Secondary disasters and crises such as disordered development and environmental pollution occurring amid the human resettlement process have been a heated academic focus in the field of urban and rural planning. However, the social issues involved in this process have not been given enough attention. This paper studies secondary man-caused disasters with respect to the natural environment and the social and cultural systems, which are linked together by the rapid urbanization process, in order to provide references for future theoretical and practical urban and rural planning studies. The study reveals that during resettlement, typical social issues such as societal anomie, social stratification, and individual poverty have occurred in the Three gorges Area. The primary cause is that stimulated by rapid urbanization, human settlement development and social evolution have formed a double helix model composed of time and space that is similar to a DNA model, and any mismatched occurrences on either side will likely lead to a social structural problem. As an academic response to the significant urbanization process that is taking place in China, this study reflects the political and economic trends in global environmental change research, as well as the technology trends in humanity studies.

The Three gorges Dam on the Yangtze River is situated on the intact rock mass composed of diorite granite at the southern termination of the Huangling block which, as a sub plate with a double layer structure (crystalline basement and sedimentary cover) in the Chinese inland, keeps a constant but slow uplift as a whole since its formation in the Indoncisia movement. Tectonic deformation within the block is not significant, with the exception of a slight southeastward tilt. The block is confined by many active structures, of which the sub longitudinal Yuanan and Xiannvshan ( Mount Fairy ) deep fault zones are the main strongly seismogenic zones. The Yuan’an fault zone represents a regional boundary among West Henan, West Hubei and West Hunan mountainous regions as well as the Nanyang, Jianghan and Dongting Lake basins, with a total length of more than 1,000 km. Two M 6 5 earthquakes (in Changde and Nanyang) occurred in the fault zone in historic time and the distance between the two epicenters is about 500 km. The Mount Fairy fault zone extends northward along the Xiangxi River and ends at the Qingfeng fault. It runs a total length of more than 220 km. southward across Yuyang Pass and then its trace is unknown. The fault zone has a tectonic condition for occurrences of M 6.0 earthquakes. The possible seismic risk for the dam may come from these two strong seismogenic zones. Thus the seismic intensity to influence the dam is estimated to be Ⅵ～Ⅶ and the horizontal peak acceleration to be 0 1～0 15 g.

To study the relationship between chlorophyll-a and environmental variables during spring algal bloom in Xiangxi Bay of Three gorges Reservoir, the support vector regression (SVR) model was established. In surveys, 11 stations have been investigated and 264 samples were collected weekly from March 4 to May 13 in 2007 and February 16 to May 10 in 2008. The parameters in SVR model were optimized by leave one out cross validation. The squared correlation coefficient R2 and the cross validated squared correlation coefficient Q2 of the optimal SVR model are 0.8202 and 0.7301, respectively. Compared with stepwise multiple linear regression and back propagation artificial neural network models using external validation, the SVR model has been shown to perform well for regression with the predictive squared correlation coefficient R2pred value of 0.7842 for the test set.

The history of the Yangtze River is constituted by numerous river piracies that enabled the river to extend its drainage system. Two river captures are well recognized: the piracy of the Jinsha River (Jinshajiang) formerly tributary of the Red River at Shigu in Yunnan Province and the Three gorges area that linked the upper and the middle Yangtze river reaches in Hubei province. The first one is well documented, while the second, because of difficulties to retrieve datable materials and the complexity of the area geomorphology, is still quite unknown. Numerous conflicting hypotheses have been formulated to explain the pattern of river piracy, no agreement exists on the location of the drainage divide and of the point of capture;chronologies extending from the Eocene to the late Quaternary are given. Geomorphic indices can be used to examine the geomorphological and tectonic processes responsible for the development of the drainage basins. In this paper, we analyzed drainage pattern, basin shape, basin asymmetry, stream junction angle to infer the drainage of the paleorivers that were pirated, and to propose a model of the pattern of river capture based on the importance of structure, tectonic and lithological controls in the area. We showed that the Three gorges area has been very important to the history of the Yangtze river as the piracy of the upper and middle reaches enabled the river to reach its current extend.

A high dam of 185 meters above sea level is designed for the Yangtze Three gorges reservoir, which can accommodate water of 39.3 billion cubic meters at its maximum and whose impoundment will reach up to 175 meters deep. The local stress status, medium propriety and regional stress field in and around the reservoir will vary with the impounding and water fluctuation in the reservoir, which will probably induce earthquakes. In order to detect the crustal deformation, the tectonic fault displacement and the sink of a reservoir basin in the area and the reservoir induced seismicity, it is necessary to set up a monitoring system. The paper introduces a study of monitoring in the Yangtze Three gorges area.

