Geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology, and hf isotopes of S-type granite in the Baoshan block, constraints on the age and evolution of the Proto-Tethys

Geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology, and hf isotope data for the Early Paleozoic granites in the Baoshan Block reveal the Early Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Proto-Tethys. The samples are high-K, calcalkaline, strongly peraluminous rocks with A/CNK values of 1.37–1.46, are enriched in SiO2, K2O, and Rb, and are depleted in Nb, P, Ti, Eu, and heavy rare earth elements,which indicates the crystallization fractionation of the granitic magma. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that they formed in ca. 480 Ma. The Nansa granites have εhf(t) values ranging from-16.04 to 4.36 with corresponding TC DMages of 2.10–0.81 Ga, which suggests the magmas derived from the partial melting of ancient metasedimentary with minor involvement of mantle-derived components. A synthesis of data for the Early Paleozoic igneous rocks in the Baoshan block and adjacent(Tengchong,Qiangtang, Sibumasu, Himalaya, etc.) blocks indicates that these blocks were all aligned along the proto-Tethyan margin of East Gondwana in the Early Paleozoic. The Early Paleozoic S-type granites from Nansa were generated in a high-temperature and low-pressure(HTLP) extensional tectonic setting, which resulted from Andean-type orogeny instead of the final assembly of Gondwana or crustal extension in a non-arc environment. In certain places, an expanding environment may exist in opposition to the tectonic backdrop of the lithosphere’s thickening and shortening, leading the crust to melt and decompress,mantle-derived materials to mix, and a small quantity of peraluminous granite to emerge.

Petrogenesis and Tectonic Significance of Shenxianshui Alkaline Granite in Gejiu,Yunnan Province,China

The Shenxianshui granites in the western Gejiu area were formed in the Late Cretaceous.Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry indicates zircon U-Pb ages ranging from 90.67±0.7 to 85.97±0.6 Ma.The intrusive rocks are peraluminous(A/CNK=1.03 to 1.33)and calc-alkaline,showing an affinity towards I-type granite.Large ion lithophilic elements are enriched in K and Rb,while high field strength elements are depleted.Moreover,light rare earth elements are significantly enriched,showing a slight negative Eu anomaly(Eu/Eu^(*)=0.39 to 0.58).Shenxianshui granite has a relatively high initial Sr isotope ratio(^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr)_(i)(0.7098-0.7105),negative ε_(Nd)(t)values(−7.99 to−7.44)and negative ε_(hf)(t)values(−8.37 to−2.58).Combined with previous studies,these characteristics suggest that the Shenxianshui alkaline granites were formed in a post-collision extensional environment.The alkaline granitic magma possibly originated from the partial melting of the lower crust during the Mesoproterozoic era and may have contained mantle source materials.Shenxianshui alkaline granite was formed from mixed magma with a high degree of crystal differentiation.The abundance of ore-forming elements indicates that Shenxianshui granite has the potential to mineralize key metals and rare earth elements.

U-Pb Ages and hf isotope of Zircons from a Carbonatite Dyke in the Bayan Obo Fe-REE Deposit in Inner Mongolia: its Geological Significance

Detailed studies on U-Pb ages and hf isotope have been carried out in zircons from a carbonatite dyke associated with the Bayan Obo giant REE-Nb-Fe deposit,northern margin of the North China Craton(NCC),which provide insights into the plate tectonic in Paleoproterozoic.Analyses of small amounts of zircons extracted from a large sample of the Wu carbonatite dyke have yielded two ages of late Archaean and late Paleoproterozoic(with mean 207 Pb/206 Pb ages of 2521±25 Ma and 1921±14 Ma,respectively).Mineral inclusions in the zircon identified by Raman spectroscopy are all silicate minerals,and none of the zircon grains has the extremely high Th/U characteristic of carbonatite,which are consistent with crystallization of the zircon from silicate,and the zircon is suggested to be derived from trapped basement complex.hf isotopes in the zircon from the studied carbonatite are different from grain to grain,suggesting the zircons were not all formed in one single process.Majority ofεhf(t)values are compatible with ancient crustal sources with limited juvenile component.The hf data and their TDM2 values also suggest a juvenile continental growth in Paleoproterozoic during the period of 1940–1957 Ma.Our data demonstrate the major crustal growth during the Paleoproterozoic in the northern margin of the NCC,coeval with the assembly of the supercontinent Columbia,and provide insights into the plate tectonic of the NCC in Paleoproterozoic.

