Renal transplantation provides the best long-term treatment for chronic renal failure. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) play a major role in the understanding of the genetic basis of many complex human diseases. Also, the genetics of human phenotype variation could be understood by knowing the functions of these SNPs. It is still a major challenge to identify the functional SNPs in a disease-related gene. This work explored how SNPs mutations in HLA-DRB1 gene could affect renal transplantation rejection. This study was carried out in Ahmed Gasim Hospital, Renal Dialysis Center during the period, from September 2012 to November 2013. Blood samples from five Sudanese patients (different families) with known renal transplantation rejection were collected before hemodialysis, furthermore one blood sample for control. DNA sequences results and detected SNPs were analyzed using bioinformatics tools (BLAST, SIFT, nsSNP Analyzer, PolyPhen, I-mutant, BioEdit, CPH, Chimera, Box shade and Project Hope). In addition, international databases were used for datasets [NCBI, Uniprot]. Results showed that, three SNPs were detected;two of three SNPs were predicted as tolerant or benign (rs1059575, novel) and one was deleterious (rs17885437). This study concluded that the identification of pathological SNPs could be an answer to unknown causes for a lot of organ transplantation rejection cases.

Diversity and Distribution of Spiders in Southwestern Nigeria

The study of diversity and distribution of spiders was carried out at Obafemi Awolowo University, Southwestern Nigeria, in wet and dry seasons between October 2012 and April 2014. Spiders were collected from five different sampling sites in the study area: cultivated land, open field, hill area, house dwelling and aquatic habitat. We found 1824 individuals belonging to 19 different spider families in the study area. 9 families of spiders were present in the hill habitat;12 families of spiders were present in the open field habitat;6 families of spiders were present in house habitat;9 families of spider were present in aquatic habitat. All the 19 families of spiders were present in cultivated habitat. Therefore, cultivated habitat hosted the largest number of spider families in the area of study while house dwellers hosted the least number of spider families. Spiders are evenly distributed among the five habitats in this study and the fifth habitat, teaching and research farm representing cultivated area has the highest distribution of spider species. All the species recorded in Southwestern Nigeria were found in this habitat. In conclusion, 19 different spider families are recorded in Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, during this study. These have enriched the collection of spider in Natural History Museum, Obafemi Awolowo University, Southwestern Nigeria.

Genetic Variation for Biomass and Related Morphological Traits in Cup Plant (<i>Silphium perfoliatum</i>L.)

Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) has demonstrated potential for bioenergy production in North America, South America, and Europe. Our objectives were to: 1) determine genetic variation and narrow-sense heritability for biomass and related morphological traits, and 2) identify half-sib families with superior biomass yield and potential for use in cultivar development in cup plant. Thirty three half-sib families and a check were evaluated at two locations in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Annual biomass yield at Brookings ranged from 2183 kg·ha-1 in 2012 to 8053 kg·ha-1 in 2013;whereas, yields at Arlington were similar among years. Mean individual half-sib family biomass yield ranged from 3912 to 6784 kg·ha-1 at Brookings and from 5682 to 11,269 kg·ha-1 at Arlington. Heritability estimates for five biomass-related morphological traits ranged from 0.52 to 0.72. This cup plant population had potential for biomass production in the north central USA and contained sufficient additive genetic variation to expect progress from among-and-within-family selection for biomass yield and related traits.

首次将来源于Clostridium clariflavum的木聚糖酶基因Clocl-2441中的糖苷水解酶家族10(glycosyl hydrolase families,GH)结构域基因连接到pET28a(+)载体上,在E.coli BL21(DE3)成功异源表达。经镍柱和脱盐分离纯化达到电泳纯,并对其酶学性质进行解析。结果表明,重组木聚糖酶rXyn2441GH10最适温度和pH分别为70℃和7.0,属于中性嗜热木聚糖酶。rXyn2441GH10在65℃以下和pH 4.0~9.0范围比较稳定,金属离子中5 mmol/L的Mg^(2+)可以提高79.2%的酶活。以榉木木聚糖为底物重组酶的动力学参数,V_(max)为1 691.5μmol/(mg·min),K_m值为2.5 mg/mL,k_(cat)为1 236.4/s,k_(cat)/K_m为494.6 mL/(mg·s)。定点饱和突变表明209位点的组氨酸对酶活有重要的作用。

Selection of a Suitable Wavelet for Cognitive Memory Using Electroencephalograph Signal

The aim of this study is to recognize the best and suitable wavelet family for analyzing cognitive memory using Electroencephalograph (EEG) signal. The participant was given some visual stimuli during the study phase, which were a sequence of pictures that had to be remembered to acquire the EEG signal. The Neurofax EEG 9200 was used to record the acquisition of cognitive memory at channel Fz. The raw EEG signals were analyzed using Wavelet Transform. A lot of mother wavelets can be used for analyzing the signal, but do not lose any information on the wavelet, some predictions must be made beforehand. The criteria of the EEG signal were narrowed down to the Daubechies, Symlets and Coiflets, and it is the final selection depending on their Mean Square Error (MSE). The best solution would have the least difference between the original and constructed signal. Results indicated that the Daubechies wavelet at a level of decomposition of 4 (db4) was the most suitable wavelet for pre-processing the raw EEG signal of cognitive memory. To conclude, choosing the suitable wavelet family is more important than relying on the MSE value alone to successfully perform a wavelet transformation.
