The propagation of optical solitons in fiber amplifiers is discussed by considering a model that includes linear high order dispersion, two photon absorption, nonlinear high order dispersion, self induced Ramam and five order nonlinear effects. Based on travelling wave method, the solutions of the nonlinear Schr dinger equations, and the influence on soliton propagation as well as high order effect in the fiber amplifier are discussed in detail. It is found that because of existing five order nonlinear effect, the solution is not of secant hyperbola type, but shows high gain state of the fiber amplifier which is very favourable to the propagation of solitons.

Gain saturation is a significant phenomenon of fiber Raman amplifiers（FRAs）.Gain figures versus signal power are well *** the small signal,the coupled ordinary differential equations are used,and for the large signal,the Raman gain coefficient is *** is shown that the saturation power of FRAs decreases with the pump power,and gain saturation is easier to occur in the forward pump scheme than in the backward pump *** phenomena are well explained by the stimulated Brillouin scattering （SBS） *** research provides a guide to the fabrication of practical FRAs.

We optimize the novel configuration of a hybrid fiber amplifier - Raman assisted-fiber-based optical parametric amplifier （R-FOPA）, in which the parametric gain and Raman gain profiles are combined to achieve a flat composite gain profile. The pump powers and the fiber length in the hybrid amplifier are effectively optimized by genetic algorithm （GA） scheme. The optimization results indicate that the RFOPA can achieve a 200-nm flat bandwidth spectrum with the gain of 20 dB and ripple of less than 4 dB.

With the use of pulsed pumping, an optical fiber amplifier with all-fiber structure is developed based on the fused tapered fiber combiner and Yb^3＋-doped double cladding fiber （YDCF）. From the experimental results, 47-dBm peak power and 100-ns pulse duration are obtained when the repetition rate of pumping pulses is 100 Hz. The gain of the amplifier is up to 30 dB. It is shown that due to the use of pulsed pumping, pump light emits only when the signal light reaches the amplifier and thus the amplified spontaneous emission （ASE） is significantly suppressed.

The efficient generation of a 1.17-mJ laser pulse with 360 ps duration using an ytterbium （Yb）-doped fiber amplifier chain seeded by a homemade mode-locked fiber laser is demonstrated experimentally. A specially designed figure-of-eight fiber laser acts as the seed source of a chirped-pulse amplification （CPA） system and generates mode-locked pulses with hundreds of picosecond widths. Two kinds of large-mode-area （LMA） double-clad Yb-doped fibers are employed to construct the pre-amplifier and main amplifier. All of the adopted instruments help avoid severe nonlinearity in fibers to raise sub-nanosecond pulse energy with acceptable signal-to-noise ratio （SNR）. The output spectrum of this fiber-based CPA system shows that amplified spontaneous emission （ASE） is suppressed to better than 30 dB, and the onset of stimulated Raman scattering is excluded.

We experimentally obtain the route from period doubling to chaos in an active optical fiber ring resonator （AOFRR） with optical injection. The results show that the AOFRR is sensitive to external optical injection and demonstrate various dynamic characteristics. Meanwhile, the change of the injection strength can cause the output of the AOFRR to become periodic or chaotic. It can be confirmed that all the dynamic characteristics of the system are due to the interaction of the semiconductor laser with the erbium-doped fiber amplifier （EDFA）.

The numerical study on the performance of large-mode-area （LMA） fibers coiled onto a spool in high power amplifier is carried out as the bend-induced distortion of fiber modes severely affects the output characteristics of amplifier systems. The variations for high-order mode bend distortion with different orientations relative to the plane of the fiber bend are observed and shown. Concerning the practical applications, a bend-resistant LMA fiber with the mode area larger than 1000 μm^2 and excellent highorder mode suppression is designed completely by optimizing the refractive index （RI） and dopant profile. The results indicate that a hybrid profile of RI and dopant is the best choice for LMA fiber with coiling.

A waveguide amplifier is fabricated by Ag^＋-Na^＋ two-step ion exchange on Er/Yb-doped phosphate glass. The spectroscopic performance of glass and the properties of channel waveguide are characterized. A double-pass configuration is adopted to measure the gain and noise figure （NF） of the waveguide amplifier, and the comparison of gain and NF for the single and double-pass configuration of the waveguide amplifier is presented. The results show that the double-pass configuration can make the gain increase from 8.8dB （net gain 2.2dB/cm） of the single-pass one to 14.6dB （net gain 3.65dB/cm） for small input power at 1534nm, and the NF are all lower than 5.5dB for both the configurations.

Spectral hole burning （SHB） effects in a gain-flattened erbium-doped fiber amplifier （EDFA） are demonstrated to be significant in the presence of large signal power around the 1530-1532-nm wavelength range. These are the first effects reported in a setup employing equivalent power level distribution of 40 channels ranging from 1530 to 1561 nm. To explain this, the introduction of a new local population variable into the laser equation is required to support the original inversion ratio that is determined by the pump lasers. In the analysis section, spectroscopic parameters and high signal powers are considered to be other contributing parameters to the change in the gain characteristics. An improvement to this theoretical basis is suggested by implementing mathematical modeling to validate similarities between the gain shape of simulation to that obtained in the experiment.
