Stigma and its impact on the Families of former soldiers of the German Armed Forces: An exploratory study

Background: Military Families who have a family member with a mental illness see themselves confronted with many demands. Stigmatization is one of these challenges. Stigmatization affects not only the individual who suffers from a mental illness but also other family members via stigma by association and vicarious stigma. Stigma by association occurs when mental illness stigma spills over to individuals associated with an individual with a mental illness. Vicarious stigma describes the suffering of family members when they note the impact of stigma on their relative with mental illness. As a societal phenomenon, stigma plays out in social interactions and might therefore influence the social networks of Families. It is also associated with healthcare utilization.Methods: Narrative interviews were conducted with 15 family members(partners, spouses, parents and children) of former soldiers of the German Armed Forces with a service-induced mental illness. The transcribed interview data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach, in which codes were formed and emerging themes were systemized. Relationships between stigma, the Families’ reactions to it, its effects on their social relationships and its interference with their healthcare utilization were analyzed.Results: This study provides a detailed description of how relatives of former German soldiers with mental health problems experience stigma by association and vicarious stigma. Their perceptions are shown in a model that describes stigma-related attitudes, reactions to them and their effects on the social relationships of former soldiers’ Families. These Families felt stigmatized because of the former soldiers’ mental illness(mental illness stigma) and the military context in which it occurred(former soldier stigma). They reacted with nondisclosure, anger, acceptance and self-blame. Nonlinear feedback shift registers(NFSRs)are widely used as building blocks in the design of stream ciphers.Let NFSR(f)be an NFSR with the characteristic function f and let G(f)be the set of output sequences of NFSR(f).For a given NFSR(f),if there exists an affine Boolean function l such that G(l)?G(f),then G(l)is called an affine sub-family of NFSR(f).In this paper,by skillfully combining previous ideas,the authors give a new upper bound on the order of affine sub-Families of NFSR(f).Compared with the four known bounds,the bound is better than three of them,and in some cases is also better than the rest one.

Some intriguing upper bounds for separating hash Families

An N ×n matrix on q symbols is called {w_1,...,w_t}-separating if for arbitrary t pairwise disjoint column sets C_1,..., C_t with |C_i|=w_i for 1 ≤i≤t, there exists a row f such that f(C_1),...,f(C_t) are also pairwise disjoint, where f(C_i) denotes the collection of componentn of C_i restricted to row f. Given integers N, q and w_1,...,w_t, denote by C(N,q,{w_1,...,w_t}) the maximal a such that a corresponding matrix does exist.The determination of C(N,q,{w_1,...,w_t}) has received remarkable attention during the recent years. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce two novel methodologies to attack the upper bound of C(N, q, {w_1,...,w_t}).The first one is a combination of the famous graph removal lemma in extremal graph theory and a Johnson-type recursive inequality in coding theory, and the second onc is the probabilistic method. As a consequence, we obtain several intriguing upper bounds for some parameters of C(N,q,{w_1,...,w_t}), which significantly improve the previously known results.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with the Anxio-Depressive Symptoms of the Families of Patients in Intensive Care Unit at Gabriel Toure University Hospital, Bamako, Mali

Introduction: Hospitalization in intensive care is a source of stress and anxiety for close to the patients. Anxio-depressive symptoms appear to be common in intensive care and their prevalence is poorly evaluated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of anxio-depressive symptoms in Families. Materials and method: Observational prospective study in Families of patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit for a period of 5 months. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were measured using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) during hospitalization. Anxiety and depression were defined by a score greater than 10. Factors associated with the onset of anxious-depressive symptoms were sought. The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in close relatives was measured by the Impact Event Scale-Revised scale (IES-R). Results: A total of 107 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit, of which 49 Families agreed to participate in our study. Overall mortality was 32.2% during this period. Fifty-eight (58) patients were not included for the following reasons: death or hospitalization of less than 48 hours, refusal of Families, institution, and lack of parents speaking French. Forty-nine (49) relatives completed the HADS questionnaire. Forty-three Families completed the IES-R questionnaire, a return rate of 87.7%. The prevalence of anxiety was 61.2% among parents in early hospitalization. The level of anxiety was significantly associated with male parents (p = 0.035) and those with lower education (p = 0.046). The prevalence of depressive symptoms in parents was evaluated 53% at D3. Education level (p = 0.048) and male parents (p = 0.048) appeared to be a significant depression factor. The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder was 55.1% among the relatives of the patients. The lack of co-morbidity in admission patients was significantly associated with the occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder in the family. Motivated by Ru and Stoll's accomplishment of the second main theorem in higher dimension with moving targets, many authors studied the moving target problems in value distribution theory and related topics. But thereafter up to the present, all of researches about normality criteria for Families of meromorphic mappings of several complex variables into PN(C) have been still restricted to the hyperplane case. In this paper, we prove some normality criteria for Families of meromorphic mappings of several complex variables into PN(C) for moving hyperplanes, related to Nochka's Picard-type theorems.The new normality criteria greatly extend earlier related results.

