Seasonal dynamics and grazing rate of zooplankton in Yueqing Bay,China

The species composition,biomass,abundance,and species diversity of zooplankton were determined for samples collected from August 2002 to May 2003 from 14 stations in Yueqing Bay,*** growth rate and microzooplankton grazing rate were obtained by using the dilution method developed by Landry and *** spatial and temporal variations of zooplankton and its relationship with environmental factors were also *** results showed that the zooplankton in the Yueqing Bay could be divided into four ecotypes,namely coastal low saline species,estuary brackish water species,offshore warm water species,and eurytopic species.A total of 75 species of zooplankton belonging to 56 genera and 17 groups of pelagic larva were identified in the Yueqing *** coastal low saline species was the dominant ecotype in the study area,and the dominant species were Labidocera euchaeta,Acartia pacifica,Acrocalanus gibber,Pseudeuphausia sinica,and Sagitta bedoti among *** was considerable seasonal variation in zooplankton biomass and abundance in the surveyed *** peak biomass appeared in August,descending in November and in May,and the lowest biomass appeared in ***,the highest abundance of zooplankton was observed in August,with the abundance descending in the following months:May,November,and *** were similar horizontal distribution patterns for the biomass and the abundance of *** both increased from the upper to the lower bay in February and May,but decreased from the upper to the lower bay in *** and abundance were evenly distributed in the Yueqing Bay in ***,there was marked seasonal variation in the species diversity of zooplankton,which conformed to the abundance of *** of the dilution experiments indicated that there was grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton in the Yueqing Bay throughout the year though the rate of microzooplankton grazing on phytopla

The Preliminary Report on Rumen Protozoa grazing rate on Bacteria with a Fluorescence-Labeled Technique

Studies on the bacterial predation rate by rumen protozoa were carried out under laboratory conditions using a technique of fluorescence-labeled bacteria （FLB）. Four Xuhuai goats were used in this experiment to obtain rumen protozoa and bacteria. Two groups were designed as follows： One group was the whole bacteria which were labeled using fluorescence through removing free bacteria from rumen fluid （WFLB）; the other group was the bacteria which were labeled using fluorescence without removing free bacteria from rumen fluid （FLB）. The result indicated that the bacterial predation rates of rumen protozoa was 398.4 cells/（cell h） for the group WFLB, 230.4 cells/（cell h） for the group FLB, when the corresponding values expressed as bacteria-N, they were 2.15 pg N/（cell h） for the group WFLB, and 1.24 pg N/（cell h） for the group FLB, respectively. Extrapolating the assimilation quantity of nitrogen by ciliates on bacteria of Xuhuai goat, there were 103.2 mg N/（d capita） for the group WFLB, and 59.5 mg N/（d capita） for the group FLB, respectively. It was estimated that protein losses due to microbial recycling were 0.645 g pro/（d capita） for the group WFLB and 0.372 g pro/（d capita） for the group FLB, respectively. In addition, the fluorescence-labeled technique would be a potential assay for the determination of bacterial predation rate by rumen protozoa.

Stability analysis of n-species Lotka-Volterra almost periodic competition models with grazing rates and diffusions

In this pape, almost periodic solution of a n-species Lotka-Volterra competition system with grazing rates and diffusions is investigated. By using the method of upper and lower solutions anti Schauder fixed point theorem as well as Lyapunov stability theory, we give sufficient conditions under which the strictly positive space homogeneous almost perilodic solution of the system is globally asymptotically stable. Moreover, some numerical simulations are given to validate our theoretical analysis.

Ingestion of Brachionus plicatilis under different microalgae conditions

The effects of four microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris, Platymonas helgolandicavar, Isochrysis galbana, and Nitzschia closterium on the grazing and filtering rates of the marine rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The grazing rates in separate cultures of the four microalga were as follows： C. vulgaris 〉 P. helgolandicavar 〉 L galbana 〉 N. closterium. However, the filtering rates occurred in the following order： P. helgolandicavar 〉 N. closterium 〉 C. vulgaris 〉 L galbana. A mixed diets experiment revealed that P. helgolandicavar was the preferred diet of B. plicatilis. In addition, the grazing rate of B. plicatilis increased gradually as the density of the microalgae increased, until concentrations of 2.5×10^6 cells mL^-1 for C. vulgaris and 1.5×10^6 cells mL^-1 for I. galbana were obtained. Furthermore, the filtering rate increased slightly when the density of the microalgae was low, after which it declined as the microalgal density increased. The grazing rates of B. plicatilis were as follows during the different growth phases： stationary phase 〉 exponential phase 〉 lag phase 〉 decline phase. Additionally, the filtering rates during the growth phases were： exponential phase 〉 lag phase 〉 stationary phase 〉 decline phase. The results of this study provide foundational information that can be used to explore the optimal culture conditions for rotifers and to promote the development of aquaculture.
