Introduction: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is one of the leading causes of mortality among women of reproductive age and Mother to Child Transmission of Human immunodeficiency virus is still a challenge affecting many countries. Globally, an estimation of 180,000 children under 15 years acquire the Human immunodeficiency virus every day, and more than 90% of those infections are due to Mother to Child Transmission. The study sought to explore the experiences of mothers on the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission-HIV services at Mtendere Clinic, Lusaka. Materials and Methods: Qualitative interpretive phenomenology study design was employed using in-depth interviews to collect data from a sample that was selected using purposive sampling technique. Thirteen participants were recruited, and these were HIV-positive mothers at least between the ages of 15 and 49 years and enrolled in the Elimination of Mother To Child Transmission-HIV program. The in-depth interviews were audiotape recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data was analyzed using thematic method. Findings: Three main themes that emerged are;living with HIV, support system and barriers to utilization of Elimination of Mother To Child Transmission-HIV services. Most of the participants expressed having acquired knowledge from the program, and received counselling and support from spouses, family as well as health personnel at Mtendere health facility which culminated into a positive experience and enhanced their uptake of the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission-HIV services. However, barriers to service utilization were identified and these included fear of stigma, negative attitudes from health workers, long waiting times, lack of support and lack of transport to the health facility. Undergraduate nursing students’experiences of online learning:gaining access in resource-limited circumstances

Background:In response to the need to mitigate the increase in Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19)cases,nursing students undertake online learning in almost all nursing education institutions in Indonesia.These students face distinctive learning experiences,which have not yet been identified in the Indonesian context.This study aimed to explore students’experiences of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods:We used a descriptive exploratory design.Eleven students from three nursing education institutions in Indonesia were interviewed through telephone calls or video conference applications.Results:One main theme,Gaining access in resource-limited circumstances,was developed to describe students’experience of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.This theme was supported by five subthemes:struggling for internet connection;becoming familiar with the applications;flexibility;supported by others;and dealing with limitations.Conclusions:This current study provides insights into what support should be provided for nursing students to manage limitations in the online learning process.

experiences of Women Receiving Multifraction High Dose-Rate Brachytherapy for Cervical Cancer: A Prospective Qualitative Study

Objective: The aim of this study was to establish cervical cancer patients’ expectations and experiences during high dose-rate (HDR) intracavitary brachytherapy procedure, as part of a process to develop guidelines for quality patient-centered care. Methodology: A prospective, qualitative study with a descriptive phenomenological approach was used. Purposive sampling was carried out to recruit 31 women undergoing HDR brachytherapy for cervical cancer from June to August 2020 at the National Institute of Oncology in Rabat. Semi-structured, one-to-one interviews guided by a theme list were conducted by a female radiation oncologist in Arabic before, during and after treatment. The following aspects were discussed: expectations, experiences in the waiting room, in the treatment room, and suggestions for improvement. Data was transcribed, translated and thematic analysis performed. Results: Most of the patients felt unprepared and did not have a clear understanding of brachytherapy. Brachytherapy was a difficult experience causing fear and anxiety throughout treatment. Most women dreaded the procedure, before receiving the first treatment and even after having had one. Pain was a major problem for the participants. Some women compared this pain to childbirth, a process they preferred to brachytherapy. Patients agreed that the preventative medication received was not efficient to relieve the pain. Despite these negative experiences, patients were left with a positive outlook. Dialogue with the healthcare professionals, support from their family and fellow patients, envisaged outcomes and desires to heal were used to cope, whilst faith and spirituality gave them strength to endure the procedure. Conclusion: Women undergoing uterovaginal brachytherapy for cervical cancer experience pain and emotional distress. Providing patients with adequate information, more sensitive support during the procedure and debriefing afterwards could lessen feelings of fear and anxiety. Perceptions and experiences of Adult Learners of Online Learning in the Era of COVID-19 in Ghana

The COVID-19 Pandemic has undoubtedly affected learners,and as such,adjustments need to be made for successful teaching and learning through online learning.However,in Ghana,the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic did not spare adult learners who are compelled by educational reforms to upgrade themselves academically using online learning platforms.Using a descriptive design,the study explored the perceptions and experiences of 166(online data collection)adult learners as they pursue their academic programs through online learning.An adapted questionnaire on perceptions and online learning experiences developed by Khan,Nabi,Khojah,and Tahir(2021)was used for the data collection.The Confirmatory Factor Analysis technique was used to analyse the data.The study revealed that respondents felt confident while using online learning content but refuted that those technologies permit them to take tests and submit assignments electronically.Furthermore,the study revealed that online learning service was making the learning process very simplified.The revelation means that adult learners possess positive experiences and perceptions about online learning.Therefore,online teaching and learning in higher education institutions should be made a routine activity in Ghana even after the COVID-19 Pandemic because the world is approaching a technological world.

Professor Jiping ZHAO's experiences in the differentiation and treatment of peripheral facial paralysis with acupuncture

Professor Jiping ZHAO has unique thoughts on the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral facial paralysis.She pays the great attention to clinical differentiation in treatment with acupuncture, especially meridian differentiation. She believes that the differentiation of lesion is core and the early judgment is critical for the better therapeutic effects on intractable facial paralysis. The local acupoints are selected in the guide of the theory of meridian sinew and stimulated on the base of three-needling theory. The distal acupoints are decided in light of the syndrome differentiation, of which, Hégǔ(合谷 LI 4), Zúsānlǐ(足三里ST 36) and Taichōng(太冲 LR 3) are the basic acupoints. Additionally, Professor ZHAO lays the emphasis on the 5 th branch of facial nerve(cervical branch) in diagnosis and treatment.

