The divergence three-dimensional millet-seed body model and the continuous distributing layer-imitating model were introduced, which were used to express geologic body, and the procedure of generating these two models and their merits and demerits were synthesized. Three methods of geologic body’s three-dimensional expression were separately introduced, and the merits of the continuous distributing layer imitating model were proposed as comparing with the divergence three-dimensional millet-seed body model. The three-dimensional cubes were observed from any direction and any tangle with the application of dealing methods such as peeling, hollowing out, transparent or half-transparent.

Monitoring of injected CO_(2) at two commercial geologic storage sites with significant pressure depletion and/or re-pressurization histories: A case study

Majority of geologic CO_(2) storage sites for currently operated large-scale integrated carbon capture and storage projects(LSIPs)in operation around the world are depleted oil fields that have been undergone significant depletion and re-pressurization prior to injection of captured CO_(2).A better understanding of any of the implications associated with past depletion and re-pressurization histories to“out of injection zone”migration of injected CO_(2) can help in making monitoring strategies significantly more effective.Being the geologic CO_(2) storage demonstration sites for two most active LSIPs in the US,the West Hastings and the Bell Creek Oil Fields are the main focus of present study.The monitoring technologies that have been used/deployed/tested at both the normally pressured West Hastings and the subnormally pressured Bell Creek storage sites appear to adequately address any of the potential“out of zone migration”of injected CO_(2) at these sites.It would be interesting to see if any of the collected monitoring data at the West Hastings and the Bell Creek storage sites could also be used in future to better understand the viability of initially subnormally pressured and subsequently depleted and re-pressurized oil fields as secure geologic CO_(2) storage sites with relatively large storage CO_(2) capacities compared to the depleted and re-pressurized oil fields that were initially discovered as normally pressured.

A better knowledge of theformation and development of the loess deposits in China has been obtained through analysis and correlationof lithostratigraphy. biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy. climatostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy.

Aiming at the shortage of hydroelectric engineering geological logging methods on high side slope and big gallery, the photographic methods based on digital camera were studied. By integrating the application of technology of close range photogrammetry, digital image processing and GIS, the photographic geological logging information system was developed. The system has the functions of digital photography, orthophotoquad making, image mosaicking, logging factors extracting and measuring, CAD mapping, etc. The methods achieve more efficient and higher precision than the regular, and it provides a new way for the hydroelectric engineering geologic logging.

A Preliminary Analysis of geologic & Seismologic Conditions for an Undersea Tunnel across the Taiwan Strait

The Taiwan Strait tunnel, as a great project, has been studied for a long time and met many challenges from the beginning of the feasibility study that has attracted attention among scientists and engineers on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and around the world as well. The key question is whether this undersea tunnel can be constructed with present technologies under such complex geologic and seismologic conditions. Results of current researches indicate that the sea floor of the Strait is covered with a horizontal layer composed of both the Pleistocene and the Holocene sandstone and shale with a thickness of about 200～300 m, without any large fault belt or fold.This can serve as a good bearing and impermeable layer for constructing such an undersea tunnel. The Penghu Islands and Penghu terrace, which are composed of hard basaltic rock over a wide area of 70 km (NS)×40 km (EW), might be connected each othar by a bridge instead of an undersea tunnel, and serve as a construction site. Although there are several geologic units separated by faults under the upper horizontal layer, these faults do not cut through the upper layer. Only the NE offshore fault along the Fujian coast and that along the west coast of Taiwan should be noticed, between which a suspension tunnel instead of an undersea tunnel can be constructed. Therefore it is judged that the tunnel beginning from Amoy, through the Jinmen Island and the Penghu Islands to the Peigang harbour is worth recommendation.
