Efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine as adjunctive therapy in sepsis patients with bloodstream infection:a propensity-matched analysis

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine in treating sepsis patients with bloodstream infection.METHODS:A 6-year retrospective study was carried out at a university hospital in China.Adult sepsis patients with bloodstream infection were included.The primary outcome was 28-day mortality after admission.Propensity score method was used to adjust for possible confounding.28-day mortality was estimated by KaplanMeier analysis and compared using the log-rank test.Cox regression analysis was carried out to identify factors impacting in-hospital mortality outcomes.RESULTS:Following the application of the propensity score method,a total of 176 patients were included.The all-cause 28-day mortality in the control group and Chinese herbal medicine group was 21.6%and 14.8%,respectively.Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that Chinese herbal medicine was associated with a lower hazard ratio(HR)in all-cause 28-day death compared with the control group[HR=0.44,95%CI(0.22,0.90),P0.05).Blood-activating and stasis-eliminating herb administration was associated with reduced inhospital mortality among sepsis patients with bloodstream infection[HR=0.54,95%CI(0.34,0.94),Pherbal medicine,especially the blood-activating and stasis-eliminating herb,might have certain efficacy and safety in treating sepsis patients with bloodstream infection.Clinicians should prescribe blood-activating and stasis-eliminating herb in treating these two coalescent critical diseases as long as no contraindications exist.However,further studies are needed to validate our results.

Background:The field of personalized medicine has gained increasing attention in cancer care,with the aim of tailoring treatment strategies to individual patients for improved outcomes.herbal medicine,with its long-standing historical use and extensive bioactive compounds,offers a rich source of potential treatments for various diseases,including cancer.Objective:To provide an overview of the current knowledge and evidence associated with incorporating herbal compounds into precision medicine strategies for cancer diseases.Additionally,to explore the general characteristics of the studies included in the analysis,focusing on their key features and trends.Search strategy:A comprehensive literature search was conducted from multiple online databases,including Pub Med,Scopus,Web of Science,and CINAHL-EBSCO.The search strategy was designed to identify studies related to personalized cancer medicine and herbal interventions.Inclusion criteria:Publications pertaining to cancer research conducted through in vitro,in vivo,and clinical studies,employing natural products were included in this review.Data extraction and analysis:Two review authors independently applied inclusion and inclusion criteria,data extraction,and assessments of methodological quality.The quality assessment and biases of the studies were evaluated based on modified Jadad scales.A detailed quantitative summary of the included studies is presented,providing a comprehensive description of their key features and findings.Results:A total of 121 studies were included in this review for analysis.Some of them were considered as comprehensive experimental investigations both in vitro and in vivo.The majority(n=85)of the studies included in this review were conducted in vitro,with 44 of them specifically investigating the effects of herbal medicine on animal models.Additionally,7 articles with a combined sample size of 31,271 patients,examined the impact of herbal medicine in clinical settings.Conclusion:Personalized medication can optimize the use of herbal m

herbal medicine use in Republic of Korea to alleviate side effects of COVID-19 vaccines:A cross-sectional study

Objective:Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)has spread worldwide,and several virus variants have emerged.Vaccines are administered to help prevent the infection.In Republic of Korea,most people take herbal medicine.This study investigated the use of herbal medicine to counter the side effects of COVID-19 vaccines.Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey.Chi-square tests were used to determine differences in the use of herbal medication according to sociodemographic characteristics.Independent two-sample and paired t-tests were performed to examine the effect and satisfaction of herbal medicine use for countering the side effects of COVID-19 vaccines.One-way analysis of variance was used to determine vaccine-related differences.Results:A total of 233 and 181 participants received the first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines,respectively.The majority of herbal medicine users were in their thirties,had a bachelor’s degree,suffered from side effects of vaccination,and received Vaxzevria for their first COVID-19 vaccine dose and Comirnaty for their second dose.The herbal medicine group had a higher satisfaction level of postvaccination side effects than the non-herbal medicine group(Pherbal medication to alleviate those symptoms(Pherbal formula was Shuanghetang.Conclusion:A third of participants receiving COVID-19 vaccines used herbal medication to counter the side effects of vaccination.The use of herbal medicine was associated with age,education level,vaccine brand,and whether side effects of vaccination occurred.herbal medication use was associated with greater satisfaction compared to vaccine recipients not using herbal medication.

