Modelling energy efficiency in China:a fixed-effects panel stochastic frontier approach

This paper combines energy demand modelling with stochastic frontier analysis to investigate the changing trends,variations and determinants of energy efficiency for 27 Chinese provinces over the period 1995 to 2014.An aggregate‘frontier’energy demand function and an efficiency function are estimated simultaneously.We obtained several findings.First,the energy intensity is not a particularly good indicator of energy efficiency.Second,the energy efficiency levels for all the provinces improved during the sample period,but the current efficiency levels are still low,implying great potential for energy saving.In addition,the energy efficiency gap among the provinces seems to have widened over the past 20 years,as the variance has increased by almost three times.Finally,technological progress driven by new investment and the development of market mechanisms are two important drivers of energy efficiency improvement.

The study of spatial econometrics has developed rapidly and has found wide applications in many different scientific fields,such as demography,epidemiology,regional economics,and psychology.With the deepening of research,some scholars find that there are some model specifications in spatial econometrics,such as spatial autoregressive(SAR)model and matrix exponential spatial specification(MESS),which cannot be nested within each other.Compared with the common SAR models,the MESS models have computational advantages because it eliminates the need for logarithmic determinant calculation in maximum likelihood estimation and Bayesian estimation.Meanwhile,MESS models have theoretical advantages.However,the theoretical research and application of MESS models have not been promoted vigorously.Therefore,the study of MESS model theory has practical significance.This paper studies the quasi maximum likelihood estimation for matrix exponential spatial specification(MESS)varying coefficient panel data models with fixed effects.It is shown that the estimators of model parameters and function coefficients satisfy the consistency and asymptotic normality to make a further supplement for the theoretical study of MESS model.

This paper proposes a double penalized quantile regression for linear mixed effects model,which can select fixed and random effects simultaneously.Instead of using two tuning parameters,the proposed iterative algorithm enables only one optimal tuning parameter in each step and is more efficient.The authors establish asymptotic normality for the proposed estimators of quantile regression coefficients.Simulation studies show that the new method is robust to a variety of error distributions at different quantiles.It outperforms the traditional regression models under a wide array of simulated data models and is flexible enough to accommodate changes in fixed and random effects.For the high dimensional data scenarios,the new method still can correctly select important variables and exclude noise variables with high probability.A case study based on a hierarchical education data illustrates a practical utility of the proposed approach.

This paper presents a unified diagnostic method for exponential nonlinear models with random effects based upon the joint likelihood given by Robinson in 1991. The authors show that the case deletion model is equivalent to mean shift outlier model. From this point of view, several diagnostic measures, such as Cook distance, score statistics are derived. The local influence measure of Cook is also presented. Numerical example illustrates that our method is available.

This paper discusses the estimation of fixed polynomial effects of mixed models based on PBIB, gives three concrete estimation, and analyses the condition of the design block while is orthogonal in these models. It also shows in mixed models that the three estimations of fixed polynomial effects T are identical under tile fact that the design block is orthogonal.

Does informal care impact the use of healthcare services in China?Evidence from the perspective of drug utilization

Based on the 2011-2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS),we investigated the effect of informal care on caregivers’utilization of medical drugs using the instrumental variable method with fixed effects.Our results indicate that caregivers are more likely to take medical drugs than non-caregivers.Additionally,caregivers tend to take a significantly higher number of drugs than non-caregivers,particularly those treating physical diseases.Moreover,the effect of informal care on the drug utilization is found more significant among those aged 45-54,male caregivers,and those who provide care for their parents-in-law compared to their respective counterparts.We further identified channels through which informal care contributes to caregivers’higher drug utilization.These channels include an increased risk of developing chronic diseases,a higher number of chronic diseases,lower their self-reported health,and reduced social activities.These results offer implications for policymakers in overcoming the challenges of establishing and developing a supportive system for informal care in China.

In recent years, the international environment and conditions of China’s economic development have undergone profound and complex changes, but in the middle and long term, China’s economy has been maintaining a stable medium-high speed development. It is remarkable that population changes bring about changes in economic development;especially the aging of the population has a particularly significant impact on economic growth. Therefore, based on the inter-provincial panel data of 31 provinces and municipalities from 2011 to 2019, this paper mainly studies the impact of population change on economic growth by establishing a solid fixed effect model. The results show that there is a long-term equilibrium relationship between population structure and economic growth, and population structure has a significant positive impact on economic development. In addition, there are regional differences in the positive and significant relationship between the two.

Modelling the comprehensive effects of factors influencing the driving range of BEVs is crucial for eliminating users ’range anxiety and promoting new energy vehicle market.Based on the vehicle operating data and weather data,this paper entangles the effects of road condition,driving and charging behavior,vehicle status and external environment on the driving range of BEVs using fixed effects model by setting DDPSOC（driving distance per SOC） as the explanatory variable.The results provide comprehensive reference for BEV users to predict the variance of driving range,and act as reference for the product design,driving range forecasting strategy of vehicle manufacturers,and the charging infrastructure planning of government.
