A Review of Research on Warm-Sector Heavy Rainfall in China

Warm-sector Heavy rainfall (WSHR) events in China have been investigated for many years. Studies have investigated the synoptic weather conditions during WSHR formation, the categories and general features, the triggering mechanism, and structural features of mesoscale convective systems during these rainfall events. The main results of WSHR studies in recent years are summarized in this paper. However, WSHR caused by micro- to mesoscale systems often occurs abruptly and locally, making both numerical model predictions and objective forecasts difficult. Further research is needed in three areas:(1) The mechanisms controlling WSHR events need to be understood to clarify the specific effects of various factors and indicate the influences of these factors under different synoptic background circulations. This would enable an understanding of the mechanisms of formation, maintenance, and organization of the convections in WSHR events.(2) In addition to South China, WSHR events also occur during the concentrated summer precipitation in the Yangtze River-Huaihe River Valley and North China. A high spatial and temporal resolution dataset should be used to analyze the distribution and environmental conditions, and to further compare the differences and similarities of the triggering and maintenance mechanisms of WSHR events in different regions.(3) More studies of the mechanisms are required, as well as improvements to the model initial conditions and physical processes based on multi-source observations, especially the description of the triggering process and the microphysical parameterization. This will improve the numerical prediction of WSHR events.

Centrality Dependence of Charmed-Meson Photoproduction in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We calculate the centrality dependence of inclusive cross section of large-p _(T )charmed-meson(D^0,D~*,D^(*+),and D_s^+)from Heavy quark fragmentation by the hard photoproduction processes in ultrarelativistic Heavy ion collisions.The numerical results indicate that the contribution of the hard photoproduction processes cannot be negligible for the inclusive charmed-meson production in Au-Au collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider(RHIC)and Pb-Pb collisions at Large Hadron Collider(LHC).

Review of accelerator driven Heavy ion nuclear fusion

Using high energy accelerators for energy production by nuclear fission goes back to the 1950's with plans for“breeder accelerators”as well as with early ideas on subcritical reactors,which are currently pursued in China and other countries.Also,fusion came in,when the idea emerged in the mid 1970's to use accelerators and their highly time and space compressed beams in order to generate the extremely high density and temperatures required for inertial fusion energy production.Due to the higher repetition rates and efficiencies of accelerators,this was seen as a promising alternative to using high power lasers.After an introduction to nuclear fission applications of accelerators,this review summarizes some of the scientific developments directed towards this challenging application e with focus on the European HIDIF-study-and outlines parameters of future high energy density experiments after construction of the FAIR/Germany and HIAF/China Heavy ion accelerator projects.

Melatonin,as a ubiquitous indoleamine hormone,is synthesized primarily by the pineal gland.It has diverse biological effects through quite complex mechanisms.More recently,studies have focused on the mechanism of melatonin in anti-reproductive toxicity/damage.Since melatonin possesses strong antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties,researchers have examined its potential role in protecting against male reproductive toxicity/damage,which may be induced by chemotherapy or environmental toxicants and can lead to male infertility.In this article,recent progress regarding the protective effects of melatonin on male reproductive toxicity/damage is reviewed.

New insights into multiple provenances evolution of the Jurassic from Heavy minerals characteristics in southern Junggar Basin, NW China

