Simulation of induced radioactivity for a heavy ion medical machine

The radioactivity induced by carbon ions of the Heavy Ion Medical Machine （himm） was studied to asses its radiation protection and environmental impact. Radionuclides in the accelerator component, and in the cooling water and air at the target area, which are induced from primary beam and secondary particles, are simulated by FLUKA Monte Carlo code. It is found that radioactivity in the cooling water and air is not very important at the required beam intensity and energy that is needed for treatment, while radionuclides in the accelerator component may cause some problems for maintenance work and, therefore, a suitable cooling time is needed after the machine is shut down.

武威和兰州重离子加速器使用回旋加速器作为其注入器。回旋加速器为该装置的同步加速器提供10μA的碳离子束流以满足其物理需求。而径向探针则是安装在回旋加速器内部实现束流流强和圈图测量的重要束诊元件。径向靶头上的束流信息经前端电子学拾取后会进一步进入数据采集系统,最终实现回旋加速器的束流流强和圈图测试。其中,径向探针的前端电子学采用皮安表,数据采集系统基于实时操作系统和FPGA技术。介绍了径向探针的机械结构设计,并分析了探头有无水冷结构的热结构;描述了控制系统软硬件架构,可以实现10 kHz的数据和位置信息的同步采集。最后,还介绍了探针机械和控制系统的实验室测试和验收标准以及在束测量结果。

Background The control system for ion source is based on distributed architecture.The hardware structure,working principle,interlock design and graphics interface design are introduced and stated in this paper.Purpose To improve the accuracy and usability of the electron cyclotron resonance ion source with advanced design for himm.Methods The data acquisition system is based on PLC and FPGA integrated circuit.Interlock protection is designed for vacuum system,power supplies system and cooling water system.Results The control system is tested with C5+ion beam,where fast reaction time and high-precision data processing during beam tuning have verified the stability and maintainability of the control system.Conclusion The latest results and the reliable long-term operation of the accelerator demonstrate that the performance has been continually improved with the development of the optimized control system.

Heavy ion therapy for cancer treatment is known as the world’s most advanced and most effective radiotherapy method. Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences spent a long time to research in this field. The beam of Chinese first medical heavy ion accelerator with independent intellectual property rights was successfully extracted on December 23rd, 2015 in Wuwei. Medical heavy ion accelerator is a huge system; this paper only describes the ion-source and cyclotron control software design.

There are more than one hundred pulse power supplies in the project of himm (High Ion Medical Machine).The control protocol of them is unified. But the HVPS (high voltage power supply) for deflecting plate of the beam extracted system is different.The control of HVPS includes the current settings, the status display and the HV turn on/off.

Chopper control and monitoring system plays an important role in himm (Heavy icon medical machine). It is used to control and monitor the outputs voltage of the pulse generator. The pulse generator outputs high voltage wave forms to 3 500 V on the basis of an input trigger, which requires +5 V 1 V into 50 Ω with a risetime of <20 ns togate. The Chopper control and monitoring system is designed and the structure of it is shown in Fig. 1.

The Heavy Ion Medical Machine (himm) has been established inWuwei, China. In order to realize the accelerate control of the himm (Ion Medical Machine), a new dedicated accelerator control system (ACS) has been developed and used. Because the himm is a commercial device, some new technologies which is different from CSR were used in himm. The system use a large number of industrial standard control modules and equipments standard industrial communication protocol is also used as far as possible, such as OPC (OLE of Process Control) and OPC UA (OPC Unified Architecture).
