frost heaving is a well-known phenomenon in cold regions, which may occur in wet clayey grounds during winter. Railway track upheaval occurring in cold regions during the winter is generally understood as frost heaving in the subgrade layer. However, it has been confirmed that upheaval due to frost heaving sometimes occurs in the ballast layer. This un- derstanding has been observed in active railways in northern Japan. The samples collected from ballast and subgrade layers have been examined for frost heave susceptibilities and confirmed that ballast layers which contain fines may heave.

New semi-analytical approach for ice lens heaving during artificial freezing of fine-grained material

The calculation of frost heaving with ice lens formation is still not standard for construction projects using artificial ground freezing(AGF).In fine-grained material,ice lenses may initiate and lead to significant heaving at the ground surface,which should be considered in ***,the complex processes during ice lens formation are still not fully understood and difficult to capture in a simple *** the past,the semi-analytical approach of Konrad and Morgenstern used one soil constant,the“segregation potential(SP)”.It has been mainly and most successfully applied to the heave calculation of natural-induced soil freezing in cold *** application to AGF has been so far *** solve this,a new semi-analytical approach is presented in this *** includes AGF conditions such as bottom-up freezing,temperature gradients to reach great freezing velocities,and a distinction between two freezing *** is the freezing-up state until a certain frost body thickness is reached(thermal transient state),and the other is a holding phase where the frost body thickness is kept constant(thermal quasi-steady state).To test its ability,the results are applied to another freezing direction,the top-down *** new approach is validated using two different frost-susceptible soils and,in total,50 frost heave *** the thermal transient region,where the SP is applicable,the two semi-analytical approaches are compared,showing improved performance of the current method by about 15%.

Experimental investigations of freezing soils at ground conditions of Astana, Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan regions is seasonal climatic with transient freezing of soil ground during the winter. Roadbed integrity is important to resist the sustained load transmitted by traffic on the road surface. Freezing of soil ground could significantly influence roadbed integrity in the seasonal freezing climate of Kazakhstan. The proper determination magnitude of frost heave and heaving pressure by the influence of freezing temperatures during the winter season are necessary for design and construction of highways. Thus, experimental tests were conducted on specimens obtained from Astana （Kazakhstan） to determine the freezing pressure and magnitude of frost heaving.

Railway subgrade thermal-hydro-mechanical behavior and track irregularity under the sunny-shady slopes effect in seasonal frozen regions

The sunny-shady slopes effect is a phenomenon that impacts the temperature distribution of high-speed railway subgrades,resulting in uneven frost heaving deformation on the subgrade surface,which in turn causes static irregularity in the slab *** on the hydraulics theory,a thermal-hydro-mechanical(THM)coupled model of frozen soil is established and *** explore the process and characteristics of the temperature field and deformation of soil during the freezing process of high-speed railway subgrades and analyze the track irregularity variation law of China Railway Track SystemⅢslab tracks under uneven frost heaving *** results show that,because the left and right slopes of high-speed railway subgrade are exposed to different amounts of solar radiation,which is the key factor causing uneven frost heaving of *** strike angles cause changes in temperature of the subgrade’s upper part and the frost heaving amount on the surface,leading to differences in the deformation of the slab track structure:Increased strike angle weakens the rail level irregularity of the down line and marginally increases the rail level irregularity of the up line,and these become consistent in north-south ***,when selecting railway lines in seasonal frozen areas,the west-east direction should be avoided to prevent the extremes in sunny-shady slopes effect on subgrades.

The project is located at Yichun in the northeast of Heilongjiang *** area belongs to mountain landform and middle low mountains etching *** climate belongs to continental monsoon climate and the change of four seasons is *** formation lithology,the types of frozen soil,the engineering geology condition and distributing situation of segregated frozen ground are studied by the investigation of frozen soil situation along the highway from Ergu tree farm to Liberation *** sections of layer are mainly pale red granite in Yanshan stage(γ52)and Variscanstage(γ43),the dash diluvia formation in Quaternary system and the slope diluvia formation in Quaternary *** frozen soil along the highway can be divided into two types that the seasonally frozen ground and segregated frozen *** engineering geology condition along the line is mainly roadbed,cultivated field and *** vegetation along the highway are mainly straw,cultivated field,forest(pinaster,birch and,short poling forest).The lithology is mainly embankment earth,decayed powder clay,middle fine sand and *** types of frozen soil are mainly full frozen soil,ice layer containing earth,rich frozen soil and frozen soil with much *** paper provides advices and countermeasures for the improvement of harmful geology condition of frozen soil ***,summary up the attention items of frozen soil construction and design.
