AIM： To investigate the individual and combined effects of allopurinol and hyperbaric oxygen （HBO） therapy on biochemical and histopathological changes, oxidative stress, and bacterial translocation （BT） in the experimental rat acute pancreatitis （AP）. METHODS： Eighty-five Sprague-Dawley rats were included in the study. Fifteen of the eighty-five rats were used as controls （sham, Group I ）. AP was induced via intraductal taurocholate infusion in the remaining seventy rats. Rats that survived to induction of acute necrotizing pancreatitis were randomized into four groups. Group H received saline, Group m allopurinol, Group IV allopurinol plus HBO and Group v HBO alone. Serum amylase levels, oxidative stress parameters, BT and histopathologic scores were determined. RESULTS： Serum amylase levels were lower in Groups Ⅲ, Ⅳ and v compared to Group H （974 ± 110, 384 ± 40, 851 ＋ 56, and 1664 Ⅳ 234 U/L, respectively, P 〈 0.05, for all）. Combining the two treatment optionsrevealed significantly lower median [25-75 percentiles] histopathological scores when compared to individual administrations （13 [12.5-15] in allopurinol group, 9.5 [7-11.75] in HBO group, and 6 [4.5-7.5] in combined group, P 〈 0.01）. Oxidative stress markers were significantly better in all treatment groups compared to the controls. Bacterial translocation into the pancreas and mesenteric lymph nodes was lower in Groups m, iV and v compared to Group H （54%, 23%, 50% vs 100% for translocation to pancreas, and 62%, 46%, 58% vs 100% for translocation to mesenteric lymph nodes, respectively, P 〈 0.05 for all）. CONCLUSION： The present study confirms the benefit of HBO and allopurinol treatment when administered separately in experimental rat AP. Combination of these treatment options appears to prevent progression of pancreatic injury parameters more effectively.

Changes in serum cellular adhesion molecule and matrix metalloproteinase-9 levels in patients with cerebral infarction following hyperbaric oxygen therapy A case and intergroup control study

BACKGROUND： Animal studies have confirmed that hyperbaric oxygen （HBO） therapy can reduce matrix metalloproteinase activity and blood brain barrier permeability, thereby exhibiting neuroprotective effects. However, at present, consensus does not exist in terms of its clinical efficacy. OBJECTIVE： To validate the significance of changes in serum cellular adhesion molecule and MMP-9 levels in patients with cerebral infarction following HBO therapy. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： This randomized, controlled, neurobiochemical study was performed at the Department of Neurology, Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University Medical College between December 2002 and March 2006. PARTICIPANTS： A total of 112 patients with acute cerebral infarction of internal carotid artery, comprising 64 males and 48 females, averaging （67 ±11） years, were recruited and randomized to a HBO group （n = 50） and a routine treatment group （n = 62）. An additional 30 gender- and age-matched normal subjects, consisting of 17 males and 13 females, averaging （63 ± 9） years, were enrolled as control subjects. METHODS： The routine treatment group received routine drug treatment and rehabilitation exercise. HBO treatment was additionally performed in the HBO group, once a day, for a total of 10 days. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Serum levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule, soluble E-selectin, and matrix metalloproteinase-9 were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS： Upon admission, serum levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule, soluble E-selectin, and matrix metalloproteinase-9 were significantly increased in patients with cerebral infarction, compared with control subjects （P 〈 0.01）. Following HBO and routine treatments, serum levels of the above-mentioned indices were significantly reduced in the HBO and routine treatment groups （P 〈 0.01）. This study aimed to investgate whether hyperbaric oxygen(HBO) could ameliorate insulin sensitivity, promoting glucose transporter type 4(GLUT4) membrane translocation in muscle and energy metabolism in brown adipose tissue from a streptozocin(STZ)-induced Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2 DM) mice *** C57 BL/6 J mice were rendered three times low-dose streptozocin(60 mg/kg, i.p.) fed with high-fat diets(HFD) to build T2 DM *** was conducted daily by giving 100% oxygen at 2.0 atmosphere absolute(ATA) for 1 hour for a ***, HBO significantly reduced blood glucose and attenuated insulin resistance in T2 *** modulated the food intake by influencing the activity of neuropeptide Y(NPY)-positive neurons in Arcuate nucleus(Arc).Immunofluorescence showed that GLUT4 membrane translocation is increased induced by HBO in T2 DM but not in HFD mice, as well as phosphorylated Akt(p-Akt)level measured by western blot ***, morphology staining of BAT and increasing uncoupling protein 1(UCP1) expression show the promoting metabolism after HBO *** conclusion, HBO ameliorate insulin sensitivity to enhance Akt signaling pathway, promoting GLUT4 membrane translocation in muscle and energy metabolism in BAT in T2 DM mice.

