Impact of earthquake-induced landslide on the habitat suitability of giant panda in Wolong,China

Massive geological landslides and unstable landslide areas were triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. These landslides caused deaths, damaged infrastructure and threatened endanger species. This study analyzed the impact of landslides on giant pandas and their habitats from the following aspects: threatening pandas‘ lives, damaging pandas‘ habitat, influencing giant panda behavior, increasing habitat fragmentation; the final aspect, and blocking gene flow by cutting off corridors. A habitat suitability map was created by integrating the landslide factors with other traditional factors based on a logistics regression method. According to the landslide inventory map, there are 1313 landslides, 818 rock debris flows, 117 rock avalanches and 43 mud flows occurred in the study area. A correlation analysis indicated that landslides caused the pandas to migrate, and the core landslides within 1 km2 had greater influence on panda migration. These core landslides primarily occurred in mid-altitude regionscharacterized by high slopes, old geological ages, large areas and large rock mass volumes. The habitat suitability assessment results for the Wolong Natural Reserve had better prediction performance(80.9%) and demonstrated that 14.5%, 15.9%, 20.5%, 47.6% and 1.5% of the study area can be classified as very high, high, moderate, low and very low giant panda suitability areas, respectively. This study can be used to inform panda and panda habitat research, management and protection during post-quake reconstruction and recovery periods in China.

Quantifying landscape linkages among giant panda subpopulations in regional scale conservation

Understanding habitat requirements and identifying landscape linkages are essential for the survival of isolated populations of endangered ***,some of the giant panda populations are isolated,which threatens their long-term survival,particularly in the Xiaoxiangling *** the present study,we quantified niche requirements and then identified potential linkages of giant panda subpopulations in the most isolated region,using ecological niche factor analysis and a least-cost path *** pandas preferred habitat with conifer forest and gentle slopes(>20 to≤30°).Based on spatial distribution of suitable habitat,linkages were identified for the Yele subpopulation to 4 other subpopulations(Liziping,Matou,Xinmin and Wanba).Their lengths ranged from 15 to 54 *** accumulated cost ranged from 693 to 3166 and conifer forest covered over 31%.However,a variety of features(*** roads,human settlements and large unforested areas)might act as barriers along the linkages for giant panda *** analysis quantified giant panda subpopulation connectivity to ensure long-term survival.

Evaluating Conservation Effectiveness of Nature Reserves Established for Surrogate Species:Case of a giant panda Nature Reserve in Qinling Mountains,China

Many nature reserves are established to protect the habitat needs of particular endangered species of interest but their effectiveness for protecting other species is *** this study,this effectiveness was evaluated in a nature reserve network located in the Qinling Mountains,Shaanxi Province,*** network of reserves was established mainly for the conservation of the giant panda,a species considered as a surrogate for the conservation of many other endangered species in the *** habitat suitability of nine protected species,including the giant panda,was modeled by using Maximum Entropy(MAXENT)and their spatial congruence was *** suitability of these species was also overlapped with nature reserve boundaries and their management zones(i.e.,core,buffer and experimental zones).Results show that in general the habitat of the giant panda constitutes a reasonable surrogate of the habitat of other protected species,and giant panda reserves protect a relatively high proportion of the habitat of other protected ***,giant panda habitat conservation also allows the conservation of the habitat of other protected species in the ***,a large area of suitable habitat was excluded from the nature reserve *** addition,four species exhibited a low proportion of highly suitable habitat inside the core zones of nature *** suggests that a high proportion of suitable habitat of protected species not targeted for conservation is located in the experimental and buffer zones,thus,is being affected by human *** increase their conservation effectiveness,nature reserves and their management zones need to be re-examined in order to include suitable habitat of more endangered *** procedures described in this study can be easily implemented for the conservation of many endangered species not only in China but in many other parts of the world.

Impacts of the Wenchuan Earthquake on the giant panda Nature Reserves in China

The Wenchuan Earthquake that occurred in May of 2008 caused damages to large areas of Sichuan,Gansu,and Shaanxi provinces in *** from local governments and related management agencies show that the giant panda nature reserves in the earthquake-hit areas were heavily *** estimates in this paper of the impacts of the earthquake on the giant panda in the earthquake-hit areas were made based on the interpretation of remote sensing images and information collected by field survey.A rapid assessment method was designed to estimate the damages of the earthquake on giant panda *** using visual interpretation methods,we decoded the remote sensing images of the disaster area in the 49 giant panda nature *** results showed that the Wenchuan Earthquake and the succeeding secondary geological disasters caused great damages to the giant panda nature reserves and disturbed the normal life of the giant pandas there (e.g.,landscape fragmentation increased significantly).Undoubtedly,the life of the giant pandas there was ***,although the earthquake caused certain impacts on the giant pandas,it did not really threat their *** so,we still strongly advocate for protection of the giant pandas,and have prioritized a couple of measures to be taken to restore the giant panda nature reserves in the earthquake-hit areas.

