ArcFVS:An integration of a geographic Information System and Forest Vegetation Simulator

This paper presents the design and implementation of an integrated application program called ArcFVS that links the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) and a geographic Information System (GIS) to realize spatial selection of input files and graphic display of modeling output. Data for testing and running the model came from the U.S. Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Database and were also collected in field surveys in north-central Indiana. ArcFVS 1.0 is designed using the ArcGIS software from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) and the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming environment to manipulate ESRI's ArcObjects. The resulting product offers custom functions as commands in a new menu or as tools on a new toolbar. They are used to: select spatially or by attribute the forest plots to be projected by FVS, create the FVS input files for the selected plots and display in a geospatial environment different types of FVS output (text output files, tables with variables of interest and visualization image files). Advantages of ArcFVS 1.0 include the new GIS capabilities, enhanced format translation functions and the standardized programming environment.

We quantified theδ^13C andδ^15N values in the lower beaks of Humboldt squid,Dosidicus gigas,collected from international waters off Costa Rica,Ecuador,Peru and Chile by Chinese squid jigging vessels during 2009,2010 and 2013.There was a significant difference in the isotopic values among regions with the lowest value off Ecuador and the highest off Chile,which were interpreted as a function of trophic effects as well as baseline values.However,constant trophic level of D.gigas across its geographic range showed that spatial variation in the baseline of primary production is the main driver responsible for the observed geographic isotope variability.Inter-regional difference and intra-regional convergence of isotope values indicated squid off Costa Rica,Ecuador and Chile belong to different geographically segregated populations,which were previously proved by integrated population identifying method.In contrast,the higher variations inδ^13C andδ^15N values in a given size group suggest the squid off Peru move and forage in different places.Moreover,potential population exchange could be responsible for the overlap of the isotope values between the squid off Peru and off Chile.On the whole,the spatial difference in isotopic values of Humboldt squid beaks improves our understanding of potential geographic population connectivity and movement.

We performed a meta-analysis on over 100 studies applying remote sensing(RS)and geographic information systems(GIS)to understand treeline dynamics.A literature search was performed in multiple online databases,including Web of Knowledge(Thomson Reuters),Scopus(Elsevier),BASE(Bielefeld Academic Search Engine),CAB Direct,and Google Scholar using treeline-related queries.We found that RS and GIS use has steadily increased in treeline studies since 2000.Spatialresolution RS and satellite imaging techniques varied from low-resolution MODIS,moderate-resolution Landsat,to high-resolution WorldView and aerial orthophotos.Most papers published in the 1990s used low to moderate resolution sensors such as Landsat Multispectral Scanner and Thematic Mapper,or SPOT PAN(Panchromatic)and MX(Multispectral)RS images.Subsequently,we observed a rise in high-resolution satellite sensors such as ALOS,GeoEye,IKONOS,and WorldView for mapping current and potential treelines.Furthermore,we noticed a shift in emphasis of treeline studies over time:earlier reports focused on mapping treeline positions,whereas RS and GIS are now used to determine the factors that control treeline variation.

As background knowledge of geographic information retrieval (GIR),the gazetteers have their limitations. In this paper we propose to develop and implement a com-mon sense geographic knowledge base (CSGKB) instead of the gazetteers. We define that CSGKB is concerned with the representation of geographic knowledge in human brain and the simulation of geographic reasoning in daily life. Traditional geographic information system (GIS) is based on the model of map with its data based on geographic coordinates and its computation based on geometry. However,CSGKB,which is made up of geographic features and relationships and is based on qualitative spatio-temporal reasoning,can be viewed as the direct model of geographic world. This paper also discusses the characters of CSGKB and pre-sents its structure which is composed of knowledge base,inference engine,geo-graphic ontology and learner. The applications using CSGKB include geographic information retrieval (GIR),natural language processing (NLP),named entity rec-ognition (NER),Semantic Web,etc. At present,our work focuses on the design of geographic ontology and the implementation of the CSGKB knowledge base. In this paper we describe the CSGKB ontology structure,top ontology,geographic loca-tion ontology,spatial relationship ontology,and domain ontologies. Finally,we in-troduce the current state of implementation of CSGKB and give an outlook on our future researches.