Influence of hyperbaric oxygen on the differentiation of hypoxic/ischemic brainderived neural stem cells

BACKGROUND： It has been previously shown that hyperbaric oxygen may promote proliferation of neural stem cells and reduce death of endogenous neural stem cells （NSCs）. OBJECTIVE： To explore the effects of hyperbaric oxygen on the differentiation of hypoxic/ischemic brain-derived NSCs into neuron-like cells and compare with high-concentration oxygen and high pressure. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： An in vitro contrast study, performed at Laboratory of Neurology, Central South University between January and May 2006. MATERIALS： A hyperbaric oxygen chamber （YLC 0.5/1A） was provided by Wuhan Shipping Design Research Institute; mouse anti-rat microtubule-associated protein 2 monoclonal antibody by Jingmei Company, Beijing; mouse anti-rat glial fibrillary acidic protein monoclonal antibody by Neo Markers, USA; mouse anti-rat galactocerebroside monoclonal antibody by Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc., USA; and goat anti-mouse fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled secondary antibody by Wuhan Boster Bioengineering Co., Ltd., China. METHODS： Brain-derived NSCs isolated from brain tissues of neonatal Sprague Dawley rats were cloned and passaged, and assigned into five groups： normal control, model, high-concentration oxygen, high pressure, and hyperbaric oxygen groups. Cells in the four groups, excluding the normal control group, were incubated in serum-containing DMEM/F12 culture medium. Hypoxic/ischemic models of NSCs were established in an incubator comprising 93% N2, 5% 002, and 2% 02. Thereafter, cells were continuously cultured as follows： compressed air （0.2 MPa, 1 hour, once a day） in the high pressure group, compressed air ＋ a minimum of 80% 02 in the hyperbaric oxygen group, and a minimum of 80% Q2 in the high-concentration oxygen group. Cells in the normal control and model groups were cultured as normal. Three-dimensional finite element analysis of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the optic nerve from a damaged orbit

A middle-aged male patient with a right orbital comminuted fracture underwent computer tomography scanning, and a three-dimensional finite element model of the eyes and relevant tissues was established. Optic nerve stress in a hyperbaric oxygen environment was simulated and analyzed by changing the elastic modulus and external pressure of the skull at the damage side. Results showed that stress maximized at the contact site of the optic nerve and the eyeball in the damaged and intact eye orbits. Optic nerve stress at the damaged orbit significantly increased; however, stress in the intact orbit only slightly changed with decreased elastic modulus of the skull while external pressure remained unchanged. Maximum optic nerve stress increased in the damaged and intact side, along with increased external pressure, while elastic modulus remained unchanged. These experimental findings suggested that the optic nerve was compressed under hyperbaric oxygen and optic nerve stress was greater in the damaged orbit than in the intact orbit.

Neuroprotection of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in sub-acute traumatic brain injury:not by immediately improving cerebral oxygen saturation and oxygen partial pressure

Although hyperbaric oxygen （HBO） therapy can promote the recovery of neural function in patients who have suffered traumatic brain injury （TBI）, the underlying mechanism is unclear. We hypothesized that hyperbaric oxygen treatment plays a neuroprotective role in TBI by increasing regional transcranial oxygen saturation （rSO2） and oxygen partial pressure （PaO2）. To test this idea, we compared two groups： a control group with 20 healthy people and a treatment group with 40 TBI patients. The 40 patients were given 100% oxygen of HBO for 90 minutes. Changes in rSO2 were measured. The controls were also examined for rSO2 and PaO2, but received no treatment, rSO2 levels in the patients did not differ significantly after treatment, but levels before and after treatment were significantly lower than those in the control group. PaO2 levels were significantly decreased after the 30-minute HBO treatment. Our findings suggest that there is a disorder of oxygen metabolism in patients with sub-acute TBI. HBO does not immediately affect cerebral oxygen metabolism, and the underlying mechanism still needs to be studied in depth.

Effects of hyperbaric oxygen and Pgg-glucan on ischemic colon anastomosis

AIM： In colorectal surgery, anastomotic failure is still a problem in ischemia. Here, we analyzed the effects of hyperbaric oxygen and beta-glucan on colon anastomoses in ischemic condition. METHODS： Colonic resection and anastomosis in rectosigmoid region were done in forty Wistar-Albino rats of four groups of equal number. Colon mesentery was ligated to induce ischemia. The first group was the control group. The subjects of second group were treated with hyperbaric oxygen; the third group with glucan and the forth group were treated with both. At the forth day, rats were sacrificed, anastomotic segment was resected and burst pressures and hydroxyproline levels of anastomotic line were measured. RESULTS： The burst pressure difference of second and third groups from the control group were meaningful （P〈0.01）; the forth group differed significantly from the control （P〈0.001）. There was no difference between the treated groups on burst pressure level （P〉0.05）. The hydroxyproline levels in all treated groups were different from the control group significantly （P〈0.001）. Hydroxyproline levels in the forth group were higher than those of the second and the third groups （P〈 0.001）. There were no significant differences between the second and the fourth groups in burst pressure and hydroxyproline levels （P〉 0.05）. CONCLUSION： hyperbaric oxygen and glucan improve healing in ischemic colon anastomoses by anti-microbic,immune stimulating properties and seem to act synergistically when combined together.