Distinctive diet-tissue isotopic discrimination factors derived from the exclusive bamboo-eating giant panda

Stable isotope analysis is very useful in animal ecology,especially in diet reconstruction and trophic *** in isotope ratios between consumers and their diet,termed discrimination factors,are essential for studies of stable isotope ecology and are species-specific and *** the specialized bamboo diet and clear foraging behavior,here,we calculated discrimination factors for carbon and nitrogen isotopes from diet to tissues(tooth enamel,hair keratin and bone collagen)for the giant panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca),a species derived from meat-eating *** results showed that carbon discrimination factor obtained from giant panda tooth enamel(ε^(13)C_(diet-enamel)=10.0‰)and nitrogen discrimination factors from hair keratin(Δ^(15)N_(diet-hair)=2.2‰)and bone collagen(Δ^(15)N_(diet-collagen)=2.3‰)were lower,and carbon discrimination factors from hair keratin(Δ^(13)C_(diet-hair)=5.0‰)and bone collagen(Δ13Cdiet-collagen=6.1‰)were higher than those of other mammalian carnivores,omnivores and *** distinctive values are likely the result of a low-nutrient and specialized bamboo diet,carnivore-like digestive system and exceptionally low metabolism in giant pandas.

Functional annotation from the genome sequence of the giant panda

The giant panda is one of the most critically endangered species due to the fragmentation and loss of its *** the functions of proteins in this animal,especially specific trait-related proteins,is therefore necessary to protect the *** this work,the functions of these proteins were investigated using the genome sequence of the giant *** on 21,001 proteins and their functions were stored in the giant panda Protein Database,in which the proteins were divided into two groups:20,179 proteins whose functions can be predicted by GeneScan formed the known-function group,whereas 822 proteins whose functions cannot be predicted by GeneScan comprised the unknown-function *** the known-function group,we further classified the proteins by molecular function,biological process,cellular component,and tissue *** the unknown-function group,we developed a strategy in which the proteins were filtered by cross-Blast to identify panda-specific proteins under the assumption that proteins related to the panda-specific traits in the unknown-function group *** this filtering procedure,we identified 32 proteins(2 of which are membrane proteins)specific to the giant panda genome as compared against the dog and horse *** on their amino acid sequences,these 32 proteins were further analyzed by functional classification using SVM-Prot,motif prediction using MyHits,and interacting protein prediction using the Database of Interacting *** proteins were predicted to be zinc-binding proteins,thus affecting the activities of nucleic *** 32 panda-specific proteins will be further investigated by structural and functional analysis.

Transcriptome sequencing of black and white hair follicles in the giant panda

With the completion of the draft assembly of the giant panda genome sequence,RNA sequencing technology has been widely used in genetic research on giant *** used RNA-seq to examine black and white hair follicle samples from adult *** comparison with the giant panda genome,75963 SNP loci were labeled,2426 differentially expressed genes(DEGs)were identiﬁed,and 2029 new genes were discovered,among which 631 were functionally annotated.A cluster analysis of the DEGs showed that they were mainly related to the Wnt signaling pathway,ECM–receptor interaction,the p53 signaling pathway,and ribosome *** enrichment results showed that there were signiﬁcant differences in the regulatory networks of hair follicles with different colors during the transitional stage of hair follicle resting growth,which may play a regulatory role in melanin synthesis during *** conclusion,our results provide new insights and more data support for research on the color formation in giant pandas.

The Lushan earthquake and the giant panda:impacts and conservation

Earthquakes not only result in a great loss of human life and property,but also have profound effects on the Earth’s *** Lushan earthquake occurred on 20 Apr 2013,with a magnitude of 7.0 and an intensity of 9.0 degrees.A distance of 17.0 km from its epicenter to the nearest distribution site of giant pandas recorded in the Third National Survey was *** use of research on the Wenchuan earthquake(with a magnitude of 8.0),which occurred approximately 5 years ago,we briefly analyze the impacts of the Lushan earthquake on giant pandas and their *** earthquake may interrupt ongoing behaviors of giant pandas and may also cause injury or *** addition,an earthquake can damage conservation facilities for pandas,and result in further habitat fragmentation and ***,from a historical point of view,the impacts of human activities on giant pandas and their habitat may,in fact,far outweigh those of natural disasters such as *** taken to promote habitat restoration and conservation network reconstruction in earthquake-affected areas should be based on requirements of giant pandas,not those of humans.

Baylisascaris schroederi,a roundworm(ascaridoid)parasite specific to the bamboofeeding giant panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca),represents a leading cause of mortality in wild giant panda ***,we present a 293-megabase chromosome-level genome assembly of *** to infer its biology,including host *** genomics revealed an evolutionary trajectory accompanied by host-shift events in ascaridoid parasite lineages after host separations,suggesting their potential for transmission and rapid adaptation to new *** and anatomical lines of evidence,including expansion and positive selection of genes related to the cuticle and basal metabolisms,indicate that *** undergoes specific adaptations to survive in the sharp-edged bamboo-enriched gut of giant pandas by structurally increasing its cuticle thickness and efficiently utilizing host nutrients through gut ***,we characterized the secretome of *** and predicted potential drug and vaccine targets for new control ***,this genome resource provides new insights into the host adaptation of *** to the giant panda as well as the host-shift events in ascaridoid parasite *** findings on the unique biology of *** will also aid in the development of prevention and treatment measures to protect giant panda populations from roundworm parasitism.
