To understand the distribution of phytoplankton functional groups(PFGs)and key factors on their compositions in different watersheds of the huanghe(Yellow)river basin,25 river sites and 25 lake-reservoirs sites were *** contents of nephelometric turbidity(NTU),total nitrogen(TN),and total phosphorus(TP)were significantly higher in rivers than that in lakes or reservoirs,whereas the pH and CODMn(chemical oxygen demand or potassium permanganate index)were *** show that,27 PFGs,namely,assemblages A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,J,K,LM,Lo,M,MP,N,P,S1,S2,T,TC,W1,W2,X1,X2,X3,XPh,and Y,were ***,ANOSIM correlation analysis demonstrated significant differences in PFG composition between the riverine and lake-reservoir sections in the huanghe river *** the riverine watersheds,the group MP was dominant,while assemblages B and J were prevalent in lakes and *** Mantel correlation tests and RDA analysis showed that environmental variables,such as NTU,water temperature(WT),conductivity(Cond),and TP,were key driving factors of shaping the dominant PFGs of the study *** the Venn diagram based on variation partitioning analysis,PFGs were mainly influenced by WT and TP in lake-reservoir sites,while in the river sites were affected mainly by geo-climatic *** study helps understanding the PFGs in river ecosystems,and unraveling the key driving factors in different watersheds,which shall be important for the protection and management of entire huanghe river basin.

Based on the data from gauging stations, the changes in water discharge and sediment load of the huanghe （Yellow） river were analyzed by using the empirical mode decomposition （EMD） method. The results show that the periodic oscillation of water discharge and sediment load of the huanghe river occurs at the interannual, decadal, and multi-decadal scales, caused by the periodic oscillations of precipitation, and E1 Nifio/Southern Oscillation （ENSO） af- fects water discharge by influencing precipitation distribution and contributes to periodic varations in precipitation and water discharge at interannual timescale. The water discharge and sediment load of the huanghe river have decreased since the 1960s under the influence of precipitation and huamn activities, and human activities attribute more than precipitation to the reduction in the water discharge and sediment load, furthermore, water abstraction and water-soil conservation practices are the main causes of the decrease in water discharge and sediment load, respectively. The reduction in sediment load has directly impacted on the lower reaches of the huanghe river and the river delta, causing considerable erosion of the river channel in the lower reaches since the 1970s along with river Delta changing siltation into erosion around 2000.

Dissolved nutrient concentration in the huanghe （Yellow） river at Lijin was monitored during a water-sediment regulation period and a subsequent rainstorm from 14 June to 19 July, 2005. This study provides detailed information on nutrient concentrations in the huanghe river during the water-sediment regulation and rainstorm periods, and is of significance for the downstream area of the huanghe river and the Bohai Sea. The average concentrations of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia were 304.7 μmol/L, 0.19 μmol/L, and 1.10 μmol/L, respectively, while the average concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus （DIP） and dissolved silicate （DSi） were 0.23 gmol/L and 122.9 ktmol/L, respectively. Nutrient concentrations during the water-sediment regulation period were mainly influenced by the dilution effect, floodplain effect and sediment resuspension while dilution and erosion effects were the main factors during the rainstorm. The fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen （DIN）, DIP and DSi during the water-sediment regulation and rainstorm periods accounted for 20.4%, 19.5%, 16.7% and 4.97%, 6.45%, 5.47% of the annual nutrient fluxes, respectively. Discharge was the main factor influencing the fluxes of nutrients during both the water- sediment regulation and the rainstorm periods.

There are two different opinions on the formation history of huanghe (Yellow) river. One postulates that huanghe river might have come into existence before Tertiary. The other supposes that it joined up into a long river only in the last stage of Late Pleistocene. The appearance of huanghe river is believed to have close relation to the uplifting of Tibetan Plateau. It is not likely that it could have come into being before its high elevation riverhead was formed. Today huanghe river occurred probably during the recession of the sea in glacial periods. In the last glacial age, the climate was very harsh in the area north of the modern estuary of Changjiang (Yangtse) river; some areas were permafrost and the others barren deserts. At that time, eolation was the major exogenic force on exposed shelf. Beginning from 12 Ka BP, the global climate warmed up, resulting in gradual disappearance of continental mountain glaciers retreated, and sea level rose. Consequently, huanghe river was replenished with water to become modern river system. With continued rising of sea level, huanghe river delta moved continuously eastward.