Monthly Changes in the Resin Yield of Semi-sib Families of Pinus elliottii

Monthly changes in the resin yield of semi-sib Families of Pinus elliottii during 2013-2015 were studied.The results showed that from April to October,the resin yield of the P.elliottii Families was the lowest in April and the highest in July.There were significant differences between various Families in terms of resin yield.The change of resin yield was closely related to temperature,and the higher the temperature was,the higher the resin yield was.P.elliottii mainly produced resin from June to September.

Acute Stress Symptoms in Families of Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit during the First 24 Hours Following Admission in Japan

Families of patients in the intensive care unit often experience sever stress. Understanding their experience is important for providing family-centered care during this difficult period. Little is known about the experience of Families of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). To evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with acute stress symptoms among Families of patients admitted to the ICU, we carried out a cross-sectional study at a teaching and advanced treatment hospital. The mean total Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) score differed significantly between planned and unplanned ICU admissions (t = 4.03, p < 0.05), indicating a main effect of admission type (F = 18.5, p < 0.05). There was no significant main effect of relationship (F = 0.05, p = 0.82) or interaction effect of admission type and relationship (F = 0.54, p = 0.47). Multiple regression analysis indicated that admission type was significantly associated with acute stress symptoms (B = 18.09, β = 0.47, p < 0.01), and explained 22% of the variance in total IES-R score. Whether a patient had a planned or unplanned admission to the ICU influenced symptoms associated with acute stress symptoms of family members more than did getting support from nurses, being the patient’s spouse, or the severity of illness of the patient.

Partnering with Batswana Youth and Families for HIV and AIDS Prevention

Introduction: This qualitative study triangulated data from adolescents, parents, and key informants in Gaborone, Botswana on adolescents’ risks for HIV infection, STIs and pregnancy, the types of relationships they get into, and preventive measures they use to protect themselves against HIV infection. The goal of this qualitative research is to inform adaptation of an intervention originally developed, implemented, and evaluated in the US that was effective in reducing the risk of HIV infection and early pregnancy by delaying initiation of sexual relationships of abstinent adolescents and lowering sexual risk behaviours of adolescents who were already sexually active. The objectives of this study were to conduct in-depth interviews with youth, key informants and parents;determine the behavioural risks that young people face;Assess youth and parents’ attitudes toward providing a risk reduction programme for adolescents and Use the data to adapt an evidence-based programme for Botswana. Methodology: In-depth qualitative interviews with 40 youth, 20 key informants and 40 parents elicited information on the risks and relationships that youth engaged in and their suggestions how their risky behaviours could be minimized or counteracted. Findings: Youth of both sexes engage in risky sexual behaviours that could predispose them to contracting HIV and STI infections or unplanned pregnancies. Risks were associated with use of alcohol and drugs: commonly marijuana, and engaging in unsafe sexual relations. Youth, key informants and parents showed a high level of acceptability for offering a primary prevention intervention program for adolescents. In addition, all groups of participants concurred on the importance of offering a separate program for parents to equip them with skills that can enable to them to guide their adolescents to safely transit into adulthood through education and family communication skills. Web Based Supportive Intervention for Families Living with Schizophrenia—An Open Trial

Background: Web based modalities should be explored to support Families living with mental illness. A web based tool including a psychoeducative module, a diary and a password protected forum was developed aimed at relatives’ of a person with schizophrenia to alleviate daily life. Aim: The aim of the present study was to explore participants’ use of the web based tool with focus on the forum and its potential health and psychosocial benefits. Methods: Nineteen persons participated in this explorative open trial. The forum posts were analyzed using content analysis. Self-rating instruments assessing caregiver burden, stigma and the tool’s usability were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: The qualitative analysis resulted in four main categories and subcategories describing relatives’ situation and interaction in the forum: Caring for a Person with Schizophrenia, Crisis and Care, Secrecy vs Openness, and Interaction and Social Support. Experiences of caregiver burden, but also fulfillment with caregiving tasks were reported. Concealing or hiding the family’s mental illness was common, but also the ability to use inner strength to cope with stigma and discrimination. The mean usability score was 59 (70 = good). Conclusion: Web based support can help address some of the Families’ needs of support, although it encompasses certain limitations. Patient rights and the availability of resources, especially in cases of emergency, need to be made easily visible and accessible to alleviate Families’ burden.
