Hypertension(HTN)is one of the most common chronic diseases affecting over 30%of the adult population globally,with a growing incidence rate.This article aims to identify the commonly used herbs for HTN treatment and examine their claims,criticisms,and challenges.It further aims to provide useful recommendations regarding the use of herbs for HTN treatment.HTN complications,such as coronary heart disease,stroke,peripheral vascular disease,vision impairment,and renal failure can result in morbidity and mortality.The high cost of conventional medications,which sometimes may not even be available or easily accessible with their unfavorable side effects as well as taking more than one pill per day,has led hypertensive patients,particularly those in rural areas,to explore alternative treatments such as herbal therapies.It is crucial to determine the different modes of action,doses,safety,and efficacy of herbal remedies used in combination with conventional medications to improve treatment adherence and enhance patient outcomes.

Osteosarcoma is a rare primary malignancy of bone that is prone to early metastasis. Resection surgery and chemotherapeutic regimens are current standard treatments for osteosarcoma. However, the long-term survival rate of patients with osteosarcoma is low due to a high risk of metastasis. Hence, a new approach is urgently needed to improve the treatment of osteosarcoma. Compared with chemotherapy, natural active constituents isolated from herbs exhibit less adverse effects and better anti-tumor effects. This study aimed to summarize the anticancer effects of constituents of herbs on the progression and metastasis of osteosarcoma cells. It showed that many constituents of herbs inhibited osteosarcoma by targeting proliferation, matrix metalloproteinases, integrin and cadherin, and angiogenesis. The findings might be beneficial for the development of new drugs and treatment strategies.

Objective To study the use of Chinese medicine(CM)in cancer patients in southern China.Methods A total of 1,950 cancer patients finished questionnaires in four provinces in southern China.The survey included socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of participants,dosage forms,efficacy,and side effects.Results The study results showed that cancer patients with higher education(>12 years)were more likely to accept the treatment of Chinese herbs.There were 54.61%(1,065 cases)of patients chose Chinese herbs for the initial treatment and 14.46%(282 cases)chose Chinese herbs as monotherapy.Most patients(54.51%,1,063 cases)continuously used CM for more than 6 months,and a few of them(212 cases)used CM for up to 3 years.All kinds of dosage forms of CM had been used,including CM decoction,CM patent prescription and CM injection.Concerning the efficacy in the view of patients,40.31%(786 cases)believed that it would be effective to take Chinese herbs before they starting the anti-cancer treatment,and the percentage increased to 81.08%after 1-month CM treatment.The effect of Chinese herbs was mainly demonstrated by symptom relief and improvement of quality of life,and 8.31%(162 cases)of patients experienced control of tumor growth and decreased tumor markers.Furthermore,only 14.31%(279 cases)participants reported that they experienced side effects during CM treatment.Conclusion This large scale investigation reflects the current situation of domestic CM usage objectively and comprehensively,which might provide new ways for cancer treatment.

Effect of Aqueous Extracts of Several Kinds of herbs on Human Platelet Aggregation and Expression of P-Selectin in Vitro

Objective： To study the effect of aqueous extract of several kinds of herbs on human platelet aggregation and expression of P-selectin in vitro. Methods： Blood was collected from volunteers. Effects of the prepared water extracts of herbs on platelet aggregation were monitored on a Packs-4 aggregometer. The fluorescence intensity of water extracts of Caulis Spatholobi, Flos Carthami and Rhizoma Curcumae on the expression of P-selectin in human platelets of healthy persons was measured with flow cytometry. Results： Out of several herbs investigated, Flos Carthami and Rhizoma Curcumae potently inhibited platelet aggregation after incubation with platelet-rich plasma （PRP） for 15 min. Caulis Spatholobi, Flos Carthami and Rhizoma Curcumae inhibited adenosine-5＇-diphosphate （ADP） or platelet activating factor （PAF）-induced platelet aggregation in PRP in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast to Flos Carthami and Rhizoma Curcumae, Caulis Spatholobi could not inhibit thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. Despite its inability to inhibit thrombin-induced platelet aggregation in PRP, Caulis Spatholobi had a greater anti-aggregating activity in PRP induced by ADP or PAF. Caulis Spatholobi and Flos Carthami showed significant inhibitory effects on the expression of P-selectin. Conclusions： Caulis Spatholobi, Flos Carthami and Rhizoma Curcumae have potent anti-platelet properties, and their inhibitory actions are mediated via different mechanisms. Caulis Spatholobi inhibited ADP-induced platelet aggregation but not by thrombin, indicating that its mechanism of action might be independent of the thromboxane pathway. The effect of Caulis Spatholobi and Flos Carthami were associated with suppressing the expression of P-selectin.

