Making Sense of Interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum Design: Case Study of Common Core Curriculum at the University of Hong Kong

Purpose:This research is an interview-based study that captures the academics’perspectives toward the planning and design of an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum for undergraduate students in the Chinese context,using the Common Core Curriculum at the University of Hong Kong as a case study.Design/Approach/Methods:A total of 28 academics with various levels of academic ranking,disciplinary context,proven teaching excellence,and research productivities were individually invited for and consented to a semi-structured and face-to-face interview.Findings:This article suggests four fundamental and interrelated dimensions for consideration when structuring an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum,namely,how to design,what is worth learning,how to learn and teach,and how to know students have learned.It is suggested that the ideal curriculum should remain coherent and coordinated,broad and balanced,as well as open and flexible,ensuring the capture of knowledge,skills,and attitudes,with the facilitation of active,authentic,and contextualized pedagogies and assessments.Originality/Value:This article has the potential of providing insight for policymakers and educators around the world to better structure an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum by creating an overall springboard for future discussion.They can also integrate these evidence-based elements and strategies into their everyday practices.

A clinical pathway for integrative medicine in the treatment of functional constipation in Hong Kong,China

Objective:Functional constipation(FC)is a common intestinal disease worldwide.Despite the presence of criteria such as Roman IV,there is no standardized diagnosis and treatment algorithm in Hong Kong that combines both Western and Chinese medicine approaches.This study integrates current effective and safe diagnosis and treatment methods for FC and provides a clear and scientific pathway for clinical professionals and patients.Methods:A systematic search of the PubMed,Cochrane Library,and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases was performed from their inception to June 30th,2022,collecting the current evidence about the efficacious integrative management for FC.We organized a meeting of professionals in fields relevant to treatment and management of FC to develop a consensus agreement on clinical pathway process.Results:We developed a clinical pathway for the treatment of FC based on the most recent published guidelines and consultation with experts.This pathway includes a hierarchy of recommendations for every step of the clinical process,including clinical intake,diagnostic examination,recommended labs,diagnostic flowchart,and guidance for selection of therapeutic drugs.Conclusion:This pathway establishes clinical standards for the diagnosis and treatment of FC using Chinese medicine and Western medicine;it will help to provide high-quality medical services in Hong Kong for patients with FC.

This study reformulates the concept and contents of disaster risk reduction(DRR) in Hong Kong through an explorative study on collaborative place audit(CPA) and social vulnerability index(SVI) for elders.We believe that DRR should be place-and age-responsive.Accordingly,DRR needs to go beyond technical concerns and address vulnerability and risk encountered in the built environment where an individual is located.A place-centered DRR begins with an assessment of person–environment relations from an interdependent perspective.Community becomes a significant scale at which to address vulnerability and risks across a range of environmental,socioeconomic,and institutional factors.A CPA is a ground-level assessment tool that identifies vulnerability and risk in the built and social environment.The audit encourages collaboration in problem solving that uses social capital to effect decisionmaking change in hierarchies and policy networks.Ageresponsive DRR facilitates distinguishing living-alone elders from the general population.This perspective addresses varying degrees of vulnerability due to social and communicational isolation,poverty,disability,being sent to hospital and/or receiving institutional care,as well as lack of access to primary care.Accordingly,SVI,based oncompound indicators,is developed to assess the differentiation of vulnerability across the territory with particular reference to the elders.These two approaches,namely,CPA and SVI,build community capacity to develop a resilient city,as well as to provide evidence-based recommendations that improve government-led disaster preparedness and contingency plans.

The Geological Significance of a Tuffite Interlayer in the Cretaceous Port Island Formation in Northeastern Hong Kong

The Port Island Formation(PIF), a typical Cretaceous red bed in Hong Kong, is dominated by non-fossiliferous, reddish clastic rocks, making it difficult to determine the sedimentary age of PIF precisely. Previous studies assigned the PIF to Late Cretaceous provisionally only on the basis of its stratigraphic sequence and lithology. This study identified a tuffite interlayer in the PIF and a zircon UPb age of 128.2±2.7 Ma by LA-ICP-MS method was obtained. It’s the first time to date the depositional age of the PIF with a reliable chronological constraint. With the support of stratigraphic evidence, we concluded that the geological age of PIF should be Early Cretaceous rather than Late Cretaceous. Based on the volcanic history of Hong Kong and Southeast China and the distribution of the PIF in Mirs Bay, it is believed that there was no volcanic activity in Hong Kong in ca. 128 Ma. The tuffite interlayer discovered in PIF was formed by the deposition of volcanic ash, which might originate from remote region outside Hong Kong, in an aquatic environment on Port Island. The identification of the tuffite interlayer, as the response to a volcanic event, has great significance not only to the studies of establishment and regional correlation of the strata system and the geological evolution in Hong Kong,but also to the study of volcanic activities in Southeast China.

