Li-S batteries(LSBs)have been considering as new and promising energy storage systems because of the high theoretical energy density and low price.Nevertheless,their practical application is inhibited by several factors,including poor electrical conductivity of electrode materials,greatly volumetric variation,as well as the polysulfide formation upon the cycling.To address these problems,it is imperative to develop and design effective and suitable sulfur host anode materials.Metal organic frameworks(MOFs)-based cathode materials,possessing their good conductivity and easy morphology design,have been extensively studied and exhibited enormously potential in LSBs.In this review,a comprehensive overview of MOFs-based sulfur host materials is provided,including their electrochemical reaction mechanisms,related evaluation parameters,and their performances used in LSBs in the past few years.In particular,the recent advances using in-situ characterization technologies for investigating the electrochemical reaction mechanism in LSBs are presented and highlighted.Additionally,the challenges and prospects associated with future research on MOF-related sulfur host materials are discussed.It is anticipated to offer the guidance for the identification of suitable MOFs-based sulfur cathode materials for high-performance LSBs,thereby contributing for the achievement of a sustainable and renewable society.

Mesenchymal stromal cells(MSCs)hold great promise for tissue regeneration in debilitating disorders.Despite reported improvements,the short-term outcomes of MSC transplantation,which is possibly linked to poor cell survival,demand extensive investigation.Disease-associated stress microenvironments further complicate outcomes.This debate underscores the need for a deeper understanding of the phenotypes of transplanted MSCs and their environment-induced fluctuations.Additionally,questions arise about how to predict,track,and comprehend cell fate post-transplantation.In vivo cellular imaging has emerged as a critical requirement for both short-and long-term safety and efficacy studies.However,translating preclinical imaging methods to clinical settings remains challenging.The fate and function of transplanted cells within the host environment present intricate challenges,including MSC engraftment,variability,and inconsistencies between preclinical and clinical data.The study explored the impact of high glucose concentrations on MSC survival in diabetic environments,emphasizing mitochondrial factors.Preserving these factors may enhance MSC survival,suggesting potential strategies involving genetic modification,biomaterials,and nanoparticles.Understanding stressors in diabetic patients is crucial for predicting the effects of MSC-based therapies.These multifaceted challenges call for a holistic approach involving the incorporation of large-scale data,computational disease modeling,and possibly artificial intelligence to enable deterministic insights.

Trans-Regional and Cross-host Spread of mcr-Carrying Plasmids Revealed by Complete Plasmid Sequences——44 Countries,1998−2020

Background:The surveillance of antimicrobial resistance genes(ARGs)and bacteria is one critical approach to prevent and control antimicrobial resistance(AMR).Next-generation sequencing(NGS)is a powerful tool in monitoring the emergence and spread of ARGs and resistant bacteria.The horizontal transfer of ARGs across host bacteria mediated by plasmids is a challenge in NGS surveillance for resistance because short-read sequencing can hardly generate the complete plasmid genome sequence,and the correlation between ARGs and plasmids are difficult to determine.Methods:The complete genome sequences of 455 mcr-carrying plasmids(pMCRs),and the data of their host bacteria and isolation regions were collected from the NCBI database.Genes of Inc types and ARGs were searched for each plasmid.The genome similarity of these plasmids was analyzed by pangenome clustering and genome alignment.Results:A total of 52 Inc types,including a variety of fusion plasmids containing 2 or more Inc types were identified in these pMCRs and carried by complex host bacteria.The cooccurrence of ARGs in pMCRs was generally observed,with an average of 3.9 ARGs per plasmid.Twenty-two clusters with consistent or highly similar sequences and gene compositions were identified by the pangenome clustering,which were characterized with distributions in different countries/regions,years or host bacteria in each cluster.Discussion:Based on the complete plasmid sequences,distribution of mcr genes in different Inc type plasmids,their co-existence with other AMRs,and transmission of one pMCR across regions and host bacteria can be revealed definitively.Complete plasmid genomes and comparisons in the laboratory network are necessary for spread tracing of ARG-carrying plasmids and risk assessment in AMR surveillance.

