Effect of normalized plasma frequency on electron phase-space orbits in a free-electron laser

Irregular phase-space orbits of the electrons are harmful to the electron-beam transport quality and hence deteriorate the performance of a free-electron laser （FEL）. In previous literature, it was demonstrated that the irregularity of the electron phase-space orbits could be caused in several ways, such as varying the wiggler amplitude and inducing sidebands. Based on a Hamiltonian model with a set of self-consistent differential equations, it is shown in this paper that the electron- beam normalized plasma frequency functions not only couple the electron motion with the FEL wave, which results in the evolution of the FEL wave field and a possible power saturation at a large beam current, but also cause the irregularity of the electron phase-space orbits when the normalized plasma frequency has a sufficiently large value, even if the initial energy of the electron is equal to the synchronous energy or the FEL wave does not reach power saturation.

Harmonic-enhanced high-gain harmonic generation for a high repetition rate free-electron laser

High-gain harmonic generation(HGHG) is effective to produce fully coherent free-electron laser(FEL) pulses for various scientific applications. Due to the limitation of seed lasers, HGHG typically operates at a low repetition *** this paper, a harmonic-enhanced HGHG scheme is proposed to relax the peak power requirement for the seed laser,which can therefore operate at megahertz and a higher repetition rate. Moreover, the setup of the scheme is compact and can be adopted in an existing single-stage HGHG facility to extend the shortest achievable wavelength. Simulations show that FEL emission at 13.5 nm(20th harmonic) can be obtained with a 270 nm, 1 MW(peak power) seed laser.

3D-Simulations of Transverse Optical Modes of the free electron laser Resonator with Hole Output Coupling

The transverse construction of optical modes in the wiggler is calculated and the numerical simulations of the free-electron laser hole-coupled resonator are carried *** 3D-simulations include optical amplitude distributions,modes evolvement of optical field and the influence of hole-radius on the distributing of *** nu-merical simulations confirm that the fraction of the even-order modes increase in the start-up stage and then decreases in the exponential gain ***,it is found that the fundamental mode is dominant in the saturate *** on this observa-tion,we estimate the optical output coupling by using the the fundamental *** is found that the numerical results and the first-order estimate are in good agreement for a range of the hole size.

High-repetition-rate seeded free-electron laser enhanced by self-modulation

The spectroscopic methods for the ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics of materials require fully coherent extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray radiation with high-average *** free-electron lasers(FELs)are ideal sources for delivering fully coherent soft X-ray ***,due to state-of-theart laser system limitations,it is challenging to meet the ultraviolet seed laser’s requirements of sufficient energy modulation and high repetition rates *** self-modulation scheme has been proposed and recently demonstrated in a seeded FEL to relax the seed laser *** numerical simulations,we show that the required seed laser intensity in the self-modulation is~3 orders of magnitude lower than that in the standard high-gain harmonic generation(HGHG).The harmonic self-modulation can launch a singlestage HGHG FEL lasing at the 30th harmonic of the seed ***,the proof-of-principle experimental results confirm that the harmonic self-modulation can still amplify the laser-induced energy *** achievements reveal that the self-modulation can not only remarkably reduce the requirements of the seed laser but also improve the harmonic upconversion efficiency,which paves the way for realizing high-repetitionrate and fully coherent soft X-ray FELs.

Three-dimensional simulation of long-wavelength free-electron lasers with helical wiggler and ion-channel guiding

A three-dimensional simulation of a steady-state amplifier model of a long-wavelength free-electron laser （FEL） with realizable helical wiggler and ion-channel guiding is presented. The set of coupled nonlinear differential equations for electron orbits and fields of TE 11 mode in a cylindrical waveguide are solved numerically by the Runge–Kutta algorithm with averages calculated by the Gaussian quadrature technique. Self-fields and space-charge effects are neglected, and the electron beam is assumed to be cold and slippage is ignored. The parameters correspond to the Compton regime. Evolution of the radiation power and growth rate along the wiggler is studied. Ion-channel density is chosen to obtain optimum efficiency. Simulations are preformed for the FEL operating in the neighborhood of 35 GHz and 16.5 GHz for the electron beam energies of 250 keV and 400 keV, respectively. The result of the saturated efficiency was found to be in good agreement with the simple estimation based on the phase-trapping model.

We present possible conceptual designs of a laser system for driving table-top free-electron lasers based on terahertz acceleration. After discussing the achievable performances of laser amplifiers with Yb:YAG at cryogenic and room temperature and Yb:YLF at cryogenic temperature, we present amplification modules with available results and concepts of amplifier chains based on these laser media. Their performances are discussed in light of the specifications for the tasks within the table-top light source. Technical and engineering challenges, such as cooling, control, synchronization and diagnostics, are outlined. Three concepts for the laser layout feeding the accelerator are eventually derived and presented.

Plural interactions of space charge wave harmonics during the development of two-stream instability

We construct a cubically nonlinear theory of plural interactions between harmonics of the growing space charge wave（SCW） during the development of the two-stream instability. It is shown that the SCW with a wide frequency spectrum is formed when the frequency of the first SCW harmonic is much lower than the critical frequency of the two-stream *** SCW has part of the spectrum in which higher harmonics have higher amplitudes. We analyze the dynamics of the plural harmonic interactions of the growing SCW and define the saturation harmonic levels. We find the mechanisms of forming the multiharmonic SCW for the waves with frequencies lower than the critical frequency and for the waves with frequencies that exceed the critical frequency.
