing

We investigate a planar ion chip design with a two-dimensional array of linear ion traps for scalable quantum information processing. Qubits are formed from the internal electronic states of trapped ^40Ca^＋ ions. The segmented electrodes reside in a single plane on a substrate and a grounded metal plate separately, a combination of appropriate rf and DC potentials is applied to them for stable ion confinement. Every two adjacent electrodes can generate a linear ion trap in and between the electrodes above the chip at a distance dependent on the geometrical scale and other considerations. The potential distributions are calculated by using a static electric field qualitatively. This architecture provides a conceptually simple avenue to achieving the microfabrication and large-scale quantum computation based on the arrays of trapped ions.

A potential scheme is proposed for generating cluster states of many trapped ions in thermal motion, in which the effective Hamiltonian does not involve the external degree of freedom and thus the scheme is insensitive to the external state, allowing it to be thermal state. The required experimental techniques of the schemes are within the scope that can be obtained in the ion-trap setup.

The average kinetic energy of 40 Ca＋ ions is measured by the method of evaporating ions in an rf ion trap. The kinetic energy of the ion 40Ca＋ varies from 0.5eV to 0.2eV with changing buffer gas pressure from 10^-7 mbar to 10^-5 mbar. The Brownian motion model is also introduced to calculate the average kinetic energy of the trapped ions.

An accurate and rapid method is proposed to optimize anharmonie linear surface-electrode ion trap design. Based on the method, we analyze the impact of the architectural parameters, including the width, number, and applied voltage of prerequisite active electrodes, on the number and spacing of trapped ions. Sets of optimal anharmonic trap design are given. Then the optimal designs are verified by using an ant colony optimization algorithm. The results show that the maximum ion position errors and maximum ion spacing errors are less than 1 μm up to 80. The mean of the maximum errors is nearly linear with respect to the number of trapped ions.

40Ca＋ ions are trapped and laser cooled in a miniature Paul trap. The secular motion was observed by the radio-frequency resonance of the ion cloud and Zeeman profile sidebands of a single ion experimentally. The trap stability parameters a and q are determined with an uncertainty under 1% by the secular motion frequency measurement. The trap efficiency is 0.75. A practicable suggestion is given for the benefits of a new trap design.

Validity of Lamb-Dicke Approximations in ion-Trap Systems

The Lamb-Dicke （LD） approximation （LDA） is usually utilized to simplify the treatments for the dynamics of ion-trap systems, where the so-called LD parameters should be sufficiently small. In this Letter, based on the quantum dynamics of a single trapped ion beyond the LDA, we discuss the fidelities of the control-NOT （CNOT） gate generated by performing the usual LDA. It is shown that the fidelity of the generated CNOT gate under the LDA is sufficiently high for the current LD experiments, e.g., it reaches 99.9% for η=0.20. The validity of the LDA is also discussed by calculating these fidelities for slightly larger LD parameters, e.g., η=0.4, etc.

A simple and scalable scheme is proposed to generate a n-qubit W state in a trapped-ion system without the Lamb-Dicke limit. The n-qubit W state can be generated by the interaction between the ions and the laser field if the collective mode is initially prepared in the single-phonon state and each ion is in the ground state. The scheme only requires a single laser and avoids laser manipulation of the individual ion. The time required to complete the process decreases with the number of ions. The present scheme is not limited to small values of the LD parameter, which greatly enhances operation speeds.

Measurement of the KLL Dielectronic Recombination Resonances in He-like to C-like Kr ions

The KLL dielectronic recombination processes of highly charged He-like to C-like Kr ions have been studied experimentally. The measurement was performed on the newly developed Shanghai electron beam ion trap （Shanghai-EBIT） facility. Characteristic x-rays from both dielectronic recombination and radiative recombination are detected as the electron beam energy is scanned through the resonances. The KLL resonant strengths obtained are 5.41×10^-19, 4.33×10^-19, 3.59×10^-19, 2.05×10^-19 and 0.98×10^-19 cm^2 eV for He-like to C-like Kr ions, respectively.