A literature review of research exploring the experiences of overseas nurses in the United Kingdom[2002-2017]

Objectives: The goals of this work were to critically explore the challenges faced by overseas nurses during their working careers in the UK, to critically explore the available support for overseas nurses, and to make recommendations on how to minimize the effects of these challenges, as well as how to provide more support for overseas nurses during their working careers in the UK.Methods: A systematic and comprehensive literature review was conducted to explore the said objectives. A search was conducted in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature(CINAHL), Scopus, and Academic Search Complete databases for relevant research. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to select the included articles. A total of 8 studies including 6 qualitative studies,1 quantitative study, and 1 mixed-method study were selected for literature review. The validity and reliability of these 8 studies were analyzed by using 2 appraisal tools.Results: This review reveals 4 challenges, which overseas nurses experience in the past 15 years, including cultural differences,communication issues, unequal opportunities, and de-skilling. These challenges have a negative impact on overseas nurses' emotions and career development. The formal and informal supports are revealed in this review. Various supports can help overseas nurses to work better.Conclusions: This review reveals 4 challenges faced by overseas nurses, including cultural differences, communication issues,and unequal opportunities and de-skilling. These challenges naturally have a profound negative impact on the emotions and career development of overseas nurses. Additionally, the formal and informal support systems available to these nurses are reviewed. Various support systems can help overseas nurses work more effectively.

Nursing students’ experiences of caring for dying patients and their families: a systematic review and meta-synthesis

Objective: Nurses play important roles in caring for dying patients and their families. Difficulties students confronted when facing dying patients challenge the quality of nursing education. A better understanding of students' experiences would enhance teachers' ability in helping students. This study aims to describe available evidence about nursing students' experiences when caring for dying patients and their families.Methods: A review of qualitative studies published between 2005 and 2017 was undertaken using the following databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL, ProQuest Central, ScienceDirect, and CNKI. The keywords included were nursing students, experience, care, end-of-life, and dying. Qualitative Assessment and Review Instrument was used to assess the quality of the studies by two independent reviewers. The data from the studies were analyzed by meta-synthesis.Results: Eighteen English and two Chinese studies were selected in this review. Four themes were emerged:(1) Students with dying patients: students did not have enough ability in symptoms control, comfort supply, and therapeutic communication for dying patients.(2) Students with the patients' families: students advocated more caring for patients' families.(3) Students with the surroundings: professional medical staffs, especially the nursing preceptors, were key roles in constructing a supporting system for students.(4) Students with themselves: nursing students underwent various negative feelings and adopted both negative and positive strategies to cope with such feelings;students experienced professional and personal development during the caring for dying patients.Conclusions: Nursing students' abilities in terminal symptom control, comfort supply, and therapeutic communication should be improved by more theoretic learning and simulation practice. The nursing preceptors were key roles in constructing a supporting system for students and helping them to control the negative emotions when facing dying patients.

experiences of Low Gestational Weight Gain: A Phenomenological Study with Pregnant Women

Low maternal, gestational weight gain is associated with preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, low birthweight, small-for-gestational-age infants, neural tube defects, infant death, failure to initiate breastfeeding, and childhood asthma. The advantage of qualitative research is it can provide valuable insights for health care professionals into the experience and perceptions of low gestational weight gain from the vantage point of women with first-hand lived experience. In this Heideggarian interpretive phenomenological study, the meaning and experiences of weight gain for pregnant women with low gestational weight gain were explored. Data were collected through interviews with 10 pregnant women from Atlantic Canada. Conroy’s pathway for interpretive phenomenology was utilized. A hermeneutical spiral of interpretation identified six patterns or major themes: confronting one’s mortality;defending oneself against a permanent metamorphosis into a stranger;playing with fire and brimstone;slipping under the radar;trying to find peace;and riding an emotional roller coaster. The findings point to a war that is being waged over pregnant bodies with respect to weight that leaves pregnant women fending for themselves, apparently with little help from their health care providers. Implications of the findings for health practice, education, and research are discussed.

Background and aim: People suffering from mental illness and their experiences of attitudes towards them are rarely investigated from the perspective of the individual. The aim was to gain an understanding of how a group of mental health patients experienced social relationships in personal settings as well as in society. Method: Open interviews with twenty-five mental health patients were conducted and analysed with a qualitative content analysis. Result: The essence of the result was that mental health patients’ experiences are still not taken enough into account, neither by mental health professionals nor by their social networks. This was underpinned by four core categories: Patients’ experience of deteriorated and reduced social contacts due to various degrees of acceptance and knowledge of people in general;service users reported on difficulties with social contacts in general, with family relationships, relationships with friends and workmates and with employers;reduced life opportunities were expressed, including violated self-image and poor coping competence and, ambivalent experiences of contact with the mental health services were reported. Conclusion and clinical implication: The present study contributes to the understanding of mental health patients’ experiences of professional services and of their social networks. This knowledge may strengthen the implications of patient-centred care essential for the outcome of the care.