Analysis of Landscape Patterns and the Trend of Forest Resources in the Three gorges Reservoir Area

In this paper, first, based on landscape ecology theories, we respectively selected indexes from 4 aspects, area, edge, shape, and density, of the landscape type to describe the status of forest landscape patterns, and we established the stability index of landscape pattern (LSBI). Then, based on geo-statistical theories, we divided the forest in the reservoir area into 3990 grids of 4 km × 4 km using network technology and employing ordinary Kriging modelling to make trend surface analyses of the forest resources in the reservoir area. Finally, based on statistics principles, we used sampling theory to systematically extract 227 samples to obtain 7 periods of remote-sensing data from 1990a to 2012a. Then, we classified and extracted the forest in the sampling area using remote sensing, and we analysed each result with an Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Model (ARIMA) time-series model. The results indicated the following: 1) the landscape structure of the reservoir area was primarily needle-leaved forest, broad-leaved forest and bush forest, and the mixed stands and bamboo stands were secondary;2) the difference of the forest landscape pattern stability in the reservoir area, in all directions, was not significant, but the southern region was slightly more stable;and 3) the stability of the forest landscape pattern in the reservoir area increased from 1990a to 2012a. It kept increasing until 2016a. This study provides a theoretical basis for the reasonable management and decisions about the forest resources in the Three gorges Reservoir Area. Meanwhile, it also explores methods for relevant research and has practical significance.

Seismic tomography from the Pg wave data along the non-longitudinal profile in the Three gorges Region is presented in this paper.The seismic tomography method,and the acquisition and analysis of seismic travel time are broadly outlined.The tomography of basement reveals a great amount of significant information and shows that the low-velocity zone is due to the lithologic difference and the fault fracture zone.It also demonstrates that there exist three high-velocity zones with v>6.4 km/s at the basement; the largest of zones which strikes north-south is located at the southwestern side of Huangling Anticlinorium and extends into the anticlinorium northward.The other two high-velocity zones are,respectively,situated at the eastern side of the anticlinorium and the western side of the profile.The high-velocity zones are inferred to originate from the upwelling of material with high-velocity from deep crust.

Based on the introduction of the general situation of the research area,the SWOT analysis is applied to study the strengths,weakness,opportunities and threats of the industrial development in Three gorges Reservoir area. The strengths are represented by the following four aspects:abundant agricultural resources,rich tourism resources,rich mineral resources and rich hydro energy. The weaknesses are analyzed from the following three aspects:the backward infrastructure,the acute conflict of the emigration of manufactures and the poor exploitation of advantageous resources. The opportunities of industrial development,which cover the opportunities bought by the guidance of national policies and preferential policies,by the improvement of traffic conditions in the reservoir area and by the completion and operation of the Three gorges Reservoir Project. From the analysis of poor investment environment,irrational industrial structure and serious shortage of capitals,the threats of the industrial development are analyzed. In order to promote further the industrial development of the Three gorges Reservoir area,the countermeasures are put forward. In the first place,optimizing the industrial structure and developing leading industries;in the second place,strengthening the construction of infrastructure and improving the investment environment;in the third place,optimizing human resources so as to provide intellectual support for industrial development.

The developmental status of the Three gorges Reservoir in the post-migration era is expounded.Firstly,positioning of ecological reservoir is incompatible with its development;secondly,adopting the market selection and government-directed migration mode;thirdly,tough task in the post-migration era;fourthly,prevention of geological disasters and environmental management.After the analyses,the adoptable approaches for developing the Three gorges Reservoir are concluded.The approaches cover supporting migrants and trying to stabilize and enrich them;supporting the development of industries around the reservoir;intensifying the construction of ecological environment in the reservoir;and strengthening the support of central fiscal policies.The policies and suggestions on developing the Three gorges Reservoir from the perspective of fiscal policies are put forward.Firstly,they include the fiscal and tax measures on prompting ecological migration and stabilizing and enriching migrants.The specific measures include the fiscal and tax measures on promoting the employment of migrants;measures on providing social security for migrants;fiscal subsidies and preferential policies and increasing the input on solving the problems left after reconstruction.Secondly,they are the fiscal and tax measures for promoting the industrial development in the reservoir.The specific contents include displaying the functions of industrial fund to optimize the industrial structure of the reservoir;providing preferential policies on taxes to attract capitals and intensifying the strength of local finance.

The outbreak of Yantze vole ( Microtus fortis) population in Dongting Lake region is closely related to the evolvement of lake beaches,because the deposition of lake sediments results in the expansion of lake beaches,which provides the possibility of the increase of the vole's population. Reclaiming farmland from lake via building cofferdams,eliminating snails by building cofferdams for eradicating schistosomiasis,and over-hunting predators in the region cause the voles becoming a pest after the 1970s. In recent years,the Three gorges Project and the conversion from farmland into lake have had deep impacts on the environment in the lake region. The dispatching of the down flow rate by the project has induced the expansion of the low and medium level beaches in the lake region,while converting farmland into lake directly has induced the expansion of the lake beaches,both of which have expanded the potential habitats of the vole's population. Therefore,more attention should be paid to the quantitative variation trend of the vole's population in the future.
