: Case studies on Poisson lognormal distribution of species abundance have been rare, especially in forest communities. We propose a numerical method to fit the Poisson lognormal to the species abundance data at an evergreen mixed forest in the Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve, South China. Plants in the tree, shrub and herb layers in 25 quadrats of 20 m× 20 m, 5 m× 5 m, and 1 m× 1 m were surveyed. Results indicated that: (i) for each layer, the observed species abundance with a similarly small median, mode, and a variance larger than the mean was reverse J-shaped and followed well the zero-truncated Poisson lognormal; (ii) the coefficient of variation, skewness and kurtosis of abundance, and two Poisson lognormal parameters (& and μ) for shrub layer were closer to those for the herb layer than those for the tree layer; and (iii) from the tree to the shrub to the herb layer, the α and the coefficient of variation decreased, whereas diversity increased. We suggest that: (i) the species abundance distributions in the three layers reflects the overall community characteristics; (ii) the Poisson lognormal can describe the species abundance distribution in diverse communities with a few abundant species but many rare species; and (iii) 1/α should be an alternative measure of diversity.

THE ESTIMATE OF THE EFFECTIVE FUEL COMBUSTION VALUE OF forest community IN THE DAXINGAN MOUNTAIN

Under the condition of absolute dry, more than thirty forest fuel pararneters,ash content. extract and burning point were measured. By the method of regression step by step. we found an experience formula which can estimate effective fuel high combusti on value of forest community from the Daxingan Mountain,and then,By means of modifying moisture content. we gave an approximate formula about actual heat releasing of forest fuels in the forest fire behavior.

Understorey species distinguish late successional and ancient forests after decades of minimum human intervention: A case study from Slovenia

The main species composition drivers in temperate deciduous forests are environmental conditions, a stand?s age and the site history, e.g., the succession stage and past land use, as well as disturbance regime and current management. We compared plant species diversity and composition in late successional and ancient forests, cooccurring on the same small river island applying species accumulation curves and nonmetric multidimensional scaling, respectively. Given the island?s geomorphological characteristics, we expected these to be very similar before human intervention in the past. The forests experienced differing disturbance regimes in the past, while over the last 30 years, human intervention has been the same and reduced to a minimum. The ancient forest in this study had two major characteristics defining it as old, mature forest: continuity of presence for more than 200years and specific composition. The late successional forest experienced major disturbance in the 20th century and was allowed natural regeneration by bordering on the ancient forest, representing a potential species pool,and by decades of minimum human intervention. Our results showed that, even though there was no difference in species richness, we could still detect differences between the forests, particularly in the abundance and species composition of the understorey, among which geophytes had the most indicative importance. To make our results useful on a broader scale, we composed from the literature a species list of plants indicative for ancient forest and tested its application. These results are important for distinguishing between old and mature secondary stands and particularly for identifying old forest stands, which should be conserved and, in the case of fragmented landscapes, included in a network connecting forest fragments.

Dongtian Park is a forest park in Dongtian Lake Ecological Tourism Resort in Meizhou City,South *** investigation and analysis of sample methods of the forest community structure and plant diversity in this park,the results showed that there were 181 plant species,belonging to 138 genera in 76 families,including 48 trees,60 shrubs,36 herbs and 37 *** flora is a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest with some distinct tropical properties,and evergreen trees accounted for 48.62%of total plant *** dominant species in the tree layer were Schima superba,Pinus massoniana,Cinnamomum parthenoxylon,etc.,and those in the shrub layer were Bambusa textilis,Aidia cochinchinensis,Rhaphiolepis indica,etc.,and in herb layer were Carex baccans,Adiantum flabellulatum,Cibotium barometz,etc.,and the lianas mainly included Smilax hypoglauca,Callerya dielsiana,Trachelospermum jasminoides,*** were few adults of dominant species in the tree layer,*** and *** also lacked seedlings,they would still maintain their dominant position for a quite long period,but Cyclobalanopsis neglecta had sufficient seedling reserves and would be most likely to become a dominant species in *** community had relatively rich species,many ferns and lianas and complex *** evenness,Shannon-Wiener diversity,Pielou uniformity and Simpson index were higher in the shrub layer than in the tree and herb layer,and the Simpson index was the lowest(0.9280)in the herb layer and Shannon-Wiener diversity index was the highest(7.5853)in the liana layer.

