heroism is an unique appearance of human *** to theory of Western liberating history research, "essence of human history is conflicts and confrontations of civilizations from different regions, most of which is military conflicts."This thesis introduces collective heroism from East and individual heroism from West with analysis of typical heroic films, famous grassroots heroism from literature with ordinary ancient heroic literature, developmental history and essences of contemporary heroism from different countries, rise and enriched core of modern heroism with analysis on modern media products, influence of heroism on human society and individuals.

Thomas Hardy is one of the most famous novelists in England. Tess of the d’Urbervilles is one of his immortal masterpieces. It’s about the tragic fate of a country girl Tess who is pure, beautiful, proud, kind and diligent. After suffering the initial consequences of the innocent seduction or rape, she is reduced to precariously vulnerable position by social prejudices and the prevalent moral standards. At last she kills a rich man who causes her tragedy, but she is sentenced to death. In this paper, I will introduce a vital aspect——heroism of Tess. I study this topic through its definition and standard. By analyzing different examples of Tess’ s heroic action, I discuss the relationship between Tess’ s heroism and her tragedy. Moreover, I try to probe the inevitable factors and significance of her tragedy from the aspects of social environment, religion and so on.

American Roth

An analysis of the Philip Roth's sustained pursuit of his American identity mixed with his engagement with the trope of the American Adam is the center of this paper. From the outset of his career, Roth has sought to be understood as an American, not Jewish, writer. But as his career unfolded, the challenges of sustaining his American identity grew, whether in Portnoy's Complaint, Sabbath's Theatre or the American Trilogy. The confrontation between American and Judaic identities increasingly became his subject as his Jewish roots threatened his American identity stemming from a Protestant, if not Puritan, literary heritage. Coleman Silk and Swede Levov from The Human Stain and American Pastoral represent the challenge best summarized by Abe Ravelstein in Bellow's eponymous novel when he remarks that “as a Jew you are also an American, but somehow you are not.” The paradox of Roth’s entanglement with the trope of the American Adam is that he both pursues and denies this identity, accepting its heroism but acknowledging its impossibility. One moment he publically declares “if I’m not an American, I am nothing,” but on the other, to be Roth he knows he must violate the Adamic ideal, prepared to renounce neither his American nor Jewish identities.

《贝奥武甫》所反映的时代，是盎格鲁撒克逊地区尚未归顺基督教的时代，但诗中已经流露出朦胧的基督徒意识。基督徒意识与世俗英雄主义精神的同现，反映了日耳曼古老的文化传统与新兴的基督教文化的撞击与融合。见奥武甫的形象便是植根于这一复杂的文化背景中的英雄，因此，相对于希腊史诗中的英雄，贝奥武甫的形象更具有丰富的精神内涵，体现了欧洲史诗中英雄形象的发展。

In Milton＇s Paradise Lost, Satan is conspicuously depicted as the ＂mighty chief＂（I 566） and ＂the dread commander＂（I 589） of the rebel army. True to the Hebrew meaning of his name, Satan poses appropriately as a grand ＂Adversary＂（I 629; II 282） to ＂wage by force or guile eternal war＂（I 121） against God. The poet has deliberately built up a parallel between Satan and Christ the Son, who is the commander-in-chief of the angelic army. With ＂Almighty arms / Gird on, and Sword upon [his] puissant Thigh＂（VI 713-14）, the Son certainly makes an impressive figure of warrior-general. Satan＇s stance as the ＂idol of majesty divine＂ is really extraordinary. During the War in Heaven, he does show superhuman courage and strength; his ability to change his bodily form has no doubt increased his potential as a warrior. Furthermore, he commands a highly disciplined army, surpassing by far the best troops in human history. All this seems to indicate Satan as a great hero. Even before God proclaims the Son to be raised ＂by merit＂ to the position of＂second omnipotence＂（III 309）, Milton has already made it clear to the reader that Satan, too, is ＂by merit rais＇d / To that bad eminence＂（II 5-6）. This ambivalent merit of Satan has incurred heated controversy among the critics. The present paper will set out to analyze the encounter between Satan and the Son in Paradise Lost, in an effort to determine the true meaning of heroism.

In dramas, the traditional heroes are usually built as one in high social ranks or with some power. Their heroism is manifested in their courage and determination in front of difficulties. Through comparison of protagonists in Macbeth and The Glass Menagerie, this paper will try to illustrate the analysis of tragic heroism in dramas of different times helps a lot for better understanding of social problems and their artistic quality.
