The aim of the present study is to investigate the brain functional network changes of patients with Frontal lobe epilepsy(FLE)by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging(rsfMRI)and graph theoretical analysis.rsfMRI is performed in 46 adult patients with FLE and 46 age matched healthy controls(HCs).A functional network is built from these subjects,and the topological properties of such network are analyzed quantitatively using graph theoretical methods.According to the results,both FLE patients and HCs exhibit prominent small world features.Compared with HCs,FLE shows a decrease in local efficiency(Eloc),clustering coefficient,nodal efficiency as well as nodal degree.Furthermore,FLE(seven)has fewer hubs than HCs(ten).The functional abnormalities in the network organization suggest functional disturbances in patients with FLE.This study helps to gain new insights into the functional disorder in patients with FLE.The networks built here can also be a set of potential biomarkers for the diagnosis,monitoring and the treatment of FLE.

This paper sets up a highly detailed finite element model of a car for Frontal crashworthiness applications, and then explains the characteristics of it. The geometry model is preprocessed by Hypermesh software. The finite element method solver program selected for the simulation is LS-DYNA. After the crash simulation is carefully analyzed, the Frontal crash experiment is aimed to validate the finite element model. The simulation results are basically in agreement with the experimental results. The validation of the finite element model is crucial for the further research in optimization of the automotive structure or lightweighting of the vehicle.

Seasonal prediction of East Asia(EA) summer rainfall, especially with a longer-lead time, is in great demand, but still very challenging. The present study aims to make long-lead prediction of EA subtropical Frontal rainfall(SFR) during early summer(May-June mean, MJ) by considering Arctic sea ice(ASI) variability as a new potential predictor. A MJ SFR index(SFRI), the leading principle component of the empirical orthogonal function(EOF) analysis applied to the MJ precipitation anomaly over EA, is defined as the predictand. Analysis of 38-year observations(1979-2016) revealed three physically consequential predictors. A stronger SFRI is preceded by dipolar ASI anomaly in the previous autumn, a sea level pressure(SLP) dipole in the Eurasian continent, and a sea surface temperature anomaly tripole pattern in the tropical Pacific in the previous winter. These precursors foreshadow an enhanced Okhotsk High, lower local SLP over EA, and a strengthened western Pacific subtropical high. These factors are controlling circulation features for a positive SFRI. A physical-empirical model was established to predict SFRI by combining the three predictors. Hindcasting was performed for the 1979-2016 period, which showed a hindcast prediction skill that was, unexpectedly, substantially higher than that of a four-dynamical models’ ensemble prediction for the 1979-2010 period(0.72 versus 0.47). Note that ASI variation is a new predictor compared with signals originating from the tropics to mid-latitudes. The long-lead hindcast skill was notably lower without the ASI signals included, implying the high practical value of ASI variation in terms of long-lead seasonal prediction of MJ EA rainfall.

Analysis of the CHRNA7 gene mutation and polymorphism in Southern Han Chinese patients with nocturnal Frontal epilepsy

Cumulative evidence suggests that practice has significantly dissociable influences on stimulus and response conflicts in the congruency tasks(such as the Stroop and color-word Flanker tasks). However, the effects of practice on stimulus and response conflicts in a typical Flanker task are unclear. To address this question, in the present study, behavioral and electroencephalography(EEG) data were recorded from twenty-nine healthy human participants while they were performing a 2:1(two targets are mapped into one response key) letter Flanker task in a practice design. Behavioral results show that response time(RT) significantly reduced with practice but neither the stimulus conflict nor the response conflict were reduced after practice. Brain oscillatory results are consistent with the RT patterns and show that(1) the Frontal theta(4–7 Hz, 0.52–0.82 s) activity significantly declined for each trial type after practice, which suggests the enhanced links between stimuli and responses after practice, and(2) the Frontal alpha(8–11 Hz, 0.52–0.82 s) activity was constant for both stimulus and response conflicts with practice, suggesting a stable mechanism of stimulus and response conflicts in the letter Flanker task. Altogether, these findings demonstrate stable behavioral and neural oscillatory characteristics of stimulus and response conflicts in a typical Flanker task.

Objective:To detect the CHRNA7 gene mutation and polymorphism in Southern Han Chinese patients with nocturnal Frontal lobe epilepsy(NFLE).Methods:Blood samples were collected from 215 Southern Han Chinese patients with NFLE and 200 healthy Southern Han Chinese control subjects.Genomic DNA was extracted,and CHRNA7 whole genome exons were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction and subjected to Sanger sequencing.Results:No CHRNA7 gene mutation was detected in all of the NFLE patients.However,five single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)in sporadic cases were found,located in exons 5,6.and 7 of the CHRNA7 gene.Among them,c.690G>A and c.698A>G are known SNPs,while c.370G>A,c.654C>T,and c.497-498delTG were newly discovered SNPs.These SNPs were also found in some of the healthy controls.Conclusions:No CHRNA7 gene mutation was identified in Southern Han Chinese patients with NFLE.The CHRNA7 gene is probably not responsible for NFLE in this population.

