A Comparison of Two Macroinvertebrate Multi-Plate Sampling Methods to Inform great lakes Monitoring and Remediation Efforts

Hester-Dendy (HD) multi-plate samplers have been widely used by state and federal government agencies for bioassessment of water quality through use of macroinvertebrate community data. To help guide remediation and restoration efforts at the Niagara River great lakes Area of Concern site, a multi-agency study was conducted in 2014 to assess the contribution of seven major urban tributaries on the US side of the river toward the impairment of the Niagara River. As part of this study, macroinvertebrate communities were sampled using two co-located versions of HD samplers: one version used by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and another by the US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Research and Development. Samplers were deployed in tributaries in highly developed watersheds with high percent impervious surface. The two sampling methods varied in terms of number and size of plates, between-plate spacing, and deployment method. Comparison of the similarity/grouping of communities with multivariate ordination techniques, Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling and Multi-Response Permutation Procedure, showed that both methods were able to detect differences in communities at stations, despite some grouping by month and method. The indices and metrics derived from the two HD methods were found to give comparable but not identical assessments of water quality. Despite their differences, the methods were robust with respect to water quality categories derived from indices used nationally (HBI) and by NY state (BAP). For the common richness metrics, total taxa and EPT richness, there was no statistical difference between means from 3 samplings. Some metrics, especially percent tolerant collector-gatherer individuals, did show significant differences at certain stations. Indicator Species Analysis showed some taxa associated with each method. The observed community differences were thought mostly due to the difference in sampler deployment position. .

Perspectives on offshore wind farms development in great lakes

Global warming emissions and carbon dioxide caused by human activities are overloading our atmosphere which cause web of significant and harmful impacts.There are little to no global warming emissions by renewable energy.To date,offshore wind farms generally have been installed in shallow ocean-coastal areas.The great lakes with freshwater have shown high potential for installing offshore wind farms,and significant advantages.There are more than 5 offshore windfarms in progress at the end of 2019 in great lakes.The object of this study is to present the capacity and prospects of offshore wind farms development in great lakes.Also,the power of wind farms,barriers,issues,wind vision,advantages and disadvantages,the criteria related to the location of the offshore wind farms in great lakes have been analyzed and presents statistics for decision-makers,interested communities,investors and academic researchers.This paper is among the rare works that have been done in aspect of statistical and data gathering for the wind offshore in great lakes as the moratorium in the Canadian side and the difficulties in obtaining permissions in the American side put the offshore wind sector on pause for a long time,and recently(since 2016)it started to get some momentum.The research has been conducted based on the analysis of acts,regulations,the subject’s literature and information from websites.

Preliminary results from an investigation of the U-238/Th-234 parent/daughter pair in the nearshore environments of Lake Michigan show that short-lived, naturally-occurring radionuclides are useful in determining the time scales of sediment transport processes on the orders of days to weeks. While the long term, depositional sink for some new particles entering the lake, either from rivers or shoreline erosion, has been well documented, the aggregate time scale of the processes by which these particles move from source to sink is not well quantified. These relatively 搉ew?particles may undergo numerous episodes of resuspension and redeposition before making their way through the coastal margin and entering the long term focusing processes active in the depositional basins of the lake. These episodic events can be large in scale and magnitude, resuspending as much or more material than is permanently deposited in the lake on an annual basis. Th-234, a particle reactive radionuclide with a 24 day half-life, would appear to be well suited as a tracer for following rapid particle movement, particle residence times in the overlying water, and alongshore transport processes. The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) deployed technique for collection of surface sediments residing in non-depositional (hard bottom) lakebeds and some preliminary time series results for transient excess Th-234 inventories in the nearshore of Lake Michigan are described.

Transaction costs for collaboration in the watershed management of the Cuyahoga River Area of Concern

This study examines the transaction costs of collaborative watershed management in the Cuyahoga River Area of Concern(AOC)—one of the 43 geographic areas designated by the U.S.and Canada great lakes Water Quality Agreement(GLWQA),where significant impairment of beneficial uses has occurred as a result of human activities.The Cuyahoga River is located in Northeast Ohio,the U.S.and flows through the City of Cleveland before draining into Lake Erie—one of the five great lakes of North America.The watershed is degraded due to municipal and agricultural discharges,streambank erosion,and contamination from urban and industrial sources.This research explores how a diverse group of stakeholders convened under the Cuyahoga River AOC Advisory Committee to share information,coordinate activities,agree on activities that restore beneficial uses,and support strategic management actions.In this study,23 semi-structured interviews with members of the advisory committee were conducted between January 28,2020 and April 20,2020,with follow-up emails and phone calls as needed to corroborate information.A review of research articles and government documents supported the interviews,including United States Environmental Protection Agency(U.S.EPA)and Ohio Environment Production Agency(OEPA)reports on the GLWQA and Cuyahoga River Remedial Action Plans.A third source of data is from direct participant observation at quarterly meetings of the advisory committee during 2017–2020,binational AOC conferences in 2017 and 2019,and other professional events geared towards restoring the Cuyahoga River AOC in 2016–2020.Results of this study include a set of recommendations to help guide group structure and decision-making processes,including(1)employing best available technology to organize AOC events and disseminate information;(2)supporting new members with an orientation and/or mentor to clearly define formal and informal committee rules;(3)assuring equal access to detailed information on management action plans with a real time dashboard;(4)u

Sexual and spatio-temporal variations have been observed in the life history parameters of many aquatic species and their causes have been related to harvesting pressure and environmental changes.This study aims to explore sexual,spatial and temporal variation in the growth and maturity through weight-at-length,length-at-age,and maturity-at-length relationships for Lake Erie Walleye(Sander vitreus)as a case to test some hypotheses.Hypotheses on whether harvest pressure and environmental changes(both local and global scale)caused the temporal changes of these life history traits were further diagnosed.Sexual and spatio-temporal variations in these life history traits were formulated using mixed-effects models.Our study found that geographic basin,sex,year and cohort all have substantial effects on the growth and maturity of Walleye based on survey data from 1989 to 2015.Multiple factors including water supply of Lake Erie,temperature,fishing pressure of Walleye,and global climate factors were found to correlate with the temporal variations of growth and maturity of Walleye significantly.Our findings should contribute to the future interpretation of Walleye life history variations and population dynamics.The methodology constructed in this study could be applied to explore the heterogeneity and impacting factors for other species in aquatic ecosystems.
