Navigating Chinese cities to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030

Achieving the 17 United Nations sustainable development goals(SDGs)in China largely depends on the transition of cities toward sustainable ***,significant knowledge gaps exist in evaluating the SDG index at the city scale and in understanding how to simulate pathways to achieve the 17 SDGs for Chinese cities by *** study aimed to quantify the SDG index of 285 Chinese cities and developed a forecasting model to simulate the performance of each SDG in each city until 2030 using varied *** results indicated that although the SDG index in Chinese cities increased by 33.97%during 2005–2016,Chinese cities,which continued their past paths,achieved an average of only five SDGs by *** promote the joint achievement of all SDGs,we designed different paths for all SDGs of each of the 285 cities and simulated their SDG index until *** the scenarios,216 Chinese cities(75.79%)could achieve 9–13 more SDGs in 2030 and the overall SDG index can improve from 74.57 in 2030 to 97.49(target score 100)by adopting more intensive path *** lastly determined a cost-effective path for each SDG of each city to promote joint achievement of all SDGs by *** proposed simulation model and cost-effective path serve as a foundation for other countries to simulate SDG progress and develop pathways for achieving SDGs in the future.

Extreme heat is among the deadliest of weather-related hazards,exerting far-reaching impacts on the natural environment and human society *** risk has been rising worldwide over the past decades,particularly in densely populated urban settlements in which more than half the world’s population live.1,2 This rise is primarily attributed to anthropogenic greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions,of which the dominant share is contributed by the Global North.1 The Global North comprises economically developed countries with higher levels of industrialization,technology,infrastructures,energy consumption,and GHG emissions(e.g.,North America and West Europe)whose cities are major emission hotspots.1 Besides,emission transfers via international trade from the Global South,encompassing countries with lower economic development and energy consumption,higher poverty,and more vulnerable infrastructures(e.g.,India and Brazil)compared with the Global North,contribute a nonnegligible share of GHGs.

The millennium development goals (MDGs) were eight international development targets for the year 2015 that were established following the adoption of the United Nations Millennium Declaration in *** MDGs are aimed at reducing extreme poverty and set a series of time-bound goals,particularly in health,gender equality,and environmental sustainability [1].The target set for tuberculosis (TB) was to reduce TB prevalence and mortality rates by half by 2015 compared to the 1990 baseline rates [2].China has in fact achieved the TB targets five years ahead of the scheduled timeline [3].From 1990 through 2010,TB case detections had decreased by 65%,from 170 to 59 cases per 100000 population and the mortality rates by almost 80% [4].

China has recently experienced extraordinary development in medical care and has achieved both Millennium Development goals 4 and *** to the 2012 China Medical and Health Service White Paper,the pregnancyrelated mortality rate(pregnancy-related deaths per 100,000 live births;PRMR)in China dropped from 51.3 in 2002 to 26.1 in 2011.A subnational analysis of 2852 Chinese counties between 1996 and 2015 has demonstrated that PRMR has declined from 108.7 in 1996 to 21.8 in 2015,with an annualized rate of decline of 8.5%per year.[1]According to the 2018 National Medical Service and Quality Safety Report,the PRMR in 2018 was 18.3 per 100,000 live *** contrast,the PRMR in United States was 17.2 per 100,000 live births between 2011 and 2015.[2]

Energy is the focus of the “Belt and Road” Cooperation and the main battlefield for carbon peak and carbon neutrality. With the implementation of the “dual carbon” strategic goals, energy will inevitably develop towards lowcarbon development at an accelerated pace. On the basis of elaborating on the connotation of the “dual carbon goals”, this paper studies and analyzes the challenges in the process of the low-carbon energy development under the “Belt and Road Initiative”, makes an in-depth analysis of the factors that restrict the low-carbon energy development under the “Belt and Road Initiative”, and puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions accordingly.

Prospects of China's Petroleum Refining and Petrochemical Industry under “Dual Carbon” goals

The essence of achieving“carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”,that is,China’s“dual carbon”goals as unveiled by a guiding document on the country’s work by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council,lies in accelerating the transition from fossil energy consumption to non-fossil energy *** petroleum refining and petrochemical industry,as one of the industries with the highest level of carbon emissions in China’s industrial system,faces enormous challenges as *** this regard,refineries and petrochemical manufacturers have to propose and implement even more effective strategies and measures to reduce carbon emissions against the background of the“dual carbon”*** focuses will be put on strengthening energy management during production,speeding up industrial adjustment and transformation,accelerating the recycling of multiple resources including waste plastics,and developing innovative petrochemical processes,with a view to enabling gradual replacement of new energy and vigorously developing *** are to usher in an era of great change,and contribute to the realization of China’s goals in carbon dioxide emission peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

Review of Problems of Adolescent Sexual Behavior and the Role of Millennium Development goals 4, 5 and 6 in Nigeria

Introduction: The problems of adolescents’ sexual behavior are grave and far-reaching. Methods: Review of exiting literature via Google scholar, AJOL, Pubmed, HINARI and other relevant data bases on the common problems of adolescents’ inappropriate sexual behavior. Result: Adolescent sexual behavior could result in adolescent pregnancy which prevalence varies widely throughout Nigeria perhaps due to differences in culture and development. Abortion, the willful termination of pregnancy is another problem which is often undertaken for pregnancies resulting from incest and sexual abuse. Also common is trans-generational sex which occurs when an adolescent has non-marital sex in the last 12 months with a man who is at least 10 years older than her. Also related to this, is transactional sex found in both committed and casual relationships. It is not always done for survival because in some cultures, sex for favor is carried out for reasons other than subsistence. Furthermore, multiple sexual partners are the engagement in sex with more than one partner over a particular time frame. It may be sequential or concurrent. The high prevalence of these problems in Nigeria raises a question of the possibility of achieving the millennium development goals (MDGs) 4, 5 and 6 specifically targeted at reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases respectively. Conclusion: Policies and strategies such as family life and HIV/AIDs education (FLHE) curriculum on adolescent reproductive health should be pursued with greater vigor in our secondary schools in addition to establishing HIV counseling centers and vocational training programs for out-of-school adolescents. WHO support and commitment to key action areas for countries and member states will build and strengthen their capacity to improve reproductive and sexual health.
