Large hydrologic basins involve multiple stakeholders, and coupled dynamic social and ecological processes. Managing such basins has long been a challenge. Balancing the demand for water from nature against that from humans is always difficult, particularly in arid watersheds. Here, we analyze potential institutional causes of ecological degradation and how it can be reversed by introducing new forms of governance. The framework and assumptions are illustrated using China’s second-largest endorheic basin, where empirical evidence shows that the introduction of a new governing authority connecting midstream and downstream actors facilitated the establishment of a new governance regime that is better aligned with the biophysical scales of the watershed. A trans-regional water allocation project initiated by the new higher-level authority successfully rescued downstream oases and restored a dried terminal lake. These outcomes suggest that when social and ecological structures are better aligned our ability to manage the interplay between social and ecological processes increases. However, the lack of direct connection between the actors of the middle and lower reaches resulted in the paradox of an increase in water demand. We therefore suggest that measures to stimulate the emergence of horizontal social ties linking different critical groups of actors across the watershed could further the alignment of the institutional and biophysical structures-without these changes sustainable management of river basins and other common pool resources will remain problematic.

铁(Fe)是重要的微量元素,参与植物的许多重要生理和代谢过程如光合作用、呼吸作用和氮代谢等。植物通过对铁的吸收、转运、贮存、再分配来维持体内的铁稳态。植物体的铁代谢受到严格的调控。铁调节转录因子和铁转运蛋白构成了植物吸收、运输铁的调控网络,贮铁蛋白和铁转运蛋白共同调节植物高铁反应。近年来,脱落酸(abscisic acid,ABA)参与调节植物铁代谢的研究取得了重要进展。ABA可能作为信号调节Fe的吸收、运输和再利用环节,或通过调节植物体内氧化应激状态缓解植物的铁胁迫症状。为了加深对植物体ABA与铁代谢串扰的理解,本文从植物的铁吸收转运机制和代谢调控网络、ABA参与植物铁代谢及其介导的铁代谢调控机制等方面进行了综述。重点讨论了ABA与FER样缺铁诱导转录因子(FER-like iron deficiency-induced transcription factor,fit)、铁调转运蛋白1(iron-regulated transporter 1,IRT1)以及缺铁氧化应激之间的关系,并对未来的研究方向进行了展望。

Plants have evolved sophisticated genetic networks to regulate iron （Fe） homeostasis for their survival. Several classes of plant hormones including jasmonic acid （JA） have been shown to be involved in regulating the expression of iron uptake and/or deficiency-responsive genes in plants. However, the molecular mechanisms by which JA regulates iron uptake remain unclear. In this study, we found that JA negatively modulates iron uptake by downregulating the expression of fit （bHLH29）, bHLH38, bHLH39, bHLHIO0, and bHLHI01 and promoting the degradation of fit protein, a key regulator of iron uptake in Arabidopsis. We further demonstrated that the subgroup IVa bHLH proteins, bHLH18, bHLH19, bHLH20, and bHLH25, are novel interactors of fit, which promote JA-induced fit protein degradation. These four IVa bHLHs function redundantly to antagonize the activity of the Ib bHLHs （such as bHLH38） in regulating fit protein stability under iron deficiency. The four IVa bHLH genes are primarily expressed in roots, and are inducible by JA treatment. Moreover, we found that MYC2 and JAR1, two critical components of the JA signaling pathway, play critical roles in mediating JA suppression of the expression of fit and Ib bHLH genes, whereas they differentially modulate the expression of bHLH18, bHLH19, bHLH20, and bHLH25 to regulate fit accumulation under iron deficiency. Taken together, these results indicate that by transcriptionally regulating the expression of different sets of bHLH genes JA signaling promotes fit degradation, resulting in reduced expression of iron-uptake genes, IRT1 and FRO2, and increased sensitivity to iron deficiency. Our data suggest that there is a multilayered inhibition of iron-deficiency response in the presence JA in Arabidopsis.

bHLH121 Functions as a Direct Link that Facilitates the Activation of fit by bHLH IVc Transcription Factors for Maintaining Fe Homeostasis in Arabidopsis