As total life expectancy increases, the prevalence of age-related diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer's disease is also increasing. Many hypotheses about Alzheimer's disease have been developed, including cholinergic neuron damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Acetylcholine is a major neurotransmitter in the brain and cholinergic deficits leads to cognitive dysfunction and decline. Recent studies have linked diabetes as a risk factor in developing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. The incidence of patients with type II diabetes and increased levels and activity of α-amylase is higher in patients with dementia. It has been shown that aromatherapy with essential oils from the mint family can improve cognitive performance in Alzheimer's disease patients. Selected monoterpenoids from these essential oils are reported to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, both in vitro and in vivo. Terpenoids are small, fat-soluble organic molecules that can transfer across nasal mucosa if inhaled, or penetrate through the skin after topical application, enter into the blood and cross the blood-brain barrier. Recent evidence supports the idea that the common constituents of essential oils also inhibit α-amylase, a starch digestive enzyme that plays an important role in the control of diabetes. The mint family is a fragrant plant family that contains most of the culinary herbs found in the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet is considered to be one of the healthiest diets in the world, and is found to be beneficial not only for the heart but also for the brain. herbs used in this diet are rich in antioxidants that can prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals. However, our study shows that they also contain biologically active compounds with potent α-amylase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. Consumption of fresh herbs can help boost memory and reduce sugar levels in the body. The use of herbs as a functional food could lead to significant improvements in health. Objective:To evaluate in vitro immunomodulating properties and potential cytotoxicity of six tropical medicinal herbs and food plants namely Antidesma madagascariense(Euphorbiaceae) (AM),Erylhroxylum macrocarpum(Erythroxylaceae)(EM),Faujasiopsis flexuosa(Asteraceae) (FF),Pittosporum senacia(Pittosporaceae)(PS),Momordica charantia(Cucurbitaceae)(MC) and Orimum tenuiflorum(Lamiaceae)(Of).Methods:Initially,the crude water and methanol extracts were probed for their capacity to trigger immune cells’ NADPH oxidase and MPO-dependent activities as measured by lucigenin- and luminol-amplified chemiluminescence,respectively; as compared to receptor-dependent(serum opsonised zymosan- OPZ) or receptor-independent phorbol myristerate acetate(PMA).Results:Preliminary screening on whole human blood oxidative buret activity showed significant and concentration-dependent immunomodulating properties of three plants AM,FF and OT.Further investigations of the fractions on isolated human polymorphonuclear cells(PMNs) and mice monocytes using two different pathways for activation of phagocytic oxidative burst showed that ethyl acetate fraction was the most potent extract. None of the active samples had cell-death effects on human PMNs,under the assay conditions as determined by the trypan-blue exclusion assay.Since PMA and OPZ NADPH oxidase complex is activated via different transduction pathways,these results suggest that AM,FF and OT does not affect a specific transductional pathway,but rather directly inhibit a final common biochemical target such as the NADPH oxidase enzyme and/or scavenges ROS.Conclusions:Our findings suggest that some of these plants extracts/fractions were able to modulate significantly immune response of phagocytes and monocytes at different steps,emphasizing their potential as a source of new natural alternative immunomodulatory agents.

Tibetan medicinal plants have been used for more than 2 000 years. In order to find their differences in antioxidant activity, total phenolics and total flavonoids between "hot-nature" and "cold-nature" herbs, we investigated the antioxidant activities of 40 Tibetan herbs from Qinghai plateau, with 20 herbs in cold-nature and 20 herbs in hot-nature. Antioxidant capacities were evaluated by the following methods: scavenging ABTS?+(2, 2′azinobis-(3-ethylbenz-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), scavenging O2?-, and Ferric-reducing antioxidant power(FRAP). The effects on inhibition of mitochondrion lipid peroxidation were determined by measuring the formation of TBARS(Thiobarbituric acid reactive substrates). Total phenolics and flavonoids were estimated by Folin-Ciocalteu and Na NO2-Al(NO3)3-Na OH colorimetric methods. Interestingly, the cold-nature herbs displayed higher antioxidant activities than the hot-nature ones, corresponding to nearly three-fold higher total phenolic contents in the cold-nature herbs. Moreover, the antioxidant activities correlated linearly with the levels of total phenolics for both cold-nature and hot-nature herbs, but only with the levels of total flavonoids for the hot-nature herbs. The results suggested that the phenolic compounds, but not the flavonoids, play the major role in antioxidant capacities of the cold-nature herbs. These findings could shed new lights on the study the theory of Tibetan medicine.

Four different fresh and dried herb species(sage,thyme,mint and lemonbalm)were evaluated to study the effect of drying process on the total phenolics,antioxidant activity,flavonoid contents and color properties.Fresh mint had the highest contents of total phenolics(335.4 mg GAE/100 g),whereas lower levels were respectively found in sage(316.4 mg GAE/100 g)followed by lemonbalm(303.2 mg GAE/100 g)and thyme(299.2 mg GAE/100 g).Dry processing significantly decreased the phytochemical contents of all investigated herbs.Compare to air drying,total phenolics,antioxidant activity and flavonoids content in herbs decreased apparently by oven dried.Fresh mint had the highest antioxidant activity(87.46%)and flavonoids content(298.51 mg CE/100 g),while the fresh sage,thyme and lemonbalm were found to have antioxidant activity values of 86.81%,86.56% and 85.26%,respectively.Results showed that air drying herbs contained more total phenolics,antioxidant activity,and flavonoids than oven drying herbs.

Herbal medicines play a crucial role in the healthcare system in China and other East Asian countries,and also have been used as alternative medicines in most Western countries[1-3].However,in most cases,the metabolic fates of herbal constituents and their effects on drug metabolism or endogenous metabolism in the human body have not been well-investigated[4-5].Notably,the concomitant use of herbal medicines may lead to clinically relevant herb-drug interactions or adverse reactions or even metabolic disorders,when some herbs are co-administrated with those drugs with narrow therapeutic indices(e.***.warfarin,digoxin,thyroid hormones and some anticancer agents)[6-8].
