Experimental study on N_2O and CH_4 fluxes from the dark coniferous forest zone soil of the gongga Mountain, China

The static closed chamber technique is used in the study on the CH4 and N2O fluxes from the soils of primeval Abies fabri forest, the succession Abies fabri forest and the clear-cut areas of mid-aged Abies fabri forest in the gongga Mountain from May 1998 to September 1999. The results indicate the following: (i) The forest soil serves as the source of atmospheric N2O at the three measurement sites, while the fluxes of CH4 are all negative, and soil is the sink of atmospheric CH4. The comparative relations of N2O emissions between the three sites are expressed as primeval Abies fabri forest > clear-cut areas > succession Abies fabri forest, and those of CH4 consumption fluxes are primeval Abies fabri forest > succession Abies fabri forest > clear-cut areas. (ii) Signifi-cant seasonal variations of N2O emission at various sites were observed, and two emission peaks of N2O occurr during summer (July—August) and spring (February—March), whereas N2O emission is relatively low in winter and spring (mid March—April). Seasonal variations of CH4 consumption at each measurement site fluctuate drastically with unclear regularities. Generally, CH4 consumption fluxes of succession Abies fabri forest and clear-cut areas are higher from mid May to late July but lower in the rest of sampling time, while the CH4 flux keeps a relatively high value even up to Sep-tember in primeval Abies fabri forest. In contrast to primeval Abies fabri forest, the CH4 absorbabili-ties of succession Abies fabri forest and clear-cut areas of mid-aged Abies fabri forest are weaker. Particularly, the absorbability of the clear-cut areas is even weaker as compared with the other two sites, for the deforestation reduces the soil absorbability of atmospheric CH4. (iii) Evident diurnal variation regularity exists in the N2O emissions of primeval Abies fabri forest, and there is a statistic positive correlation between the fluxes of N2O and air temperature (R=0.95, n=11, <0.01), and also the soil temperature

Source and yearly distribution of PAHs in the snow from the Hailuogou glacier of Mountain gongga, China

Snow samples were collected over a 3-year period from 2012 to 2014 at the Hailuogou glacier of Mountain gongga(Mt. gongga) and analyzed for 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry(GC–MS). The results show that total average levels of the 16 PAHs ranged from 452 to 290 ng·L^(-1) with a possible declining trend from 2012 to 2014. Distances between the sampling sites and the emission sources were estimated at typically less than 500 km. The results suggest that the major source of PAHs was from coal combustion, while contributions from automobile exhaust played an important role in more recent years. This finding was in agreement with the characteristics of presence of local industry, residence, and recent development of tourism of the surrounding areas.

Variations in carbon isotope ratios of C_3 plants and distribution of C_4 plants along an altitudinal transect on the eastern slope of Mount gongga

Variations in carbon isotopic ratios (δ 13C) of C3 plants and distribution of C4 plants were investigated along an altitudinal transect on the eastern slope of Mount gongga, and the environmental effects on them were discussed. It is shown that plants with C4 photosynthetic pathway mainly occur at altitudes below 2100 m a.s.l., suggesting that the low summer temperature is responsible for the distributional pattern. In addition, δ 13C of C3 plants increases with elevation at the region above 2000 m a.s.l. with the characteristics of humid climate, and the increase rate in δ 13C for C3 plants is about 1.3‰ per kilometer. Temperature determines the altitudinal trend of δ 13C.

Study on the Sustainable Development of Tourism Industry in gongga Mountainous Areas in Western Sichuan

There are abundant excellent tourism resources in gongga mountainous areas (Mount gongga, also known as Minya Konka, the highest mountain in Sichuan, China), yet the development thoughts and management modes in this region are far away from the advanced level in other mountainous areas in China or abroad due to the insufficient knowledge about ecotourism. Generally speaking, tourism development in gongga mountainous areas are limited by various problems such as lack of overall development plan, system support, brand image, financial support and environmental protection consciousness. In view of the present situation of tourism development in this region, sustainable development measures are proposed on the basis of ecotourism and sustainable development theories, including making ecotourism development plan for gongga mountainous areas, improving transportation conditions, tourism infrastructures and accommodation facilities, training service and management personnel with professional ecological knowledge; establishing ecotourism product system of gongga mountainous areas; carrying out ecotourism management, innovating management system, setting up ecological monitoring system, implementing scientific functional division of tourism sites, constructing environment capacity control system and disasters management system of mountainous areas, improving medical and mountainous assistance system. Natural conditions and economic development of gongga mountainous areas are similar to those in western China, it is expected to provide theoretical basis and practical experience for developing the vast mountainous areas in western China through studying the sustainable tourism development of gongga mountainous areas.

A STUDY ON THE SOIL RESPIRATION OF THE FORESTS ON gongga MOUNTAIN

CO 2 is the key gas of the greenhouse ones, the effect of its radiation on temperature ascent is 60% of the total greenhouse gases. The elevating CO 2 concentration influences to a great extent the future climate warming in a regional or global scale. Forest is the main part of carbon cycling in the land ecosystem.. Monitoring CO 2 absorption and emission in the forest ecosystem play a non\| fungible role in study on the global change. gongga Mountain is located in the southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau, and there exist intact vertical vegetation zonality, which is advantageous for measuring soil CO\-2 emission on each vertical forest zonality and researching the ecological factors of soil *** east slope of gongga Mountain develops 5 natural forest vertical zones from lower to higher altitudes: secondary forest, ever\|greened and deciduous broad\|leaved mixed forest, broad\|leaved and coniferous mixed forest, coniferous forest and alpine shrubs. Based on the two\|year’s measurement, the soil respiration of each forest averaged: 5 488, 6 344, 5 912, 4 176 and 3 864μmol CO 2/(m 2·s); the flux of soil CO 2 emission was arranged: 208 628, 241 169, 224 746, 158 752 and 146 891kg CO 2/(hm 2·d), respectively.

Habitat use and diel activity pattern of the Tibetan Snowcock(Tetraogallus tibetanus):a case study using camera traps for surveying high-elevation bird species

Background:Global climate change has had significant effects on animal distribution and population dynamics in mid-latitude alpine areas,but we know little about the basic ecology of high-altitude species due to the difficulties of conducting field research in the harsh climate and habitat present at high *** Tibetan Snowcock(Tetraogallus tibetanus) is a little-known phasianid distributing in alpine areas at extremely high elevations in the mountains surrounding the Tibetan *** the species occupancy rate and discussing the factors affecting its distribution based on infrared-triggered camera techniques would provide both a baseline to measure the influence of global warming and valuable information on its conservation and ***:We used infrared-triggered cameras to investigate the Tibetan Snowcock on the western slope of *** from June to November *** used the R package "overlap" to visualize its activity pattern,and used an occupancy model to both examine its habitat use as well as to determine the most influential variables affecting its habitat ***:Using 103 camera traps over 9213 camera-days,we recorded 428 instances of Tibetan *** diel activity peaks of Tibetan Snowcock occurred during the periods of 8:00-10:00 am and 18:00-20:00 *** model estimate of occupancy for Tibetan Snowcock(0.830) was slightly higher than the na?ve site occupancy based on camera detections(0.663),indicating a wider use of habitat than the camera traps ***,slope,settlement density,road density,and EVI(enhanced vegetation index) were the most influential variables for its habitat ***:The Tibetan Snowcock is confirmed to be *** species prefers an environment with a high elevation,gentle slope,and low EVI,apparently facing a trade-off between predator risk,foraging efficiency,and food *** human impact was low,there was a positive correlation between the habitat use of the Tibet