Geochronology and hf isotope Study of Pegmatite in the Xiaoqinling Area of NW China: Implication for Petrogenesis and Regional Metamorphism

In this study, we carried out petrography, zircon U-Pb geochronology and hf isotopic analyses on a granitic pegmatite dyke in the Xiaoqinling area in southern margin of the North China Craton（NCC）. Our study suggests that the pegmatite dyke likely crystallized from a volatile-rich pegmatitic magma. Different from most other pegmatite elsewhere, zircon from this pegmatite dyke does not contain unusually high U and Th concentrations and suffered no evident radioactive damage, therefore we successfully obtained a zircon U-Pb dating using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry（LA-ICP-MS）, which yields an average 207Pb/206 Pb age of 1 814±6 Ma, representing the intrusive age of the granitic pegmatite dyke. Zircon εhf（t） values are between-8.3 and-3.0, corresponding to hf depleted mantle model ages from 2 649 to 2 991 Ma with an average of 2 881 Ma. These data indicate that this granitic pegmatite dyke may have been derived from partial melting of Meso-Neoarchean metamorphic rocks from the Xiaoqinling basement. Granitic pegmatite magma may have emplaced within the Taihua Group wall rocks during the last stage of the middle to high grade metamorphism. Furthermore, according to the petrographic observation, the 1.81 Ga pegmatite dyke and the 1 800–1 750 Ma Xiong’er Group rocks were not undergone middle to high grade metamorphism, indicating 1.81 Ga as the termination of the latest regional metamorphism in the southern margin of the NCC.

Zircon U–Pb and hf isotope data integrated in this study for magmatic and metamorphic rocks fromthe Hida Belt,southwest Japan,lead to a new understanding of the evolution of the Cordilleran arc system along the ancestral margins of present-day Northeast Asia.Ion microprobe data for magmatic zircon domains from eight mafic tointermediate orthogneisses in the Tateyama and Tsunogawa areas yielded weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages spanning the entire Permian period(302–254 Ma).Under cathodoluminescence,primary magmatic growth zones in the zircon crystals were observed to be partially or completely replaced by inward-penetrating,irregularly curved featureless or weakly zoned secondary domains that mostly yielded U–Pb ages of 250–240 Ma and relatively high Th/U ratios(>0.2).These secondary domains are considered to have been formed by solid-state recrystallization during thermal overprints associated with intrusions of Hida granitoids.Available whole-rock geochemical and Sr–Nd isotope data as well as zircon age spectra corroborate that the Hida Belt comprises the Paleozoic–Mesozoic Cordilleran arc system built upon the margin of the North China Craton,together with the YeongnamMassif in southern Korea.The arcmagmatismalong this systemwas commenced in the Carboniferous and culminated in the Permian–Triassic transition period.Highly positiveεhf(t)values(>+12)of late Carboniferous to early Permian detrital zircons in the Hida paragneisses indicate that there was significant input from the depleted asthenospheric mantle and/or its crustal derivatives in the early stage of arc magmatism.On the other hand,near-chondriticεhf(t)values(+5 to−2)of magmatic zircons from late Permian Hida orthogneisses suggest a lithospheric mantle origin.hf isotopic differences between magmatic zircon cores and the secondary rims observed in some orthogneiss samples clearly indicate that the zircons were chemically open to fluids or melts during thermal overprints.Resumed highly positive zirconεhf(t)values(>+9)shared by Early Jurassic granitoids in t

Neoarchean(2.5-2.8 Ga) crustal growth of the North China Craton revealed by zircon hf isotope:A synthesis

