Hydroxyapatite composites with carbon allotropes:Preparation,properties,and applications

Hydroxyapatite(HA)and its composites with inorganic additives,dopants,and polymers is a rapidly developing branch in the materials chemistry.In particular,carbon allotropes are widely used in these composites being widely applied for medical purposes.Observing a gap of insufficient generalization of recent achievements in the field of the HA/Carbon composites,in this review we present the state of the art of the field of HA composites and hybrids with classic carbon allotropes and nanocarbons.These composites are known for carbon nanotubes,nanofibers,graphene and its oxidized forms,as well as,in a lesser grade,for graphite,fullerenes,nanodiamonds,carbon nanofoams,etc.These composites can be fabricated by a variety of classic and less-common methods,such as co-precipitation(with or without ultrasonic treatment),CVD,hot isostatic pressing,hydrothermal,spark plasma sintering,biomimetic mineralization,thermal and plasma spray,electrochemical and electrophoretic deposition,self-assembling,3D printing,electrospinning,and lyophilisation,among others.Combination of various synthesis techniques can be also carried out for composite preparation.Natural or synthetic HA can be used as it is for further interaction with carbon allotropes or it can be first prepared and then reacted with carbon counterpart;similarly,carbon allotropes can be introduced into the interaction with HA directly or they can be first synthesized,in particular from biomass.Resulting biocompatible composites can be produced in the form of coatings,powders,and scaffolds and can additionally contain quantitative amounts of third phases,frequently natural or synthetic polymers.In these composites,especially with O-containing functionalizing groups,HA disadvantages could be considerably decreased with simultaneous enhancement of mechanical properties,becoming similar to human bone,chemical stability and biocompatibility,as well as possessing antibacterial effect.GO→G reduction and higher HA decoration were observed in several experiments.The morphology of p

Onion-like fullerenes synthesized by arc discharge in water were used as support of Pt nanoparticles as electrocatalytic materials for direct methanol fuel cell. Uniform platinum nanoparticles with the average diameter of about 4.3 nm were well dispersed on the surface of onion-like fullerenes by impregnation-reduction method. The morphologies and microstructures of the as-prepared composites were studied by means of XRD and TEM. Electrochemical analysis shows that this kind of nano material may be an excellent candidate to be used as the support of catalyst for methanol electrochemical oxidation.

New Solution Method of Pi-Orbital Axis Vector and Its Applications in fullerenes and Carbon Nanotubes

A new solution method to perform the pi-orbital axis vector analysis was developed in this paper. The model of circular cone was built and the solution equations of the pyramidalization angle were obtained based on the model and the space analytic geometry. Our method merely requires the atomic coordinates of the conjugated central atom and the three attached atoms. Moreover, systematic calculations on the pyramidalization angles of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes were performed using the method we developed. The relationship of pyramidalization angle and the stability for the carbon cages and tubes was also discussed.

The structure of pure C60/stearic-acid LB films and phase transformation during dipping pro-cess have been studied by using UV,IR and TEM techniques.The tribological properties of C60/C70 LB filmsand C60/C70/behenic-acid LB films have been investigated.During compressing pure C60/stearic-acid Langmuirfilms gradually transformed from amorphous to microcrystals.Compared with the spectra of pure C60,newpeaks of the spectra of C60/stearic-acid LB films are produced,and the absorbing band of —OH disappears.Due to the contribution of C60 in the LB films to their wear resistance,their wear life is greatly increased.

Determination of fullerenes (C60/C70) from the Permian-Triassic Boundary in the Meishan Section of South China

fullerenes (C 60 /C 70 ), clays and rocks near the Permian-Triassic (P/T) boundary in the Meishan section of South China are explored by means of comprehensive analytical techniques, including ultrasonic extraction with column purification, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of- flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS). The study confirms the existence of fullerenes toward the P/T event boundary and their absence in clays and limestones beyond the boundary. In particular, the white clay, known as the event boundary, contains fullerenes of 0.33 ppb, while the red material, as the first lamina fill of goethite and gypsum on the base of the white clay, contains fullerenes of 1.23 ppb, and the last lamina of 2.50 ppb. Significantly, distinct enrichment of fullerenes is coincident with the disappearance of fossil records of marine species (94%) just at the base of the white clay, implying that geological fullerenes would be one of temporal remnants led by the P/T catastrophic event. This work strongly supports that fullerenes would be one of significant records of the P/T catastrophic event but their origin remains to be studied further.

Electronic Structures and Conductivities of Fullerene C_(60) and Metal-containing fullerenes MC_(60) (M=Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs)

It has been reported recently that the solids KxC60 and RbxC60 （x=1→5） are conductors. If x=0 and 6, they are insulators, and if x=3, they have the largest conductivities. When the temperatures go down to 18K for solid KxC60 and 28K for solid RbxC60, they are transferred into superconductors. These results are very interesting. Solids KxC60 and RbxC60 are very unstable when being exposed to air, so for practical purposes, it had better be synthesized to the metal-containing fullerenes MC60 in which the metal atom M is at the center of C60.