Iron(Fe)deficiency is prevalent in plants grown in neutral or alkaline soil.Plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms that regulate Fe homeostasis,ensuring survival.In Arabidopsis,FER-LIKE IRON DEFICIENCY-INDUCED TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR(fit)is a crucial regulator of Fe-deficiency response.fit is activated indirectly by basic helix-loop-helix(bHLH)IVc transcription factors(TFs)under Fed eficiency;how ever,it remains unclear which protein(s)act as the linker to mediate the activation of fit by bHLH IVc TFs.In this study,we characterize the functions of bHLH121 and demonstrate that it directly associates with the fit promoter.We found that loss-of-function mutations of bHLH121 cause severe Fedeficiency symptoms,reduced Feaccum ulation,and disrupted expression of genes associated with Fehomeostasis.Genetic analysis showed that fit is epistatic to bHLH121 and fit overexpression partially rescues the bhlh121 mutant.Further investigations revealed that bHLH IVc TFs interact with and promote nuclear accumulation of bHLH121.We demonstrated that bHLH121 has DNA-binding activity and can bind the prom oters of the fit and bHLHlb genes,but we did not find that it has either direct transcriptional activation or repression activity tow ard these genes.Meanw hile,we found that bHLH121 functions downstream of and is a direct target of bHLH IVc TFs,and its expression is induced by Fe deficiency in a bHLH IV c-dependent manner.Taken together,these results establish that bHLH121 functions together with bHLH IVc TFs to positively regulate the expression of fit and thus plays a pivotal role in maintaining Fe homeostasis in Arabidopsis.

Purpose: This study's purpose was to examine whether established risk categories of waist circumference(WC)—normal, high risk, and very high health risk—reflected significant differences in cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF) and physical activity(PA) level.Methods: CRF was directly measured as maximal oxygen uptake during a progressive graded treadmill test to exhaustion in 722 individuals(349 women) aged 20à85 years. WC was measured between the lower rib and the iliac crest. Objectively measured PA was assessed using an accelerometer.Results: Men in the normal risk group(WC 102 cm). Corresponding numbers for women within normal(WC 88 cm) were 25% and 18%(p < 0.05). There was a high negative correlation between CRF and WC in men(r = ?0.68), and a moderate correlation for women(r = ?0.49; p < 0.001). For each cm increase in WC, CRF was reduced by 0.48 and 0.27 mL/kg/min in men and women,respectively(p < 0.001).Conclusion: The recommended WC thresholds for abdominal obesity reflected significant differences in CRF for both men and women, and could serve as a useful instrument for estimating health-related differences in CRF.

Effects of Prestressing of the Ring Gear in Interference fit on Flexural Fatigue Strength of Tooth Root

When the gearbox body interference is connected to the ring gear, prestressing occurs in the ring gear, which has a significant impact on the strength and life of the gear. Research on the prestressing of the inner ring gear is in the preliminary stage, and the distribution rule of the prestressing and the influence of each parameter on the interference prestressing have not been derived. In this paper, based on the method of calculating the prestressing of the thick cylinder in interference fit, the ring gear is found to be equivalent to a thick cylinder, and the distribution rule of prestressing of the ring gear in the interference fit is inferred. Then, by modeling and analyzing the gearbox body and ring gear in the interference fit using ABAQUS, the distribution rule of prestressing the ring gear in the interference fit is obtained through a numerical simulation. Finally, the prestressing of the ring gear in the interference fit is measured using X-ray di raction, and the distribution rule of prestressing of the ring gear in the interference fit is obtained through analysis. Compared with the distribution rule of prestressing in theory, numerical simulation, and experiment, the theoretical distribution rule of prestressing is amended through a statistical method, and a more accurate formula of prestressing is obtained. Through the calculation of the stress and bending moment in the dangerous section of the ring gear through prestressing, the formula for checking the tooth root flexural fatigue strength in the interference fit prestressing is inferred. This research proposes a tooth root bending strength conditional formula for the inner ring gear of the interference fit, which serves as a guide for the design and production of the actual interference joint inner ring gear.

Design of packing cup interference fit value of hypercompressors for low density polyethylene production

The hypercompressor is one of the core facilities in low density polyethylene production,with a discharge pressure of approximately 300 MPa.A packing cup is the basic unit of cylinder packing,assembled by the interference fit between an inner cup and an outer cup.Because the shrink-fitting prestresses the packing cup,serious design is needed to gain a favorable stress state,for example,a tri-axial compressive stress state.The traditional method of designing the interference fit value for packing cups depends on the shrink-fit theory for thickwalled cylinder subject to internal and external pressure.According to the traditional method,critical points are at the inner radii of the inner and external cup.In this study,the finite element method(FEM)has been implementcd to determine a more accurate stress level of packing cups.Different critical points have been found at the edge of lapped sealing surfaces between two adjacent packing cups.The maximum Von Mises equivalent stress in a packing cup increases after a decline with the rise of the interference fit value.The maximum equivalent stress initially occurs at the bore of the inner cup,then at the edge of lapped mating surfaces,and finally at the bore of the outer cup,as the interference radius increases.The traditional method neglects the influence of axial preloading on the interference mating pressure.As a result,it predicts a lower equivalent stress at the bore of the external cup.A higher interference fit value accepted by the traditional method may not be feasible as it might already make packing cups yield at the edge of mating surfaces or the bore of the external cup.Along with fatigue analysis,the feasible range of interference fit value has been modified by utilizing FEM.The modified range tends to be narrower and safer than the one derived from the traditional method,after getting rid of shrink-fit values that could result in yielding in a real packing cup.