Practice of the fourth national hyperbaric oxygen medicine week publicity campaign in China

Objective:We launched the fourth national hyperbaric oxygen(HBO)medicine week publicity campaign in China to increase patients’and medical professionals’understanding of HBO medicine and expand the influence of ***:The theme of 2019 was“oxygen protects life,healthy China”.The main components of the campaign were free medical consultation,free HBO experience,and telemedicine *** least one component was required for each participating ***:(1)In total,195 hospitals in 26 provinces,autonomous regions,and municipalities directly under the central government participated in the *** province of China had the highest number of hospitals in a single area(48 hospitals);(2)The free medical consultation was organized by the HBO *** some hospitals,other medical professionals were also *** all hospitals,up to 13 different HBO-related departments participated;(3)The free HBO experiences were held in some hospitals,and the number of experiences ranged from one to three per person;(4)Three telemedicine lectures involving a total of 8 live interactions were held in 55 different *** videos were provided to play locally in hospitals without the setting necessary for live ***:Our campaigns created a brand effect beginning in *** the herein-described 2019 study,we considered the previous three campaigns and explored different methods of publicizing HBO medicine in China,including telemedicine.

Effects of hyperbaric oxygen on intestinal mucosa apoptosis caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats

BACKGROUND:hyperbaric oxygen(HBO)is an effective adjuvant therapy for ischemiareperfusion(I/R)injury of the brain,small intestine and testis in addition to crushing *** have shown that HBO increases the activity of villi of the ileum 30 minutes after I/R *** present study aimed to observe the effect of HBO on apoptosis of epithelial cells in the small intestine during different periods of I/R and to elucidate the potential ***:Rats were subjected to 60-minute ischemia by clamping the superior mesenteric artery and 60-minute reperfusion by removal of *** rats were randomly divided into four groups:I/R group,HBO precondition or HBO treatment before ischemia(HBO-P),HBO treatment during ischemia period(HBO-I),and HBO treatment during reperfusion(HBO-R).After 60-minute reperfusion,samples of the small intestine were prepared to measure the level of ATP by using the colorimetric method and immunochemical expression of *** levels of TNF-αin intestinal tissue were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method(Elisa).RESULTS:TNF-αlevels were significantly lower in the HBO-I group than in the HBO-P(P0.05).The expression of caspas-3 was significantly lower in the HBO-I group than in the HBO-P group(P<0.05);it was also significantly lower in the HBO-P group than in the I/R and HBO-R groups(P<0.05).ATP level was significantly lower in the HBO-I group than in the HBO-P group(P<0.05),and also it was significantly lower in the HBO-P group than in the I/R and HBO-R groups(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:There is an association between HBO,small intestinal I/R injury,and mucosa *** maintains ATP and aerobic metabolism,inhibites TNF-αproduction,and thus prevents intestinal mucosa from *** results can be obtained when HBO is administered to patients in the period of ischemia,and no side effects are produced when HB

Bone and Soft Tissue Blood Flow during Normobaric and hyperbaric oxygen Breathing in Healthy Divers

Purpose: The study aimed to investigate, using a photoplethysmographic (PPG) technique, how pulsatile blood flow within the patellar bone and skin over the patella reacts to normobaric (NBO) and hyperbaric oxygen breathing (HBO). Methods: Eleven healthy volunteers, breathed air or oxygen. Subjects were blinded to breathing gas. A range of partial pressures of oxygen were administered in 10 minute intervals: 21 kPa, 101 kPa (NBO), 21 kPa, (compression to 280 kPa), 59 kPa, 280 kPa (HBO), 59 kPa, (decompression), and 21 kPa. Changes were measured continuously for each individual. Results: Hyperoxia decreased pulsatile patellar blood flow ~32 resp. 38% and skin blood flow ~36 resp. 42% during the first 2 - 3 minutes of NBO resp. HBO. This decrease was normalized within 5 minutes after exposure. The results were similar when switching from air to NBO (101 kPa) and from air at pressure (59 kPa) to HBO (280 kPa). Conclusions: The study shows that pulsatile patellar skin and bone blood flow, decreases significantly as a reaction to oxygen breathing in healthy subjects. The results suggest that a non-invasive PPG technique could be used to monitor blood flow changes in bone during oxygen treatment.
