In eukaryotic cells, gene activity is not directly reflected by protein levels because mRNA processing, transport, stability, and translation are co- and post-transcriptionally regulated. These processes, collectively known as the ribonome, are tightly controlled and carried out by a plethora of trans-acting RNA-binding proteins （RBPs） that bind to specific cis elements throughout the RNA sequence. Within the nervous system, the role of RBPs in brain function turns out to be essential due to the architectural complexity of neurons exemplified by a relatively small somal size and an extensive network of projections and connections, Thus far, RBPs have been shown to be indispensable for several aspects of neurogenesis, neurite outgrowth, synapse formation, and plasticity. Consequently, perturbation of their function is central in the etiology of an ever-growing spectrum of neurological diseases, including fragile X syndrome and the neurodegenerative disorders frontotemporal lobar degeneration and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Analyzing Population Density Disparity in China with GIS-automated Regionalization: The hu Line Revisited

The famous ’hu Line’, proposed by hu huanyong in 1935, divided China into two regions(southeast and northwest) of comparable area size but drastically different in population. However, the classic hu Line was derived manually in absence of reliable census data and computational technologies of modern days. It has been subject to criticism of lack of scientific rigor and accuracy. This research uses a GIS-automated regionalization method, termed REDCAP(Regionalization with Dynamically Constrained Agglomerative Clustering and Partitioning), to reconstruct the demarcation line based on the 2010 county-level census data in China. The results show that the logarithmic transformation of population density is a better measure of attributive homogeneity in derived regions than density itself, and produces two regions of nearly identical area size and greater contrast in population. Specifically, the revised hu Line by hu huanyong in 1990 had the southeast region with 94.4% of total population and 42.9% of total land, and our delineation line yields a southeast region with 97.4% population and 50.8% land. Therefore, the population density ratio of the two regions is 27.1 by our line, much higher than the ratio of 22.4 by the hu Line, and thus outperforms the hu Line in deriving regions of maximum density contrast with comparable area size. Furthermore, more regions are delineated to further advance our understanding of population distribution disparity in China.

羟基脲(hu)在PUREX流程可作为还原剂和配位剂,其与乏燃料溶解液中重要裂片元素Zr(Ⅳ)的配位作用可提高PUREX流程对Zr的净化水平。本工作对硝酸体系中Zr(Ⅳ)与hu的配位作用进行了初步研究。通过等摩尔连续变化法(又称Job’s法)得到0.3 mol/L HNO_(3)下,Zr(Ⅳ)和hu的配位摩尔比为1∶8,结合半整数法算出Zr(Ⅳ)-hu的表观稳定常数为lg K_(1)≈1.59、lg K_(2)≈1.75、lg K_(3)≈1.88、lg K_(4)≈1.98、lg K_(5)≈2.09、lg K_(6)≈2.27、lg K_(7)≈2.51、lg K_(8)≈3.01。1.0 mol/L HNO_(3)下,Zr(Ⅳ)和hu配位摩尔比为1∶4,表观稳定常数为lg K_(1)≈2.33、lg K_(2)≈2.51、lg K_(3)≈2.78、lg K_(4)≈3.31。3.0 mol/L HNO_(3)下,Zr(Ⅳ)和hu配位摩尔比为1∶2,表观稳定常数为lg K_(1)≈2.69、lg K_(2)≈2.79。

针对无人机视觉着舰相对导航合作目标检测易受环境干扰问题,提出了一种面向近红外合作目标的鲁棒检测与匹配算法。首先,搭建了由850nm的近红外合作目标以及带有850nm滤镜摄像头组成的成像系统;然后,设计了基于几何约束的方法剔除合作目标图像中的异形干扰点,再利用hu矩排除其中的相似干扰点;最后,利用形状上下文匹配算法解决拍摄图像中合作目标可能存在尺度、角度畸变使得合作目标难以匹配问题。实验结果表明,所提出的方法可以在不同距离、不同光照、不同角度以及环境干扰下,实现合作目标鲁棒检测与匹配。

Can Helicobacter pylori infection influence human reproduction?

Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)infection could be associated with extra-digestive diseases.Here,we report the evidences concerning the decrease in reproductive potential occurring in individuals infected by H.pylori,especially by strains expressing CagA.This infection is more prevalent in individuals with fertility disorders.Infected women have anti-H.pylori antibodies in cervical mucus and follicular fluid that may decrease sperm motility and cross react immunologically with spermatozoa,conceivably hampering the oocyte/sperm fusion.Infection by CagA positive organisms enhances the risk of preeclampsia,which is a main cause of foetus death.These findings are supported by the results of experimental infections of pregnant mice,which may cause reabsorption of a high number of foetuses and alter the balance between Th1 and Th2 cell response.Infected men have decreased sperm motility,viability and numbers of normally shaped sperm and augmented systemic levels of inflammatory cytokines,such as TNF-α,which may damage spermatozoa.In countries where parasitic infestation is endemic,detrimental effects of infection upon spermatozoa may not occur,because the immune response to parasites could determine a switch from a predominant Th1 type to Th2 type lymphocytes,with production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.In conclusion,the evidences gathered until now should be taken into consideration for future studies aiming to explore the possible role of H.pylori infection on human reproduction.

This study uses six censuses (1953,1964,1982,1990,2000,and 2010) at the county level since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China to examine the changes of population density pattern in China's Mainland over time.Based on the Gini coefficient,the change of disparity in population density followed a “U-shaped” trend,i.e.,decreasing during 1953–1982 and increasing during 1982–2010.The shrinking disparity in the pre-reform periods was largely attributable to various ill-conceived political movements,and the enlarging gap in population growth rates in the post-reform era reflected a natural outcome of urbanization,which will continue in the foreseeable future.In addition,this research employs a GIS-automated regionalization method,REDCAP,to uncover a natural demarcation line like the classic “hu Line” that divides China into two regions of similar area sizes but a strong contrast in population.The results show that the regionalization-derived lines were largely consistent with the hu Line over time.Therefore,the disparity between the high-density southeast and low-density northwest regions is likely due to differing physical environments that form a natural barrier.Any public policy to overcome this barrier at a large scale is destined to be a vain attempt.