The method of random forest was used to classify the Heavy mineral assemblages of 2 418 Jurassic samples in the southern Junggar Basin, and determine the distribution of the Heavy mineral assemblages from the same provenance systems. Based on the analysis of Heavy minerals assemblages, ZTR index, sedimentary characteristics, U-Pb zircon ages, whole-rock geochemical and paleocurrent direction analysis, the study reveals that five important provenances were providing sediments to the southern Junggar Basin in the Jurassic period: The North Tianshan(NTS), Central Tianshan(CTS), Bogda Mountains, Zhayier Mountains and Kalamaili Mountains. During the Early Jurassic, NTS-CTS, Kalamaili Mountains and Zhayier Mountains are primary provenances, Bogda Mountains started to uplift and supply clastic materials in the Middle Jurassic. There are three sedimentary area in the Jurassic of southern Junggar Basin: the western part, the central part and the eastern part. In the western part, the clastic materials of the Early Jurassic was mainly from NTS blocks and Zhayier Mountains, and the sediments were dominantly derived from the Zhayier Mountains during the Middle–Late Jurassic. In the central part, the main provenance of the Early Jurassic switched from NTS to CTS. In the Xishanyao Formation, the main source went back to NTS again. The NTS was the primary provenance during the sedimentary periods of Toutunhe Formation and Qigu Formation. In the eastern part, the contribution of CTS and Kalamaili Mountains were considered as major provenances in the Early Jurassic-Xishanyao Formation, small proportion of sediments were from NTS. The Bogda mountains uplifted and started to provide sediments to the Junggar Basin in the sedimentary period of Xishanyao Formation, and became the major source during the Toutunhe Formation period, with small amount of sediments from CTS. In situ preparation of well-dispersed CuO nanocatalysts in Heavy oil for catalytic aquathermolysis

We developed an in situ synthesis strategy for preparing well-dispersed CuO nanoparticles as aquathermolysis catalyst for viscosity reduction in Shengli Heavy oil(China). A Cu(OH)_2-contained microemulsion was employed as a carrier to disperse the precursor Cu(OH)_2 to the Heavy oil phase. Under aquathermolysis condition(240 ℃, 2.5 MPa of N_2), the Cu(OH)_2 precursors would first be converted in situ to well-crystallized and size-homogeneous CuO nanoparticles naturally, catalyzed by which the viscosity of Shengli Heavy oil could be reduced as much as 94.6%; simultaneously, 22.4% of asphaltenes were converted to light components. The agglomeration of the in situ prepared monoclinic CuO nanoparticles could be negligible throughout the catalytic reaction. Based on the characterization results of ~1 H NMR, elemental analysis and GC-MS of oil samples before and after catalytic aquathermolysis, the mechanism for viscosity reduction of Heavy oil in the catalytic system was investigated.

Effects of the Heavy metal cadmium on photosynthetic activity and the xanthophyll cycle in Phaeodactylum tricornutum

A bstract Cadmium(Cd) is one of the most common and widespread Heavy metals in the environment. Cd has adverse effects on photosynthesis that are countered by photosystem I(PSI) and photosystem II(PSII); however, the protective responses of these photosystems to Heavy metal stress remain unclear. Using the model diatom P haeodactylum tricornutum, a biological indicator that is widely used to assess the impact of environmental toxins, we simultaneously measured the effects of Cd on PSI and PSII and examined the levels of pigments in response to high light treatments before and after Cd exposure. Cd significantly reduced the quantum yield and electron transport rates of PSI and PSII. The quantum yield of non-photochemical energy dissipation in PSI due to donor side limitation increased faster than the quantum yield due to acceptor side limitation. The Cd treatment activated the P. tricornutum xanthophyll cycle under artificial light conditions, as indicated by an increased diatoxanthin content. Xanthophyll is important for photoprotection; therefore, the accumulation of diatoxanthin may down-regulate PSII activities to reduce oxidative damage. Together, our results suggest that the rapid reduction in PSII activities following Cd exposure is an adaptive response to Heavy metal stress that reflects the variable exposure to external stressors in the native P. tricornutum environment.