Metabolomics-based comparative analysis of the effects of host and environment on Viscum coloratum metabolites and antioxidative activities

Viscum coloratum(Kom.)Nakai is a well-known medicinal hemiparasite widely distributed in Asia.The synthesis and accumulation of its metabolites are affected by both environmental factors and the host plants,while the latter of which is usually overlooked.The purpose of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the effects of host and habitat on the metabolites in V.coloratum through multiple chemical and biological approaches.The metabolite profile of V.coloratum harvested from three different host plants in two habitats were determined by multiple chemical methods including high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet(HPLC-UV),gas chromatography-flame ionization detector(GC-FID)and ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-QTOF/MS).The differences in antioxidant efficacy of V.coloratum were determined based on multiple in vitro models.The multivariate statistical analysis and data fusion strategy were applied to analyze the differences in metabolite profile and antioxidant activity of V.coloratum.Results indicated that the metabolite profile obtained by various chemical approaches was simultaneously affected by host and environment factors,and the environment plays a key role.Meanwhile,three main differential metabolites between two environment groups were identified.The results of antioxidant assay indicated that the environment has greater effects on the biological activity of V.coloratum than the host.Therefore,we conclude that the integration of various chemical and biological approaches combined with multivariate statistical and data fusion analysis,which can determine the influences of host plant and habitat on the metabolites,is a powerful strategy to control the quality of semi-parasitic herbal medicine.

Panoramic Insights into Microevolution and Macroevolution of A Prevotella copri-containing Lineage in Primate Guts

Prevotella copri and its related taxa are widely detected in mammalian gut microbiomes and have been linked with an enterotype in humans.However,their microevolution and macroevolution among hosts are poorly characterized.In this study,extensively collected marker genes and genomes were analyzed to trace their evolutionary history,host specificity,and biogeographic distribution.Investigations based on marker genes and genomes suggest that a P.copri-containing lineage(PCL)harbors diverse species in higher primates.Firstly,P.copri in the human gut consisted of multiple groups exhibiting high genomic divergence and conspicuous but non-strict biogeographic patterns.Most African strains with high genomic divergence from other strains were phylogenetically located at the root of the species,indicating the co-evolutionary history of P.copri and Homo sapiens.Secondly,although long-term co-evolution between PCL and higher primates was revealed,sporadic signals of co-speciation and extensive host jumping of PCL members were suggested among higher primates.Metagenomic and phylogenetic analyses indicated that P.copri and other PCL species found in domesticated mammals had been recently transmitted from humans.Thirdly,strong evidence was found on the extensively horizontal transfer of genes(e.g.,genes encoding carbohydrate-active enzymes)among sympatric P.copri groups and PCL species in the same primate host.Our study provides panoramic insights into the combined effects of vertical and horizontal transmission,as well as potential niche adaptation,on the microevolutionary and macroevolutionary history for an enterotyperepresentative lineage.

A novel benzo[4,5]furo[3,2-d]pyrimidine-based host as a n-type host for blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes

An electron-transport-type host was synthesized using a benzo[4,5]furo[3,2-d]pyrimidine(BFP)core to develop a high triplet energy host.The host was designed to have both the tetraphenylsilyl blocking group and the hole-transport-type carbazole group.In the device application,the host was used as an electron-transport-type host mixed with a hole-transport-type 3,3'-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1,1†-biphenyl(mCBP)host in the blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes(PhO-LEDs)doped with a[[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyrazin-1-yl-2(3H)-ylidene]-1,2-phenylene]bis-[[6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyrazin-1-yl-2(3H)-ylidene]-1,2-phenylene]iridium(Ir(cb)3)blue phosphor.As a result,the mCBP:CzBFPmSi mixed host showed high external quantum efficiency over 20%at 1000 cd m^(−2) and low efficiency roll-off in the blue PhOLEDs.

Lithiophilicity: The key to efficient lithium metal anodes for lithium batteries

Lithium metal anode of lithium batteries,including lithium-ion batteries,has been considered the anode for next-generation batteries with desired high energy densities due to its high theoretical specific capacity(3860 mA h g^(-1))and low standards electrode potential(-3.04 V vs.SHE).However,the highly reactive nature of metallic lithium and its direct contact with the electrolyte could lead to severe chemical reactions,leading to the continuous consumption of the electrolyte and a reduction in the cycle life and Coulombic efficiency.In addition,the solid electrolyte interface formed during battery cycling is mainly inorganic,which is too fragile to withstand the extreme volume change during the plating and stripping of lithium.The uneven flux of lithium ions could lead to excessive lithium deposition at local points,resulting in needle-like lithium dendrites,which could pierce the separator and cause short circuits,battery failure,and safety issues.In the last five years,tremendous efforts have been dedicated to addressing these issues,and the most successful improvements have been related to lithiophilicity optimizations.Thus,this paper comprehensively reviewed the lithiophilicity regulation in lithium metal anode modifications and highlighted the vital effect of lithiophilicity.The remaining challenges faced by the lithiophilicity optimization for lithium metal anodes are discussed with the proposed research directions for overcoming the technical challenges in this subject.