The crustal growth of the North China Craton （NCC） during the Neoarchean time （2.5--2.8 Ga） is a hotly controversial topic, with some proposing that the main crustal growth occurred in the late Neoarch- ean （2.5--2.6 Ga）, in agreement with the time of the magmatism, whereas others suggest that the main crustal accretion took place during early Neoarchean time （2.7-2.8 Ga）, consistent with the time of crustal- formation of other cratons in the world. Zircon U-Pb ages and hf isotope compositions can provide rigorous constraints on the time of crustal growth and the evolution and tectonic division of the NCC. In this contri- bution, we make a comprehensive review of zircon hf isotope data in combination with zircon U-Pb geochro- nology and some geochemistry data from various divisions of the NCC with an aim to constrain the Neoarchean crustal growth of the NCC. The results suggest that both 2.7--2.8 Ga and 2.5-2.6 Ga crustal growth are distributed over the NCC and the former is much wider than previously suggested. The Eastern block is characterized by the main 2.7-2.8 Ga crustal growth with local new crustal-formation at 2.5-2.6 Ga, and the Yinshan block is characterized by ~2.7 Ga crustal accretion as revealed by hf-isotope data of detrital zircons from the Zhaertai Group. Detrital zircon data of the Khondalite Belt indi- cate that the main crustal growth period of the Western block is Paleoproterozoic involving some ~ 2.6 Ga and minor Early- to Middle-Archean crustal components, and the crustal accretion in the Trans-North China Orogen （TNCO） has a wide age range from 2.5 Ga to 2.9 Ga with a notable regional discrepancy. Zircon hf isotope compositions, coupled with zircon ages and other geochemical data suggest that the southern margin may not be an extension of the TNCO, and the evolution and tectonic division of the NCC is more complex than previously proposed, probably involving multi-stage crustal growth and subduction processes. Petrogenesis and tectonic implications of Late Triassic granitoids in the Alananshan,East Kunlun belt:evidence from geochemistry,geochronology,and zircon hf isotopic compositions

The Qimantag in the East Kunlun Orogenic Belt has widespread Triassic magmatic rocks that have received scant attention,with an unresolved issue relating to its petrogenesis and geodynamics.In this paper,we used zircon U-Pb-hf isotopes and whole-rock geochemistry to trace the petrogenesis and tectonic settings of the moyite and monzogranite from the Qimantag Alananshan,East Kunlun.The moyite and monzogranite are silicic(SiO_(2-)~69.9-76.41%),highly alkali(Na_(2)O+K_(2)O~7.29 to8.96 wt.%),with Mg^(#)about 10.4-30.34,indicative of a high-K calc-alkaline rock series.The rare earth element patterns diagram is right-leaning,with a negative Eu anomaly(δEu=0.31-0.68).They are enriched in Rb,K,and light rare earth elements but depleted in Nb,Ta,and Ti,with abundant amphibole,typical of I-type granites.U-Pb on zircon constrained the emplacement of the moyite at 223.9±2.6 Ma and monzogranite at 226.9±2.9 Ma.Theεhf(t)values range from-2.8 to+0.1 except for one outlier value of-7.0,corresponding two-stage model age of 1249-1437 Ma.Our combined geochemical and isotopic results indicate that the moyite and monzogranite were derived from partial melting of the lower thicken crust with the contribution from the older basement materials.These rocks formed in a post-collision setting that is transitional between compressive collision and extension orogeny.

Detrital Zircon Geochronology and Provenance of Metasedimentary Rocks from the Susong Complex Zone in the Dabie Orogen