Upper extremity disorders in Heavy industry workers in Greece

AIM To investigate the disability due to musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremities in Heavy industry workers.METHODS The population under study consisted of 802 employees, both white-and blue-collar, working in a shipyard industry in Athens, Greece. Data were collected through the distribution of questionnaires and the recording of individual and job-related characteristics during the period 2006-2009. The questionnaires used were the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand(QD) Outcome Measure, the Work Ability Index(WAI) and the ShortForm-36(SF-36) Health Survey. The QD was divided into three parameters-movement restrictions in everyday activities, work and sports/music activities-and the SF-36 into two items, physical and emotional. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed by means of the SPSS v.22 for Windows Statistical Package.RESULTS The answers given by the participants for the QD did not reveal great discomfort regarding the execution of manual tasks, with the majority of the participants scoring under 5%, meaning no disability. After conducting multiple linear regression, age revealed a positive association with the parameter of restrictions in everyday activities(b = 0.64, P = 0.000). Basic education showed a statistically significant association regarding restrictions during leisure activities, with b = 2.140(P = 0.029) for compulsory education graduates. WAI's final score displayed negative charging in the regression analysis of all three parameters, with b =-0.142(P = 0.0), b =-0.099(P = 0.055) and b =-0.376(P = 0.001) respectively, while the physical and emotional components of SF-36 associated with movement restrictions only in daily activities and work. The participants' specialty made no statistically significant associations with any of the three parameters of the QD.CONCLUSION Increased musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity are associated with older age, lower basic education and physical and mental/emotional health and reduced working ability.

Swelling/extraction test of Russian reservoir Heavy oil by liquid carbon dioxide

The mass transfer between Heavy oil and liquid carbon dioxide and the changes of the Heavy phase(mixture of Heavy oil and CO_2) and light phase(pure CO_2) in the mixture were tested in lab with Heavy oil samples from Russia. The experimental results showed that the Heavy oil hardly expanded when the concentration of carbon dioxide in the mixture was 10%. When the concentration of carbon dioxide was higher than 26%, the volume of the Heavy phase decreased, and the viscosity of the Heavy phase increased exponentially as the light components extracted from the Heavy oil exceeded the carbon dioxide saturated in the Heavy oil. When the concentration of carbon dioxide in the mixture was 26%, the effect of viscosity reducing to the Heavy phase was the strongest. The density of the light and Heavy phases, volume factor, and solubility of gas and flash viscosity of Heavy phase all increased with the rise of carbon dioxide concentration in the mixture. The best concentration of carbon dioxide in the mixture was 26%, when the Heavy oil expanded the most and the viscosity of the Heavy phase was the lowest. When the concentration of carbon dioxide in the mixture was between 10% and 26%, the volume of the light phase was the smallest and the oil displacement effect was the best.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON CHARACTERISTICS AND THERMODYNAMIC DEVELOPMENT MECHANISMS OF TWO TYPES OF WARMSECTOR Heavy RAINFALL ALONG THE SOUTH CHINA COAST

Warm-sector Heavy rainfalls along the south China coast from April to June during 2009-2014 can be divided into two main types based on their low-level circulations. Type I is the southerly pattern with meridional convergence line at the west of the Pearl River estuary, which is formed by the convergence of southeasterly, southerly, and southwesterly flows. Type II is the southwesterly pattern with a latitudinal convergence line at the east of the Pearl River estuary, which is formed by the convergence of westerly and southwesterly flows. Statistics on 6-hourly Heavy rainfall events indicates that, during the afore-mentioned 6 years, there were on average 73.2 occurrences of the southerly pattern and 50.3 occurrences of the southwesterly pattern per year. After the onset of summer monsoon in the South China Sea, the occurrence frequencies of both patterns increase remarkably. The synthetic diagnosis of pattern circulation shows that, at 500 h Pa, for the southerly pattern, there is a broad warm high ridge, and a temperature ridge is behind the high ridge, which causes an obvious warm advection at the high ridge area. There is no frontal region. For the southwesterly pattern, the circulation is a weak trough with a temperature trough behind it. The position of the frontal region is near Yangzi River, and the south China coast is in the warm-sector of the frontal region. At the vertical cross-section of each of the two categories of Heavy rainfall, there is a strong vertical motion center stretching to 400 hPa, where the convergence layer in the rainfall region is deep and with several vertical convergence centers overlapping one another. Both types of Heavy rainfalls are with abundant water vapor, accompanied with deep convective instability energy layers, and with strong release of latent heat caused by condensation of water vapor. The release of latent heat leads to the warming-up and stretching of the air column, thus strengthens deep convergence and vertical velocity upward. There is a stronger latent heat-rel