Pure Hydrocarbons:An Efficient Molecular Design Strategy for the Next Generation of host Materials for Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

CONSPECTUS:Fantastic progresses have been made since the discovery of phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes(PhOLEDs)in 1998(Nature 1998,395,151).In the emissive layer of a PhOLED,a heavy-metal complex(emitter)is dispersed as a guest in an organic semiconductor(host)in order to harvest both singlet and triplet excitons.This host/guest technique is essential to reach highperformance PhOLEDs.Undoubtedly,designing high-efficiency host materials for red,green,and blue phosphors has been the main driving force of the field.Nowadays,the most efficient PhOLEDs report very high external quantum efficiency(EQE)above 27%for the three colors.The molecular design of these high-efficiency host materials is based on small functional units,which have a crucial role in the device performance.These functional units are constructed on the assembly of electron-rich and/or electron-poor molecular fragments(such as carbazole,phenylamine,phosphine oxide,oxadiazole,pyridine,sulfone,etc.),which allows to finely tune the molecular orbitals energy levels(HOMO and LUMO)and the mobility of the charge carriers(hole and electrons).However,these molecular fragments incorporate heteroatoms,which in turn increase the molecular design complexity and production cost of the target materials and also create potential instability in the device.Indeed,the fragile C−N,C−P,and C−S bonds of such heteroatom-based hosts are involved,in part,in the OLED instability.As the instability of OLEDs is one of the most important problem to address at the current stage of development,developing new generations of host materials,without heteroatoms,has appeared as an important challenge in the field.In recent years,this new generation of host materials,called Pure HydroCarbons(PHC),only incorporating carbon and hydrogen atoms,has drawn the attention of the scientific community.PHC host materials only contain benzene rings,one of the most robust and inert building unit,which are assemble with suitable linkages to adjust their energy levels.However,reaching high-

The role of the human intestinal tract in host–microbe interactions has been highlighted in recent years.Several 3-dimensional(3D)models have been developed to reproduce the physiological characteristics of the human gut and to investigate the function of the gut microbiota.One challenge for 3D models is to recapitulate the low oxygen concentrations in the intestinal lumen.Moreover,most earlier 3D culture systems used a membrane to physically separate bacteria from the intestinal epithelium,which has sometimes made the studies of bacteria adhering to or invading cells less feasible.We report the establishment of a 3D gut epithelium model and cultured it at high cell viability under an anaerobic condition.We further cocultured intestinal bacteria including both commensal and pathogen directly with epithelial cells in the established 3D model under the anaerobic condition.We subsequently compared the gene expression differences of aerobic and anaerobic conditions for cell and bacterial growth via dual RNA sequencing.Our study provides a physiologically relevant 3D gut epithelium model that mimics the anaerobic condition in the intestinal lumen and supplies a powerful system for future in-depth gut–microbe interactional investigations.

Avoidance of parasitized host by female wasps of Aphidius gifuensis (Hymenoptera:Braconidae):The role of natal rearing effects and host availability?

Natal rearing experience of animals may affect their behaviors,such as habitat selection and oviposition decision.As part of the overall fitness of insect parasitoids, successful host discrimination (distinguishing parasitized hosts from unparasitized hosts) is of paramount importance.In this study we examined whether and how parasitoids' natal rearing experience would affect their host discrimination ability according to host availability.We established separate colonies ofAphidius gifuensis Ashmead by continual rearing on two hosts,Sitobion avenae E and Myzuspersicae (Suzler),and quantified self superparasitism and self superparasitism versus parasitism ratio for the four:combinations ofparasitoid colonies and host species (S.aveane and M.persicae)at four host densities (30,50,100 or 150 per plant).Results showed that self superparasitism ofM.persicae by A.gifuensis reared on S.avenae was significantly higher than by those reared on M.persicae,no matter whether the host densities were 30,50,100 or 150.Aphidius gifuensis reared on M.persicae significantly superparasitized more S.avenae than those reared on S.aveane only when host density was 30.Self superparasitism versus parasitism ratio of A.gifuensis from both colonies was always lower on natal hosts than on new hosts,and the difference was more pronounced as the host density decreased.These results suggested that natal rearing effects is important on host discrimination and oviposition decision of the parasitoid A.gifuensis.These effects promoted the parasitoid's host adaptation and made them confer greater fitness.