ACCORDING to the commission of InternationalLeague Against Epilepsy (ILAE) in 1989, typicalabsence seizures are generalized seizures,characterized by transient impairment of consciousness(TIC) and generalized >2.5 Hz spike and slowwave discharges in ictal EEG.1 Absence seizures with focalonset have been reported occasionally, such as Frontal,temporal or parieto-occipital origin.2-3 Lagae et al 4 identified asubgroup of children with absence epilepsy as Frontalabsence, whose ictal electroencephalograms (EEGs) showedgeneralized spike and slow wave preceded by Frontaldischarge. We presented four cases of Frontal absence,with one case of Frontal absence status epilepticus in them.The differences between typical and Frontal absenceseizures in clinical context and EEG were discussed.

Obese Adolescents with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Have Hippocampal and Frontal Lobe Volume Reductions

Objective:Severe Frontal comminuted depressed skull fractures needs special attention due to complications and esthetics.The optimal method of reconstruction and fixation of Frontal bone fragments remains a matter of discussion.We explored the advantages of reconstruction of Frontal bone with titanium clamps as soon as possible after trauma.Patients and methods:From May 2006 to September 2011 we performed 18craniotomies with titanium clamps to fix the cranial fragments.On the beginning of craniotomy,single window craniotomy(n=11)and two windows craniotomy(n=9)were designed.After dural closure and frontobasal reconstruction,these fragments were fixed with titanium clamps.A helical CT-scan was obtained after operation and a three dimensional technique was performed to evaluate the postoperative results.Results:The craniofix titanium clamp system was applied in 18 patients.No intraoperative and postoperative complications related to clamps were observed.The number of bone fragments ranged from 2 to 5(average 3.3 pieces)while the number of clamps ranged from 3 to 8(average 5.8).The time of refixation ranged from 5 to 17minutes with average 9.4 minutes.Obvious statistical significance(p=0.015)was found in postoperative CT-scan results between single window group and two windows group,although it is no statistical difference in intraoperative subjective valuation(p>0.05).In all 18 cases,the alignment of fragments was precise,the fixation rigid,and the esthetic result satisfying.Conclusions:Reconstruction forehead by refixation of bone fragments with titanium clamps in Frontal depressed skull fractures is safe and suitable.This technique promises to be a good alternative in the repair of Frontal comminuted depressed skull fractures.The simplicity,reliable fixation and fast handling are its prominent features.

The rates of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) continue to parallel the rising rates of obesity in the United States, increasingly affecting adolescents as well as adults. Hippocampal and Frontal lobe reductions have been found in older adults with type 2 diabetes, and we sought to ascertain if these brain alterations were also present in obese adolescents with T2DM. In a cross-sectional study we compared MRI-based regional brain volumes of 18 obese adolescents with T2DM and 18 obese controls without evidence of marked insulin resistance. Groups were matched on age, sex, school grade, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, body mass index, and waist circumference. Relative to obese controls, adolescents with T2DM had significantly reduced hippocampal and preFrontal volumes, and higher rates of global cerebral atrophy. Hemoglo-bin A1c, an index of long-term glycemic control, was inversely associated with preFrontal volume and positively associ-ated with global cerebral atrophy (both p < 0.05). Brain integrity is negatively impacted by T2DM already during ado-lescence, long before the onset of overt macrovascular disease. Paralleling the findings of greater vascular and renal complications among obese adolescents with severe insulin resistance and T2DM relative to their age-matched peers with type 1 diabetes, we find clear evidence of possible brain complications. Our findings call for aggressive and early intervention to limit the negative impact of obesity-associated insulin resistance leading to T2DM on the developing brains of adolescents.

Frontal genesis of moisture atmosphere during the early 2008 persistent freezing-rain event in southern China

From January 10 to February 2, 2008, a severe and persistent freezing-rain event occurred in southern and southwestern China. Here we use an observational analysis to compare the persistent freezing-rain event in the early 2008 with the winter precipita- tion in the late 2007 over south of the Yangtze River (Jiangnan). The persistent freezing-rain event was directly linked to the activity of quasi-stationary front. The gradient of equivalent temperature (ET) can well indicate the Frontal genesis of moist atmosphere (moisture front) and its activity as well as its relationship with precipitation belt. The precipitation types (snow and freezing rains) are related to the vertical structure of moisture front. The inversion profile of ET vertical distribution is a typical synoptic condition that caused the freezing-rain event. The horizontal gradient of ET with a criterion of 10℃ / 100 km, which reflects the accumulation and release of atmospheric energy, can be applied to predict the precipitation 5-10 days in advance.