The Susong complex zone is a relatively low-grade metamorphic unit located in the southern part of the Dabie orogen and preserves a variety of metasedimentary rocks,mostly with epidote-amphibolite facies.However,their depositional age,provenance and tectonic setting of sedimentary protolith remain controversial due to the lack of fossils,precise dating and integrated geochemical investigation.This study has conducted whole-rock elemental,and zircon U-Pb SHRIMP dating and Lu-hf isotope analyses on three types of representative metasedimentary rocks including garnetbearing mica-quartz schist,graphite-muscovite-quartz schist and dolomitic marble from the Susong complex zone.The UPb SHRIMP dating data indicate that the sedimentary protolith of these rocks have the maximum depositional ages of less than 840-750 Ma and have various sedimentary provenances.In combination with zircon Lu-hf isotope compositions,the provenance of the metasedimentary rocks in the region is for the first time documented to be mainly derived from four groups of magmatic rocks formed at~2.5 Ga,~2.0 Ga,~1.4 Ga and~0.8 Ga in response to four episodes of igneous activity in the northeastern margin of the Yangtze Block.The conventional geothermobarometry combined with rare metamorphic zircon ages indicate that the studied rocks underwent the Late Triassic continental subduction-related metamorphism with peak epidote-amphibolite facies conditions at P=0.34-0.91 GPa and T=427-532°C.In addition,results of the elemental contents(i.e.,La,Ce,Th andΣREE)and ratios(i.e.,Eu/Eu^(*)and La_(N)/Yb_(N))suggest that the protoliths of the metasedimentary rocks were mainly shales,wackes and limestones,most probably related to the Rodinia supercontinent rifting along the northern margin of the Yangtze Block during the Neoproterozoic.

Early Cretaceous to Middle Eocene Magmatic Evolution of Eastern Pontides:Zircon U-Pb Ages and hf isotopes,and Geochemical and Sr-Nd Isotopic Constraints from Multiphase Granitoids,NE Turkey

The Eastern Pontides orogenic belt(EPOB)represents a significant segment of the AlpineHimalayan orogenic belt that evolved from the Paleozoic to Cenozoic periods.Here we report new zircon U-Pb ages,together with Lu-hf isotopes,and whole-rock geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic analyses of plutonic rocks from EPOB,northeastern Turkey.Our aim is to interpret magmatic evolution in which the granitoids formed.Zircon U-Pb dating of six samples yielded crystallization ages of~134,~82,~39 Ma,respectively.They show a wide range of87Sr/86Sr((i))(0.7039–0.7109),andεNd(t)values varying from-9 to+4.6,yielding model ages(TDM)from 520 to 1623 Ma,suggesting a heterogeneous magma source.Dated zircons show exlusively positiveεhf(t)values(+12.4 to+1.4),yielding model ages(TDM)from 352 to 1059 Ma,implying that they are most likely derived from a juvenile lower crust rather than the mature continental crust.In this study,we suggested that the northward subduction of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab began from the Early Cretaceous and resulted in the Late Cretaceous magmatism.Moreover,the Middle Eocene magmatism in the EPOB was related to the collision of the Anatolide Taurid Platform(ATP)with the Pontides.

Provenance of Uranium Mineralization of the Yuqia Area,Northwest China:Constraints from Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology and hf isotopes

Many sandstone-type uranium mineralization sites have been identified along the northern margin of the Qaidam Basin in North China.Intense tectonism and multistage magmatism that occurred there have restricted the use of conventional techniques(petrogeochemistry)to deduce the sources of detritus and uranium in these sediments,and to further explore the sandstone-type uranium deposits.In this study,U-Pb geochronological and hf isotopic analyses were conducted on detrital zircon grains collected from Jurassic to Paleogene sandstones exposed in the Yuqia area of the Qaidam Basin.The results indicate that the U-Pb ages of the analyzed zircon grains are clustered into four groups,285–229,498–401,999–806,and 2520–2305 Ma.Theε_(hf)(t)of the analyzed zircon grains ranges from-21.9 to+10.5,with two-stage hf model ages(T_(DM2))concentrated between 2.1 and 1.3 Ga.Based on paleocurrent studies and results of petrological,detrital zircon geochronology,and hf isotopic analyses,the Jurassic sediments in the Yuqia area were likely derived from the tectonic belt along the northern margin of the Qaidam Basin,such as the Qilian Mountains and the Quanji Block.In contrast,the Paleogene sediments were probably sourced from the northern margin of the Qaidam Basin and the Qilian Mountains.The uranium and thorium content and Th/U value of the rock mass and sedimentary strata in the source area show that the Indosinian Early Paleozoic uranium-rich granites and the Middle Jurassic uranium-rich strata of the northern margin of the Qaidam tectonic belt in the source area provide dual uranium sources for the Yuqia sandstone-type uranium mineralization.Therefore,the study area appears to be favorable for sandstone-type uranium mineralization and may have potential for uranium prospecting.
