Simulation of hydraulic fracture utilizing numerical manifold method

A 2nd order numerical manifold method(NMM) based method is developed to simulate the hydraulic fractures propagating process in rock or concrete. The proposed method uses a weak coupling technique to analyze the fluid phase and solid phase. To study the seepage behavior of the fluid phase, all the fractures in solid are identified by a block cutting algorithm and form a flow network. Then the hydraulic heads at crack ends are solved. To study the deformation and destruction of solid phase, the 2-order NMM and sub-region boundary element method are combined to solve the stress-strain field. Crack growth is controlled by the well-accepted criterion, including the tension criterion or Mohr-Coulomb criterion for the initialization of cracks and the maximum circumferential stress theory for crack propagation. Once the crack growth occurs, the seepage and deformation analysis will be resolved in the next simulation step. Such weak coupling analysis will continue until the structure becomes stable or is destructed. Five examples are used to verify the new method. The results demonstrate that the method can solve the SIFs at crack tip and fluid flow in crack network precisely, and the method is effective in simulating the hydraulic facture problem. Besides, the NMM shows great convenience and is of high accuracy in simulating the crack growth problem.

hydraulic fracturing is one of the most important techniques for enhancing oil/gas *** permeability-based hydraulic fracture(PHF)model,which is based on the smeared-crack method and considers the interaction between the pore pressure and solid phase,is adopted in the present study for a fully-coupled simulation of the hydraulic fracture in a heterogeneous rock *** level set method(LSM),which is used to describe the distribution of material properties of heterogeneous rocks,is coupled with the PHF *** the coupled PHF–LSM model,a series of finite element method(FEM)simulations are carried out to investigate the characteristics of a hydraulic fracture(e.g.,the breakdown pressure and fracture propagation)in heterogeneous *** types of heterogeneous rocks are examined:layered rock,rock with distributed inclusions,and rock with random spatial variations in the material *** results of the numerical simulations show that the coupled PHF–LSM model can describe the material interface without changing the FEM mesh used to discretize the physical ***,the model effectively simulates hydraulic-fracturing problems for various heterogeneous rocks.

A new model for predicting hydraulic fracture penetration or termination at an orthogonal interface between dissimilar formations

Vertical height growth of hydraulic fractures(HFs)can unexpectedly penetrate a stratigraphic interface and propagate into neighboring layers,thereby resulting in low gas-production efficiency and high risk of groundwater contamination or fault *** of hydraulic fracture behavior at the interface is of pivotal importance for the successful development of layered *** this paper,a twodimensional analytical model was developed to examine HF penetration and termination behavior at an orthogonal interface between two dissimilar *** model involves changes in the stress singularity ahead of the HF tip,which may alter at the formation interface due to material *** critical stress conditions were considered to assess possible fracture behavior(i.e.,crossing,slippage,and opening)at the ***,this model was verified by comparing its theoretical predictions to numerical simulations and three independent *** agreement with the simulation results and experimental data was observed,which shows the validity and reliability of this ***,a parametric study was conducted to investigate the effects of key formation parameters(elastic modulus,Poisson’s ratio,and fracture toughness)between adjacent *** results indicate that the variation in the introduced parameters can limit or promote vertical HF growth by redistributing the induced normal and shear stresses at the *** the three studied parameters,Poisson’s ratio has the least influence on the formation *** the fracture toughness and elastic modulus of the bounding layer are larger than those of the pay zone layer,the influence of fracture toughness will dominate the HF behavior at the interface;otherwise,the HF behavior will more likely be influenced by elastic modulus.

XFEM modeling of hydraulic fracture in porous rocks with natural fractures

hydraulic fracture （HF） in porous rocks is a complex multi-physics coupling process which involves fluid flow, diffusion and solid deformation. In this paper, the extended finite element method （XFEM） coupling with Biot theory is developed to study the HF in permeable rocks with natural fractures （NFs）. In the recent XFEM based computational HF models, the fluid flow in fractures and interstitials of the porous media are mostly solved separately, which brings difficulties in dealing with complex fracture morphology. In our new model the fluid flow is solved in a unified framework by considering the fractures as a kind of special porous media and introducing Poiseuille-type flow inside them instead of Darcy-type flow. The most advantage is that it is very convenient to deal with fluid flow inside the complex frac^xre network, which is important in shale gas extraction. The weak formulation for the new coupled model is derived based on virtual work principle, which includes the XFEM formulation for multiple fractures and fractures intersection in porous media and finite element formulation for the unified fluid flow. Then the plane strain Kristianovic-Geertsma-de Klerk （KGD） model and the fluid flow inside the fracture network are simulated to validate the accuracy and applicability of this method. The numerical results show that large injection rate, low rock permeability and isotropic in-situ stresses tend to lead to a more uniform and productive fracture network.

A mathematical model for solid liquid and mass transfer coupling and numerical simulation for hydraulic fracture in rock salt

The hydraulic fracture in rock salt is a complicated solid fluid and mass transfer coupling process. Through theoretical analysis, a solid fluid and mass transfer coupling mathematical model of hydraulic fracture in rock salt is established in this work, and numerical simulations are carried out with the model. The simulation results indicate that rock salt cracks in the typical way of wing-crack(or tensile crack) during the fracture, and the relation of fracture aperture (w) with expanding distance (x) and fracture time (t) is w=(0.0034+0.0006t)e (0.0007+0.0018t)x. Furthermore, it has been found that both the water pressure in the crack and the expanding velocity of the crack decrease gradually as a result of the influence of salt dissolving during fracturing. These numerical simulations well illustrate the process of hydraulic fracture in rock salt and are significantly meaningful in engineering practice.

hydraulic fracturing with horizontal well is an effective technology for the unconventional resources development,especially for the shale gas,tight gas and *** fracturing,sequential fracturing and alternating fracturing were the main technologies applied in the horizontal well *** on the extended finite element method,the 2 D seepage-stress-damage models for simulating fracture propagation of simultaneous fracturing,sequential fracturing and alternating fracturing were proposed to investigate the influence of fracture sequence on fracture propagation and fracture *** the simulations,the sequential fracturing and alternating fracturing can dramatically decrease the limitation on fracture propagation caused by "stress shadow",the total fracture length increased by 20.6% and 26.1% compared with simultaneous *** fracture aperture also affected by the fracture *** simulation results demonstrates that the alternating fracturing is an effective method to prevent the fracture width reduction caused by squeezing effect,which can effectively improve the well *** simulations are useful for horizontal wellbore stimulation design to acquire the desired fracture lengths,fracture conductivity and production rates.