Anti-anger Effects of herbal medicine:A Mini-Review of Rat Studies

Objective:To analyze the available data on the anti-anger effects of herbal medicines(HMs)as well as their underlying mechanisms in rat models.Methods:From 6 electronic databases[PubMed,EMBASE,China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),Wanfang,Oriental medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System(OASIS),and Research Information Sharing Service(RISS)],relevant animal experiments were searched by using"anger,""rats,"and"animal"as search keywords.The last search was conducted on November 22,2019,and all experiments involving rat models of anger and treatment using HMs published until the date of the search were considered.Results:A total of 24 studies with 16 kinds of HMs were included.Most studies have used the tail irritating method and"social isolation and resident intruder"method to establish anger models.According to the included studies,the therapeutic mechanisms of HMs for anger regulation and important herbs by their frequency and/or preclinical evidence mainly incladed regulation of hemorheology(Bupleuri Radix,Paeoniae Radix Alba,and Glycyrrhizae Radix),regulation of sex hormones(Bupleuri Radix,Cyperi Rhizoma,and Paeoniae Radix Alba),regulation of neurotransmitters(Cyperi Rhizoma),regulation of anger-related genes(Bupleuri Radix,Glycyrrhizae Radix,and Paeoniae Radix Alba),and other effects.Overall,Liver(Gan)qi-smoothing herbs including Bupleuri Radix and Cyperi Rhizoma were the most frequently used.Conclusions:This review found the frequent methods to establish an anger model,and major mechanisms of anti-anger effects of HMs.Interestingly,some Liver qi-smoothing herbs have been frequently used to investigate the anti-anger effects of HM.These findings provide insight into the role and relevance of HMs in the field of anger management.

Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1(LOX-1)have recently been identified to be closely related to the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis(AS).A growing body of evidence has suggested Chinese medicine takes unique advantages in preventing and treating As.In this review,the related research progress of AS and LOX-1 has been summarized.And the anti-As effects of 10 active components of herbal medicine through LOX-1 regulation have been further reviewed.As a potential biomarker and target for intervention in AS,LOX-1 targeted therapy might provide a promising and novel approach to atherosclerotic prevention andtreatment.

Traditional Chinese medicine,as a complementary and alternative medicine,has been practiced for thousands of years in China and possesses remarkable clinical efficacy.Thus,systematic analysis and examination of the mechanistic links between Chinese herbal medicine(CHM)and the complex human body can benefit contemporary understandings by carrying out qualitative and quantitative analysis.With increasing attention,the approach of network pharmacology has begun to unveil the mystery of CHM by constructing the heterogeneous network relationship of“herb-compound-target-pathway,”which corresponds to the holistic mechanisms of CHM.By integrating computational techniques into network pharmacology,the efficiency and accuracy of active compound screening and target fishing have been improved at an unprecedented pace.This review dissects the core innovations to the network pharmacology approach that were developed in the years since 2015 and highlights how this tool has been applied to understanding the coronavirus disease 2019 and refining the clinical use of CHM to combat it.

Respiratory symptoms are most commonly experienced by patients in the early stages of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, with a better understanding of COVID-19, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting haveattracted increasing attention. The gastrointestinal tract may be a target organ of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The intestinal microecological balance is a crucial factor for homeostasis, including immunity andinflammation, which are closely related to COVID-19. herbal medicine can restore intestinal function and regulate the gut florastructure. herbal medicine has a long history of treating lung diseases from the perspective of the intestine, which is called thegut-lung axis. The physiological activities of guts and lungs influence each other through intestinal flora, microflora metabolites,and mucosal immunity. Microecological modulators are included in the diagnosis and treatment protocols for COVID-19. Inthis review, we demonstrate the relationship between COVID-19 and the gut, gut-lung axis, and the role of herbal medicine intreating respiratory diseases originating from the intestinal tract. It is expected that the significance of herbal medicine in treatingrespiratory diseases from the perspective of the intestinal tract could lead to new ideas and methods for treatment.

