Planning for a healthy city: The Influence of Built Environment on Elderly's Body Mass Index

The influence of the built environment on human health has attracted increasing attention. Given that the elderly have been an integral part in China, the built environment not only influences their health, but also influences the life and work of their children, thus resulting in social problems. Based on questionnaire obtained data on the elderly people in Chongqing, an ordinal multi-categorical regression model is established to analyze the influence of built environment on the leisure and physical activities(especially walking) that the elderly participated in, and the influence on their Body Mass Index(BMI). The results show that, in addition to age and preference for high-calorie diet, whether there is convenient access to leisure and fitness places from where they live, and the corresponding distance in-between are significantly related to the BMI of the elderly. Particularly, the best distance range is less than 1,000 m, within which leisure and fitness places have significant impact on the BMI of the elderly and the influence shows distance decay. In the last section of this paper, according to the conclusion, proposals are put forward for the optimization of the built environment.

Against the backdrop of a healthy city initiative in helping encourage and facilitate walking behavior,this study first elaborates the fitness function of the ladder trails,which largely form the daily living spaces for the people in mountainous cities or areas.It then analyses the existing research on the elements and guidelines of environmental design from the perspective of their pedestrian friendliness while discussing their suitability to the needs of the elderly.With the research framework set up in the first part,empirical research focusing on the walking behavior of the elderly has been carried out based on two comparable cases of Chongqing Mountain trails.Observing,survey,and interviews have been applied to collect the data.This study concludes with a summary of the elements and principles for designing ladder trails,which are walking-friendly for the elderly.

To contain the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan,unprecedented interventions,including city lockdown and community closure,have been implemented.However,most of the current studies focused on evaluation of the city lockdown,but paid limited attention to the impacts of the community containment measures within the city.This research addressed this important issue from the perspective of urban planning,based on the epidemic and remote sensing data of 194 communities of Wuhan.We found that the number of confirmed cases of communities is highly related to urban planning factors,e.***.area percentage of buildings and density of neighboring markets.These factors are relevant to the residents’activity patterns,which therefore impact the mode of virus transmission.Our research confirmed the effectiveness of the community-oriented control strategies,provided a valuable reference for other cities that are suffering from the epidemic,and exhibited new thoughts into future urban planning.

Neuroscience research shows that the environment shapes people’s physical and mental health through its effects on the brain and nervous system.Currently,mental health issues are increasingly highlighted,and research on the psychological impacts of the urban environment brought by urbanization has received increasing attention.This article,from an view of multidisciplinary perspective,gives a brief overview of the concepts and theories relating to urban environment and mental health,using Citespace to investigate various domestical and international studies in this field,and introducing research progresses in terms of the overall characteristics of urban environment,their impacts on mental health,and the main environmental influence factors and functional mechanism.It then summarizes the weakness of the studies in China and makes proposals for furthering the research in the future,such as setting up a multidisciplinary integrated theoretical method framework,deepening factor identification,process analysis,and mechanism interpretation,promoting the establishment of evidence-based healthy city planning and design,and finally exploring research paradigms suitable for Chinese conditions and pushing for the development of urban public mental health enhancement strategies with Chinese characteristics.

Under the strategic concept of“healthy China,”communities are not only basic units to compose a healthy city,but also main bodies to fulfill the goal of“health for all”and healthy city development.Since the end of the last century,healthy community research and related practice have seen rapid development in both China and abroad.This paper systematically reviews and compares the concepts,theories,and practices related to healthy community since the 1990s,and analyzes the influencing factors and their acting paths of healthy community in terms of healthy housing,healthy environment,healthy neighborhood,and health services.In the end,the paper points out the main problems in healthy community research and practice and proposes development prospects.It suggests that in the future,efforts should be made to further strengthen the interdisciplinary and cross-level collaboration for healthy community,improve the systematic study on the influencing mechanism of healthy community,enhance the exploration of the whole-process implementation mechanism,and promote the research and construction of intelligent healthy community.

Based on the overall plan for promoting economic, political, cultural, social, and ecological progress, this paper establishes an evaluation index system of urban healthy development and also conducts a comprehensive evaluation about the healthy development of 287 designated cities at prefecture level and above. The results have shown four major features of the development of China’s cities. Firstly, at current stage, the level of China’s urban healthy development is generally low and the proportion of sub-healthy cities in the total cities is high; secondly, eastern cities in general enjoy higher level of healthy development, while western cities are just the opposite, with obvious gaps in healthy development among different provinces; thirdly, large cities boast higher level of healthy development in general terms, but their environmental quality remains a very worrying issue; at last, the healthy development of moderately developed cities is relatively balanced compared with the economically developed cities. In conclusion, the overall condition of China’s urban healthy development is not optimistic and it is an arduous task to promote transition from sub-healthy to healthy development for all cities in China.
