A compilation of new advances made in the research?eld of laboratory reaction kinetics in China’s Key Development Project for Air Pollution Formation Mechanism and Control Technologies was *** advances are grouped into six broad,interrelated categories,including volatile organic compound(VOC)oxidation,secondary organic aerosol(SOA)formation,new particle formation(NPF)and gas-particle partitioning,ozone chemistry,model parameters,and secondary inorganic aerosol(SIA)formation,highlighting the laboratory work done by Chinese *** smog chamber applications,the current knowledge gained from laboratory studies is reviewed,with emphasis on summarizing the oxidation mechanisms of long-chain alkanes,aromatics,alkenes,aldehydes/ketones in the atmosphere,SOA formation from anthropogenic emission sources,and oxidation of aromatics,isoprene,and limonene,as well as SIA ***?ow tube applications,atmospheric oxidation mechanisms of toluene and methacrolein,SOA formation from limonene oxidation by ozone,gas-particle partitioning of peroxides,and sulfuric acid-water(H2SO4-H2O)binary nucleation,methanesulfonic acid-water(MSA-H2O)binary nucleation,and sulfuric acid-ammonia-water(H2SO4-NH3-H2O)ternary nucleation are discussed.

Insights into measurements of water-soluble ions in PM_(2.5)and their gaseous precursors in Beijing

To better understand the characteristics and transformation mechanisms of secondary inorganic aerosols,hourly mass concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions(WSIIs)in PM_(2.5)and their gaseous precursors were measured online from 2016 to 2018 at an urban site in *** and diurnal variations in water-soluble ions and gaseous precursors were discussed and their gas-particle conversion and partitioning were also examined,some related parameters were ***(TNH_(3))Rich was also defined to describe the variations of the excess NH_(3)in different *** addition,a sensitivity test was carried out by using ISORROPIA II to outline the driving factors of gas-particle *** Beijing,the relative contribution of nitrate to PM_(2.5)has increased markedly in recent years,especially under polluted *** the four seasons,only a small portion of NO_(2)in the atmosphere was converted into total nitrate(TNO_(3)),and more than 80%of TNO_(3)occurred in the form of nitrate due to the abundant *** concentration of total ammonia(TNH_(3))was much higher than that required to neutralize acid gases,and most of the TNH_(3)occurred as gaseous NH_(3).The nitrous acid(HONO)concentration was highly correlated with NH_(3)concentration and had increased significantly in Beijing compared with previous *** total chloride(TCl)was the highest in winter,andε(Cl^(-))was more sensitive to variations in the ambient temperature(T)and relative humidity(RH)thanε(NO_(3)^(-)).

The atmospheric concentrations and gas-particle partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons（PAHs） were determined in the tropical region of southern Taiwan. The concentrations of total suspended particulates（TSP） and total PAH（t-PAH;gas+particulate） ranged from 1.6 to 78.8 μg m-3 and 400 to 4400 pg m-3, respectively. A seasonal variability in t-PAH concentrations was observed, with the highest levels of particle-associated PAHs found in winter/cold season. Diagnostic ratios showed that PAHs in the atmosphere predominantly come from vehicle emissions and biomass burning. The result of principal component analysis（PCA） indicated that due to long-range transport, PAHs in the southern Taiwan may originate from neighboring areas, such as the Kaohsiung metropolis during wintertime. In all samples, gas-particle partition coefficients（K p） of PAHs correlated with sub-cooled liquid vapor pressures（P o L） and octanol-air partition coefficients（K oa）. The regression slopes of log K p versus log P o L of all the sample were greater than-0.6, which was shallower than other studies conducted in temperate and subtropical zones, and reflected a non-exchangeable PAH fraction in the aerosols, likely associated to the soot carbon phase. This phenomenon might be caused by the significant photolysis of gaseous PAHs by light intensity in tropic southern Taiwan and the slow depuration of particulate phase. Experimental gas-particle partition coefficients（K p） were compared to the predictions of octanol-air（K oa） and soot-air（K sa） partition coefficient models, showing that both K oa and K sa models underestimated the K p values in this study. The preliminary observation of gas-particle partitioning of PAHs indicates the presence of a strong absorbent in the atmospheric aerosol, most likely soot carbon, in the tropic southern Taiwan.