Intraseasonal Variation of Visibility in Hong Kong

Visibility is one of the parameters for indicating air pollution. In this study, visibility variation in Hong Kong during summer and winter is investigated. Visibility in Hong Kong has clear intraseasonai variation. Examination of different environmental parameters suggests that the intraseasonal component dominates the overall circulation anomalies in both summer and winter. Associated with the intraseasonal variation of environmental parameters, obvious variation in visibility impair- ment is found in both summer and winter. In summer, local visibility and air quality are found to be significantly affected by the （MJO） and the 10-30-day intraseasonal oscillation （ISO） through modulation of associated atmospheric circulations. In winter, the modulation effects appear to be weaker due to the southward shift of the associated convection. The results in this study highlight the importance of the ISO in contributing to the overall variation in visibility in Hong Kong, and provide useful implications for the development of possible mitigation strategies associated with visibility impairment and air pollution in Hong Kong.

Twenty-four-hour PM2.5 and PM10 samples were collected simultaneously at a highly trafficked road-side site in Hong Kong every sixth day from October 2004 to September 2005. The mass concentrations of PM2.5, PMlo-2.5 （defined as PM10 - PM2.5）, organic carbon （OC）, elemental carbon （EC）, water-soluble ions, and up to 25 elements were determined. Investigation of the chemical compositions and potential sources revealed distinct differences between PM2.5 and PM10-2.5. The annual average mass concentrations were 55.5 ＋ 25.5 and 25.9±15.7μg/m^3 for PM2.5 and PM10-2.5, respectively. EC, OM （OM = OC × 1.4）, and ammonium sulfate comprised over -82% of PM2.5, accounting for -29%, -27%, and -25%, respectively, of the PM2.5 mass. Low OC/EC ratios （less than 1） for PM2.5 suggested that fresh diesel-engine exhaust was a major contributor. Seven sources were resolved for PM2.5 by positive matrix factorization （PMF） model, including vehicle emissions （-29%）, secondary inorganic aerosols （-27%）, waste incinera- tor/biomass burning （-23%）, residual oil combustion （-10%）, marine aerosols （-6%）, industrial exhaust （-4%）, and resuspended road dust （-1%）. EC and OM comprised only -19% of PM10-2.5. The average OC/EC ratio of PM10-2.5 was 7.8± 14.2, suggesting that sources other than vehicular exhaust were important contributors. The sources for PM10-2.5 determined by the PMF model included -20% traffic-generated resuspension （e.g., tire dust/brake linear/petrol evaporation）, -17% locally resuspended road dust, -17% marine aerosols, -12% secondary aerosols/field burning, and -11% vehicle emissions.

We used the geological map and published rock density measurements to compile the digital rock density model for the Hong Kong territories.We then estimated the average density for the whole territory.According to our result,the rock density values in Hong Kong vary from 2101 to 2681 kg·m^(-3).These density values are typically smaller than the average density of 2670 kg·m^(-3),often adopted to represent the average density of the upper continental crust in physical geodesy and gravimetric geophysics applications.This finding reflects that the geological configuration in Hong Kong is mainly formed by light volcanic formations and lava flows with overlying sedimentary deposits at many locations,while the percentage of heavier metamorphic rocks is very low(less than 1%).This product will improve the accuracy of a detailed geoid model and orthometric heights.

The special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao enjoy a high degree of autonomy from the national policy system in devising their local policies,including measures related to climate change.Hong Kong and Macao each have their own climate change policies,some aspects of which are more advanced than policies in China's Mainland.While their high degree of policy autonomy has advantages,this has also isolated them from China's larger environmental management and practices that continue to advance at scale.This paper reviews the climate change policies of the two special administrative regions and analyzes their strengths and innovations,particularly in adaptation.It also identifies areas where there could be closer engagement,collaboration,and capacity-building with the China's Mainland,which has the potential for greater positive impacts,especially on a regional basis.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong on September 16,2018,necessitating the issuance of the highest tropical cyclone warning signal,No.10 Hurricane Signal.Packing ferocious winds and record-breaking storm surge,Mangkhut brought the most serious and widespread destruction to the territory in the recent three decades.A series of post event information search,field visits and damage surveys has been conducted by the Hong Kong Observatory(HKO)and the findings on the damages and impacts caused by Mangkhut in different parts of the territory are documented in this paper.Moreover,by analyzing the economic loss data reported by various government departments,public utilities and organizations in Hong Kong and the statistics on insurance claims from the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers(HKFI),the estimated direct economic loss due to Mangkhut in Hong Kong is about HK$4.60 billion,which is about 3.8 times to that of Super Typhoon Hato in 2017.On the contrary,in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,the estimated direct economic loss due to Hato is significantly higher than that of Mangkhut.This could be attributed to the early and effective warnings for Mangkhut,increased public awareness and typhoon preparedness for Mangkhut in 2018 since the fierce attack of Hato in 2017,and infrastructure enhancement of the major impact areas.
