Removing barriers to healthcare through an intercultural healthcare system:focus group evidence

Objective:Barriers to healthcare in Ghana are *** people,including patients and providers,face them at different *** address these barriers,there is a need to explore the role of an intercultural healthcare *** paper explores and provides the first evidence on ways through which an intercultural healthcare system can reduce the sociocultural and economic barriers to healthcare in ***:focus group discussions with 35 participants comprising 17 healthcare users,11 formal healthcare providers and 7 alternative healthcare providers were conducted to gather *** analyses were performed on the transcribed data and presented based on a posteriori inductive reduction ***:Findings reveal that an intercultural healthcare system in Ghana can help reduce barriers to healthcare,especially cultural,social and economic barriers,by fostering an enhanced relationship between culture and healthcare,promoting affordable healthcare and promoting effective communication between healthcare providers and *** institutional support,lack of strong political will and commitment,lack of training to meet standards of practice,poor registration and regulatory measures,and lack of universal acceptance inhibit implementation of an intercultural healthcare system in ***:The support for intercultural healthcare system and the agreement on its perceived ability to reduce social,cultural and economic healthcare barriers for service users offer an opportunity for policymakers to demonstrate a stronger political will and improved commitment for effective education and training,enforcement of regulatory measures,inclusion of intercultural healthcare in medical school curricula across the country,and community engagement.

User studies can provide valuable insights to the product design process. Exploratory user research can support the design team in deciding what to design by understanding user needs and motivations. It can guide improvements to existing products, applications and services, and support the evaluation of existing product usability. Two complimentary qualitative methods are covered in this paper: contextual inquiry (CI) and focus groups. CI draws on the rich context of user’s lives to collect informative and inspirational material. An interview in a subject’s home for example can follow up comments that a user has about a particular object by seeing where that object is stored in the home. Analysis of the data can consider factors that were obvious in context but less obvious in the confines of a laboratory.

Experiences of Being Non-Smoking among Adolescents in a Smoking Context

Introduction: A study among Greenlandic 13-year-old showed that 68 percent for boys and 55 percent for girls, and at age 15, 46 percent of the boys and 32 percent of the girls were non-smokers. A literature review showed that the behaviour of parents and peers, attitudes and expectations were crucial factors for the smoking habits of adolescents. Young adults would more likely start smoking if their parents, older siblings and/or friends were smokers. Parental support has been proven to be a preventive factor against smoking, especially if the school and leisure centers get involved. group pressure, directly or indirectly, is often described as the most important reason why adolescents start smoking. The purpose was to study why some adolescents choose to be smoke-free in a society where the norm is to smoke. Methods: Adolescents who were non-smokers were interviewed in focus groups. The material was analysed using content analysis. Results: The contents analysis of the text resulted in eleven categories. Based on these, four themes were developed. These themes covered areas on the reasons for being smoke-free;how the smoke-free adolescents generally felt about smokers from a society or environment perspective, and also specifically from an individual perspective, such as how smokers took up space and did not show any consideration. There was a feeling among non-smokers of not belonging and of ambivalence, as well as a perspective of the future for adolescents in Greenland and an uncertainty about what would be required for a smoke-free environment. Conclusions: In a context where the norm is to smoke, the adolescents need to make a conscious choice to be smoke-free, and there were different reasons for this choice. This choice means becoming an outsider in their group of peers as well as the overall social culture. Smokers were seen as taking up too much space, as their needs ruled and this was deemed inconsiderate.