Influence of geographic, knowledge and behavioral factors on Opisthorchis viverrini infection in the Northeast of Thailand

Objective:To determine the influence of geographic,knowledge and behavioral factors on Opisthorchis(O.)viverrini infection in the Northeast of Thailand.Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted by using four datasets of years 2016 and 2017.Generalized linear mixed model was employed to analyze association between geographic,knowledge and behavioral factors and O.viverrini infection.Results:Totally there were 1885 participants.The prevalence of O.viverrini infection was 10.03%.geographic factors that showed statistically significant association with O.viverrini infection in the Northeast region were featured by at least a dam and reservoir(Adj.OR=4.21,95%CI:2.49-7.13,P50 dogs and cats per village(Adj.OR=3.40,95%CI:2.17-5.31,P50%of its areas(Adj.OR=1.91,95%CI:1.04-4.01,P=0.036),as well as low to moderate levels of knowledge(Adj.OR=1.60,95%CI:1.32 to 1.94,Pgeographic and demographic factors,knowledge,and consumption behaviors of raw fish products are significantly associated with O.viverrini infection.

Objective:To explore the spatial accumulation of diseases andtheir aggravating factors are essential in all public health.This study attempts to use geographic information system(GIS)to provide more information about the incidence and future of anthrax.Methods:Patients were diagnosed with anthrax in Kurdistan Province from 2009 to 2016.Data was then exported into ArcGIS software version 9 and the required layers for years and areas were added.Final map for each year was drawn up,pointing out the hot spots and predicting its future pattern.Results:Most cases were reported in females(57 cases,54.80%),and the lower body limbs were most affected(63 cases,60.57%).The highest numbers of incidences were related to the cities of Marivan,Saqez and Divandareh,with more concentration in the central parts of the province,rather than borderline areas.The highest percentage of the probable incidence of the disease was in Sanandaj(57.74%)with a potential susceptible area of 1729.12 km2 and then in Saqez(54.36%)with a potential area of 2422.4 km2.Conclusions:A vast area of Kurdistan Province is high risk for new cases of anthrax.Therefore,it is important to scale up the surveillance system in the province.

On the basis of the data of provenance test for 10 years in the total natural rangc of Larix olgensis from10 seeds collection sitcs, the geographie variation patterns have been made by means of canonical correlation analysis; (1)The basic variation patterns of growth characters is in vertical grudual change along the elevation gradient as principal, andgradual change along the latitude as supplement. (2) The Xiaobehu provenance with low elevation and low equivalent latitude is the good gene resource center of L. olgensis It has the genetic characters of rapid growth, high stability and finetimber quality. (3) The synthetical interaction between water and heat factors is the major factor to produce the variation ofL. olgensis and the tempcrayurc is the principal one. (4) Among the genetic variations of geographic population characters,the variation of growth is the most obvious one, and it could be taken as the main character for provenance division. (5) Byallocating the secds from the low equivalent latitude region to the northem suitable afforestation areas, the greater geneticgain could be obtained.

Background:The human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(HIV/AIDS)epidemic is a typical global health concern.The impact of HIV/AIDS is global,and we cannot effectively solve the problem without a global effort.In this study,we report our research on global HIV/AIDS control with an innovative fourdimensional approach.Methods:Countries(n=148)with data available on area size,total population,and the total number of persons living with HIV(PLWH)were included.The HIV epidemic across the globe was described using 4 indicators,including the total count,population-based P rate,geographic area-based G rate,and population and geographic area-based PG rate.Results:A total of 35,426,911 PLWH were included,with a global prevalence rate of 0.51 per 1,000 population.The total PLWH count provided data on resource allocation in individual countries to improve HIV/AIDS care;and the top five countries with the highest PLWH counts were South Africa(7,000),Nigeria(3,500),India(2,100),Kenya(1,500),and Mozambique(1,500).The other three indicators provide a measure to assess the global risk profile of HIV transmission and to provide information on HIV/AIDS prevention strategies.The top five countries with the highest P rates(per 1,000 persons)were Swaziland(170.9),Botswana(154.7),Lesotho(145.2),South Africa(127.4),and Zimbabwe(89.7);the top five countries with the highest G rates(per 100 km2)were Swaziland(1,279.1),Malawi(1,039.5),Lesotho(1,021.1),Rwanda(810.7),and Uganda(748.1);and the top five countries with highest PG rates(per 1,000,000 persons per 100 km2)were Barbados(2,127.9),Swaziland(993.8),Lesotho(478.3),Malta(375.0),and Mauritius(319.7).With PG rate,we detected countries in two hotspots(south and middle Africa and the Caribbean region)and one belt across the Euro-Asian region with high risks of HIV transmission.Conclusions:This study expanded the conventional measures by adding two new indicators,thus forming a new four-dimensional framework to quantify the global HIV epidemic.In addition to gaining a b
