AutoGDeterm： Automatic Geometry Determination for Electron Tomography

Electron Tomography （ET） is an important method for studying cell ultrastructure in three-dimensional （3D） space. By combining cryo-electron tomography of frozen-hydrated samples （cryo-ET） and a sub-tomogram averaging approach, ET has recently reached sub-nanometer resolution, thereby realizing the capability for gaining direct insights into function and mechanism. To obtain a high-resolution 3D ET reconstruction, alignment and geometry determination of the ET tilt series are necessary. However, typical methods for determining geometry require human intervention, which is not only subjective and easily introduces errors, but is also labor intensive for high-throughput tomographic reconstructions. To overcome these problems, we have developed an automatic geometry-determination method, called AutoGDeterm. By taking advantage of the high-contrast re-projections of the Iterative Compressed-sensing Optimized Non-Uniform Fast Fourier Transform （NUFFT） reconstruction （ICON） and a series of numerical analysis methods, AutoGDeterm achieves high-precision fully automated geometry determination. Experimental results on simulated and resin-embedded datasets show that the accuracy of AutoGDeterm is high and comparable to that of the typical ＂manual positioning＂ method. We have made AutoGDeterm available as software, which can be freely downloaded from our website http：//***.

Morphodynamic response of an embayed beach to different typhoon events with varying intensities

Beach erosion has occurred globally in recent decades due to frequent and severe *** beach,located in Zhujiajian Island,Zhejiang Province,China,is a typical embayed sandy *** study focused on the morphodynamic response of Dongsha beach to typhoon events,based on beach topographies and surficial sediment characteristics acquired before and after four typhoon events with varying *** four typhoons had different effects on the topography and sediment characteristics of Dongsha *** Ampil and Danas caused the largest(-51.72 m3/m)and the smallest erosion(-8.01 m3/m),*** alongshore patterns of beach profile volumetric changes were found after the four typhoon events,with more erosion in the southern and central parts of the beach and few changes in the northern *** size coarsening and poor sorting were the main sediment patterns on the beach influenced by different *** that occurred in the same year after another typhoon enhanced the effect of the previous typhoon on sediment coarsening and sorting variability,but this cumulative effect was not found between typhoons that occurred during different years.A comparison of the collected data revealed that the topographic state of the beach before the typhoon,typhoon characteristics,and tidal conditions were possible reasons for the difference in the responses of Dongsha beach to typhoon *** severe beach erosion was caused by typhoons with higher intensity levels and longer durations,and high tide levels during typhoons can determine the upper limit of the beach profile erosion *** together,these results can be used to improve beach management for storm prevention.

Revisiting Sustainable Development of Dry Valleys in Hengduan Mountains Region

Dry valleys are a striking geographic landscape in Hengduan Mountains Region and are characterized by low rainfall, desert type of vegetation and fragile environment. Past efforts and resources have been concentrated mainly on rehabilitation of degraded ecosystem and fragile environment, particularly reforestation, while socio-economic development has been largely overlooked. Despite successes in pocket areas, the overall trend of unsustainability and environmental deterioration are continuing. It is important to understand that uplift of the Tibetan Plateau is the root cause of development of dry valleys, and development and formation of dry valleys is a natural process. human intervention has played a secondary role in development of dry valleys and degradation of dry valleys though human intervention in many cases has speeded up environmental degradation of the dry valleys. It is important to understand that dry valleys are climatic enclaves and an integrated approach that combines rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems and socio-economic development should be adopted if the overall goal of sustainable development of dry valleys is to be achieved. Promotion of niche-based cash crops, rural energy including hydropower, solar energy, biogas and fuelwood plantation is recommended as the priority activities.

Effect of a 12-Week Dietary intervention with Folic Acid or Folate-Enhanced Foods on Folate Status in Healthy Egyptian Women

The Egyptian government introduced wheat-flour fortification with iron and folic acid to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects, but suspended it for technical reasons. We previously developed novel legume foods with enhanced folate content. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of 12-week intervention with folate-enhanced foods versus folic acid supplement in improving folate status in Egyptian women. A randomized, parallel intervention trial with two active groups (n = 19, n = 18) and one blinded control group (n = 20) was executed over 12 weeks. Volunteers received either germinated legume foods and orange juice (≈250 μg/d folate) or folic acid supplement (500 μg/d) or apple juice (0 μg/d folate). Folate status was assessed by erythrocyte and plasma folate and total homocysteine (tHcy) at day 0, and after 8 and 12 weeks of intervention. After 12 weeks, mean plasma folate increased by 14 (P intervention. Folate-enhanced foods effectively improve folate status in women of reproductive age. These foods could be used as a complement to folic acid fortification.
