This paper provides a method for studying the penny-shaped cracksconfiguration in functionally graded material(FGM)structuressubjected to dynamic or steady loading. It is assumed that the FGMare transversely isotropic and all the material properties onlydepend on the axial coordi- nate z. In the analysis, the elasticregion is treated as a number of layers. The material properties aretaken to be constants for each layer. By utilizing the Laplacetransform and Hankel transform tech- nique, the general solution forthe layers are derived.

A comprehensive treatment of fracture of functionally gradedmaterials (FGMs) is provided. It is assumed that the materialproperties depend only on the coordinate perpendicular to the cracksurface And vary continuously along the crack faces. By using alaminated composite plate model to simulate the ma- Terialnon-homogeneity, an algorithm for solving the system based on Laplacetransform and Fourier transform Techniques is presented. Unlikeearlier studies that considered certain assumed propertydistributions and a Single crack problem, the current investigationstudies multiple crack problem in the FGMs with arbitrarily Varyingmaterial properties. Transient thermal stresses are presented.

The thermal and thermo-elastic-plastic response of newly developed ceramic-metal functionally graded materials under a thermal shock load is studied. The materials are heated at the ceramic surface with a sudden high-intensity heat flux input, and cooled at the metal surface with a flowing liquid nitrogen. Emphasis is placed on two aspects: (1) the influence of the graded composition of the materials on the temperature and stress response; and (2) the optimum design of the graded composition from a unified viewpoint of the heat insulation property and stress relaxation property. Moreover, a comparison between the thermoelastic stress and the thermo-elastic-plastic stress is also made to indicate the plasticity effect.

The hybrid functionally graded materials(FGM) of hydroxyapatite(HA), stainless steel 316L(SS316L) and carbon nanotubes(CNT) were synthesized for biomedical implants. Three different types of FGM were produced by the combination of SS316 L and CNT to reinforce HA in discrete layers of FGM. In the first type of FGM, concentration of SS316 L was varied from 10% to 40%(mass fraction) with an increment of 10% to reinforce micro HA. In the second type of FGM, 0.5%(mass fraction) functionalized CNT was added by maintaining the rest of composition as that of the first type of FGM. In the third type of FGM, mixture of micro and nano HA(mass ratio1:1) was used, keeping rest of composition similar to the second type of FGM. All types of FGM were subjected to uniaxial compaction and sintered by pressureless sintering technique at similar compaction and sintering parameters. The results show that the densification is enhanced with the addition of CNT and nanocrystalline HA in the FGM. Hardness and fracture toughness increase in both FGM reinforced with CNT, but the increase of the hardness and fracture toughness are more pronounced in FGM with micro and nanocrystalline HA.

The main interest of this study is a new method to solve the axisymmetric contact problem of functionally graded materials （FGMs） coated. Based on the fact that an arbitrary curve can be approached by a series of continuous but piecewise linear curves, this model divided the FGMs into a series of sub-layers with shear modulus varying linearly in each sub-layers and continuous on the sub-interfaces. With the model, the axisymmetric contact problem of a functionally graded coated half-space is investigated. By using the transfer matrix method and Hankel integral transform technique, the problem is reduced to a Cauchy singular integral equation. The contact pressure, contact region and indentation are calculated for various indenters by solving the equations numerically.

High-temperature tribological performance of functionally graded Stellite 6/WC metal matrix composite coatings manufactured by laser-directed energy deposition

Background, Motivation and Objective In recent years, composites with continuous change of physical properties called functionally graded materials(FGM) have been increasingly incorporated in different fields of technology, such as defense, aerospace and automobile industries, etc. Reliable methods are needed to non-destructively measure the material properties of FGMs. It is important to have a fast and cheap technique for evaluating the FGM after fabrication and in service to verify that the actual material properties match those of design. But due to the composition and properties of the FGM along the gradient change, the conventional test methods cannot be used to evaluate the performance of FGM and there is no uniform evaluation standards. So it is particularly important to choose suitable detection means for FGM and establish unified evaluation systems. Using ultrasonial guided wave dispersion characteristics, an inverse method based on a multiple input multiple output fuzzy logic controller designed by genetic algorithm is presented to determine the material properties of functionally graded materials. Statement of Contribution/Methods In this paper, a FLC procedure designed by GA is applied to characterize the material properties of FGM. The input data used for this inverse procedure are group velocities. The outputs of the FLC would be the distribution function of the FGM volume fraction. In the designing of multivariable fuzzy controller, there are some problems such as high dimensions of rule base, the difficulties of the obtaining of membership function and rule base. Therefore, a new hierarchical fuzzy controller(NHFLC) is put forward. Fuzzy control strategies based on the control structure is obtained by genetic algorithm. It can be a very good combination of genetic algorithm and fuzzy logic, and the designed fuzzy controller can be applied to characterize the material properties of FGMs. Results According to the requirement of the multiple input mult

This study proposes an effective method to enhance the accuracy of the Differential Quadrature Method(DQM)for calculating the dynamic characteristics of functionally graded beams by improving the form of discrete node ***,based on the first-order shear deformation theory,the governing equation of free vibration of a functionally graded beam is transformed into the eigenvalue problem of ordinary differential equations with respect to beam axial displacement,transverse displacement,and cross-sectional rotation angle by considering the effects of shear deformation and rotational inertia of the beam ***,ignoring the shear deformation of the beam section and only considering the effect of the rotational inertia of the section,the governing equation of the beam is transformed into the eigenvalue problem of ordinary differential equations with respect to beam transverse *** on the differential quadrature method theory,the eigenvalue problem of ordinary differential equations is transformed into the eigenvalue problem of standard generalized algebraic ***,the first several natural frequencies of the beam can be *** feasibility and accuracy of the improved DQM are verified using the finite element method(FEM)and combined with the results of relevant literature.