Qili Qiangxin, a compound herbal medicine formula, alleviates hypoxia-reoxygenation-induced apoptotic and autophagic cell death via suppression of ROS/AMPK/mTOR pathway in vitro

Objective: Qili Qiangxin(QLQX), a compound herbal medicine formula, is used effectively to treat congestive heart failure in China. However, the molecular mechanisms of the cardioprotective effect are still unclear. This study explores the cardioprotective effect and mechanism of QLQX using the hypoxiareoxygenation(H/R)-induced myocardial injury model.Methods: The main chemical constituents of QLQX were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-evaporative light-scattering detection. The model of H/R-induced myocardial injury in H9c2 cells was developed to simulate myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury. Apoptosis, autophagy,and generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) were measured to assess the protective effect of QLQX. Proteins related to autophagy, apoptosis and signalling pathways were detected using Western blotting.Results: Apoptosis, autophagy and the excessive production of ROS induced by H/R were significantly reduced after treating the H9c2 cells with QLQX. QLQX treatment at concentrations of 50 and 250 μg/mL caused significant reduction in the levels of LC3Ⅱ and p62 degradation(P < 0.05), and also suppressed the AMPK/mTOR signalling pathway. Furthermore, the AMPK inhibitor Compound C(at 0.5 μmol/L),and QLQX(250 μg/mL) significantly inhibited H/R-induced autophagy and apoptosis(P < 0.01), while AICAR(an AMPK activator, at 0.5 mmol/L) increased cardiomyocyte apoptosis and autophagy and abolished the anti-apoptotic effect of QLQX. Similar phenomena were also observed on the expressions of apoptotic and autophagic proteins, demonstrating that QLQX reduced the apoptosis and autophagy in the H/R-induced injury model via inhibiting the AMPK/mTOR pathway. Moreover, ROS scavenger,N-Acetyl-L-cysteine(NAC, at 2.5 mmol/L), significantly reduced H/R-triggered cell apoptosis and autophagy(P < 0.01). Meanwhile, NAC treatment down-regulated the ratio of phosphorylation of AMPK/AMPK(P < 0.01), which showed a similar effect to QLQX.Conclusion: QLQX plays a cardioprotective role by alleviating apoptotic a

To repair the blood–brain barrier(BBB)after traumatic brain injury(TBI)remains a multidisciplinary challenge.No first-line drugs are available.Here,we reported a novel and non-toxic functional negative-charged carbon dots(CDs)generated from green Semen pruni persicae and Carthamus tinctorius L.(TH-CDs)through a hydrothermal synthesis without any organic solvent.The surface of TH-CDs retained part functional groups of active pharmacophores from both drugs.TH-CDs could improve the neurological function,brain edema,neuronal damage,and the BBB permeability by tail vein injection of mice models without systemic toxicity.Furthermore,higher expression of tight junction proteins claudin 5 and ZO-1 was observed after TH-CDs administration,which may be due to the electrostatic interaction between TH-CDs and claudin 5.Our study highlights an inexpensive,green,non-toxic,and intravenous functional TH-CD,which represents a potential TBI treatment strategy.

herbal medicine is safe and effective in treating various diseases.Traditional herbal medicine plays a tremendous role in treatment of various diseases and accompanying complications,hence herbal medicine requires remarkable attention in further research for the development of numerous active formulations for treatment of health troubles.The plant needs special consideration for development and research of unidentified compound and characterization of novel active molecules that overcome multiple pathological abnormalities.The genus Manilkara contains 135 plants around the world.This overview discusses all the virtues of most important and commonly used plant Manilkara zapota(L.)P.Royen(M.zapota),also known as Sapodilla.M.zapota has various traditional beneficial effects in treatment of various diseases and disorders dating back to prehistoric times and used in ancient traditional system of herbal medicine.