Relationship between species richness and biomass on environmental gradient in natural forest communities on ***,northwest China

We analyzed the relationship between species richness and biomass in natural forest communities at two similar sites on Mt. Xiaolongshan, northwest China. At both sites, a wide range of tree layer biomass levels was available by local biomass estimation models. In order to identify underlying mechanism of the species richness-biomass relationship, we included different water resource levels and number of individuals in each plot in our analysis. We sampled 15 and 20 plots （20 m ×20 m）, respectively, at both two sites. These plots were sampled equally on the sunny slope and the shady slope. Species richness, number of individuals of each species and diameter at breast height （DBH） as a substitute of biomass of tree layer were recorded in each sample. At one site, the relationship between species richness and biomass was significant on the sunny slope, and this relationship disappeared on the shady slope due to more environmental factors. The relations between species richness and number of individuals and between number of individuals and biomass paralleled the species richness-biomass relation on both slopes. The difference in number of individuals-biomass relationships on the sunny slope and the shady slope revealed ＂interspecific competitive exclusion＂ even though the species richness-biomass relationships were not hump-shaped. At the other site, species richness was not related to biomass or to number of individuals. Our study demonstrated the importance of environmental stress and succession of community in the understanding of species diversity-productivity patterns.

The carbon accumulation and dissipation features of sub-alpine woodland in ***

Based on biomass investigations, soil respiration an d plant photosynthesis measurement of dominant trees in Hailuogou valley o f Mt. Gongga, Southwest China, the carbon (C) storage, absorption and release for several typical woodlands in sub-alpine zones have been di scussed. For Abies fabri forest of 3,000 m above sea level, the C stor age amount is 177.4 t/ha for above-ground biomass and 143.2 t/ha for s oil below-ground biomass. The annual gross C fixed by vegetation photo synthesis is 20-24 t/ha. The C release by canopy respiration is 3.0-5.5 t/ha for arbors and 10-19 t/ha for surface soil and roots. The annual net C f ixed of forest ecosystem is about 6.0-7.1 t/ha. At lower elevations, t he amount of C released by woodlands is higher than that of woods a t higher elevations. The C fixed capacity of renewed forest with middle-aged t rees is higher than that of mature forest. Before becoming over-matured forest, woodland is an important sink of C whereas bareland in woods is the source of atmospheric C.

本文通过观测宝天曼自然群落植物的生长发育过程,在完全自然生长不离体的情况下,用LI-6400便携式光合仪测定不同植物叶片的光合特性,来探讨群落种间关系:(1)灌木树种冬芽的萌发早于乔木20天,而且同一层的不同树种冬芽的萌发时间也相差1周,乔木冬芽膨大到萌发所需时间短于灌木;(2)乔、灌、草本植物发芽抽枝时间分别为4月初,3月中旬,3月初。在发芽时间间隔上,草、灌植物相差时间最短,灌、乔植物相差时间最长;(3)乔、灌枝条的形态生长均经过“快速—缓慢—停止”3个生长阶段;(4)草本植物在5月初停止植株生长,灌木树种在6月初停止枝条形态生长,而悬钩子到10月中旬才停止生长,乔木树种在6月中旬;(5)乔木层中栓皮栎的枝条生长指标均高于山合欢和盐肤木,灌木层中悬钩子均高于绣线菊和连翘,草本层中乌药株高形态生长指标高于珍珠菜;(6)绣线菊的枝条形态指标生长速度最快,特别是叶片面积能够在较短时间内达到成叶;(7)树木的叶片脱落时,新冬芽生长基本停止;(8)乔、灌、草展叶数为灌木>乔木>草本,单叶面积或小叶面积依次为草本>乔木>灌木,乔、灌枝长和草本株高依次为草本>灌木>乔木,乔、灌枝粗和草本株粗度依次为乔木>灌木>草本;(9)乔木层中栓皮栎枝条在快速生长时,其叶片净光合速率高于山合欢、盐肤木,灌木层中绣线菊净光合速率在季节变化中始终低于连翘和悬钩子,其中连翘的净光合速率最高,在春、秋季草本层乌药净光合速率高于珍珠菜,而夏季乌药的净光合速率低于珍珠菜,但两者净光合速率相差不大;(10)3月灌、草植物的净光合速率在其生长季节里最高,5月～9月乔木树种净光合速率是灌木树种的2倍,是草本植物的3倍,9月乔、灌、草植物净光合速率下降,而10月草、灌植物的光合作用反而增强,而且草本植物的净光合速率是灌木树种的1.5倍;(11)乔木树种在春末、盛夏、初秋其净光合速率较高,灌木树种在春季、夏季较高,草本植物在春季、仲秋较高;(12)3、4月灌木层、草本层植物的净光合速率日变化趋势稳定,其上午与下午净光合速率相当。在5、6月乔木层、灌木层、草本层植物的净光合速率日变化分别不变,其净光合速率依次为乔木>灌木>草本,上午8:00～10:00是乔木树种净光合速率的高峰期,而灌、草植物净光合速率主要发生在上午10:00～下午16:00。在8、9月乔木层、灌木层、草本层植物的净光合速率日变化相似,上午是乔、灌木树种净光合速率的高峰期,而草本植物的净光合速率在上午和下午相当。在10月灌、草植物净光合速率比较接近,乔、灌、草植物的净光合速率均在上午出现高峰期。在10月乔、灌、草植物净光合速率比较接近,而在其他生长季节里三者净光合速率有明显差距,其中乔木树种净光合速率远高于灌、草植物。
