This paper establishes two sample databases: a full sample database and a small sample database through data organization and selection on the basis of the application materials of the first Chinese Historic conservation areas. Adopting both quantitative and qualitative analytical research methodologies, the paper obtains the status quo of Chinese Historic conservation areas and the recently designated Historic conservation areas. Based on the data analysis and the overall survey of Chinese Historic cities in 2011, it proposes countermeasures for improving the protection of Historic conservation areas in the future.

The early Historic and cultural heritage protection is regarded as the responsibility of the government, and is promoted by the government, protection experts, planners, and a few other elites. These bodies constitute a top-down Historic and cultural heritage protection system based on their cultural consciousness. In the social transition of market-oriented reform and property right reform, due to the profit-driven demands of individuals, enterprise, and development-oriented government, the protection system was gradually differentiated and a lot of "protective development" practices emerged. With the advent of the post-industrial era, based on the need for cultural identity, the Historic and cultural heritage protection began to get attention from third-party organizations, community residents, and even the public, who launched "bottom-up" social participation. Therefore, this paper, based on social governance theory, takes the development of civil cultural conservation organizations in Guangdong as the research object, explores how to construct a society participation network in Guangdong, and discusses the influence and limitation of the network in promoting the Historic and cultural heritage protection. The paper puts forward the idea of improving the system of Historic and cultural heritage protection through social participation.

Turkey is a country that is vulnerable to earthquakes and has experienced many major earthquakes that completely destroyed or caused significant damage to numerous Historic structures. Today, using computer software, it is important to numerically model and analyze Historic structures that need significant restoration and strengthening, to evaluate them from a perspective of seismic resistance, and to reinforce them without altering their originality. In this study, a finite element model of the Historic Tigris Bridge on the Tigris River was created. First, the stresses and deformation caused by its own weight were determined. Subsequently, dynamic analyses were performed in the time domain using past earthquake ground motion records. Displacement and stress values obtained for each earthquake record in these time domain analysis were compared to each other to evaluate the seismic behavior of the bridge comparatively. The seismic performance of the bridge was determined on the basis of the “Guidelines on the Management of Earthquake Risks for Historic Structures” published by the Directorate General of Religious Foundations in Turkey.

Within the framework of disaster risk management, this article proposes an interdisciplinary method for the analysis of multiple natural hazards, including climate change’s influences, in the context of cultural heritage. A taxonomy of natural hazards applicable to cultural heritage was developed based on the existing theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Sudden-onset hazards, such as earthquakes and floods, and slow-onset hazards, such as wetting–drying cycles and biological contamination, were incorporated into the hazard assessment procedure. Future alteration of conditions due to climate change, such as change in heat waves’ duration, was also taken into account. The proposed hazard assessment framework was applied to the case of the Historic Centre of Rethymno, a city on the northern coast of the island of Crete in Greece,to identify, analyze, and prioritize the hazards that have the potential to cause damage to the center’s Historic structures. The assessment procedure includes climate model projections, GIS spatial modeling and mapping, and finally a hazard analysis matrix to enable the sharing of a better understanding of multiple hazards with the stakeholders.The results can facilitate decision making by providing the vulnerability and risk analysis with the nature and spatial distribution of the significant hazards within the study area and its setting.

The display and utilization of Historic culture are one of the ways for towns to manifest characteristics, carry forward traditions, and promote competitiveness. As the important part of urban conservation planning, it is also a hot point in the theoretical research on the Historic town protection in China. The "context" of towns refers to the essential connection between human being, natural environment, built environment, and social cultural background in the course of Historical development and specific conditions. From the perspective of context, this paper put forward construction strategies for the display and utilization system of Historic culture combined with the current situation of Historical protection of small towns. Historical changes and contextual elements were analyzed based on the literature research and field investigation of Luojiang District to carry out the design of Historical and cultural display structures, tour routes, and presentation modes.
